In short : to the left will have more asymmetrical clipping (top part of waveform being cut off more than the bottom), to the right will have more symmetrical clipping (both top and bottom part of waveform being clipped equally). However this control also can impact the gain of the tube a bit which is probably why Ainsley hears the sound being distorted more with the control to the right.

Basically the pedal has a 6AS6 tube in it, running at 230V plate voltage but derived from a standard 9V power supply with a boost converter. The tube can be switched from triode to pentode operation and has a pretty neat sound ! Basstheworld did a cool short demo with it :
