I bought this through the belief that every bass player should at least try to master a fretless bass. Well, I've tried. And failed. So now it's time to move it on to someone else who wants to have a go.

It's an active model with a bubinga body (so, yes, it's heavy like all other bubinga ones are). It's in immaculate condition and comes with the gig bag (also as new) and all the various bits and bobs including the manual and identity card.

Can be collected from Norwich, or I may be able to deliver/meet on my work travels. Or I'm happy to post at the buyer's expense.

Looks and sounds fabulous, but I've tried and I can't play it well enough to keep it.

Free of all blemishes (although you have to polish it every time you pick it up).





Set up with a low action so it can be played finger style, it also comes with a few slides and finger picks and a hard case.

Price: £350 collected from Norwich. I may be able to deliver/meet as I travel for work a fair bit. I'm also happy to courier at the buyer's expense.

I've decided I'll never get my head around six strings, so I may as well part with the guitars I've accumulated.

You know how you swear you'll never sell your first bass? Well, the time has come to part with mine.

It's a Washburn XB400. It has two active humbuckers and a fast, slim Jazz-style neck. It's in perfect original condition because as soon as got close to gigging I retired it and bout my first Fender.

I bought it back in 1999, but can't remember exactly how much I paid, nor do I know what they're worth now. I've put it up for £250, which could be low for one of this age in this condition, but I'd rather see someone else put it to good use.

Can be collected from Norwich or I may be able to meet somewhere on my work travels. I'm also happy to courier it at the buyer's expense.



I'll take some better photos if anyone's interested in it. The finish is translucent and the grain shows through, but it doesn't really come out in these pictures.

I bought this on a whim last year. It has a great thumping sound, but I don't really have much use for it.

It's in original condition, has an onboard tuner etc.

It's everything you would expect from a Fender made in Japan. It has a low action, lovely rolled-edge fingerboard and all the sonic options you could wish for, once you get the hang of the switches and rollers.

I just don't play it enough to warrant keeping it. I use the Jazz Deluxe in the surf band and haven't had any complaints.

The only issues are a couple of tiny knocks to the headstock:



...and a small dent on the back of the neck:



I'm happy to pack it for a courier or I will be travelling a lot for work over the next couple of months so may well be able to arrange a hand over.

Trade-wise, I'd be interested in (in this order):
USA Precision Hotrod (P/J pickups, jazz-width neck)
Precision Deluxe (ditto, although I think the USA-made ones have wider necks)
USA Precision

Apologies to those of you who showed an interest in this, my first "proper" bass.

I played it at band practice a couple of days ago and realised I don't want to let it go. Get over the thicker-than-normal neck (with its lovely 41mm nut) and those Custom Shop are pure Precision power.

I bought this new back in 2004. I'm selling it because I need some funds, I don't particularly like five-string basses and have no real call for anything other than full electric basses.

I don't know what more there is to say, really. I'll take some more photos showing some of the details, but it's never been gigged (or played that much, to be honest). I did lend it to a friend who managed to break one of the tuners, so one tuner is odd, but it's a more expensive Grover one.

Maybe not in Wales, but there is at least one in England. Well, my local Cash Converters in Norwich always has half-a-dozen brand new Warwicks in stock. I'm not sure if they're a pukka official dealer (whatever that means), but they carry a good selection.

But I think we're spoiled in Norwich for some reason. Within a hundred yards of that shop there are three other guitar shops and there is a PMT 15 minutes walk away and an independent (run by a bassist) ten minutes walk away in the other direction.

My settings should mean that any thread I post in is automatically added to my "follow" list, but it's not happening.

I've also clicked the "follow topic" button for the gigs thread and selected "immediate notification", but that doesn't work. As soon as I return to the thread the "follow topic" button reverts to the same setting (i.e. NOT "unfollow topic").

Today I posted in [url="http://basschat.co.uk/topic/7919-how-was-your-gig-last-night/page__st__3380"]this thread[/url] and it's still not been included on my "follow" list. In fact, there are only seven members listed as following it, yet there are 170 pages of posts, so something is clearly still not working.

Played to almost completely empty house last night at one of the main music pubs in Norwich. Very helpful soundman (Clive) couldn't believe how quickly we sound checked and how little faffing there was.

Our new drummer popped his gigging cherry and performed very well considering some of the stuff we play (such as Foo Fighters).

Lovely to play on a proper stage with in-house lighting, monitors and a soundman who knows the equipment and the venue.

If we hadn't brought our friends along, though, we would have outnumbered the punters, but we got paid so it's not all bad. I even took advantage of my wireless kit to leave the stage and dance with my wife during the inevitable Sex on Fire (and got a big fat snog for my troubles!).

I had the same warning yesterday, but nothing this morning (I'm on a Mac running Safari).

We all own it equally. Gig money has almost paid the finance off (it was underwritten by the two guitarists). if anyone leaves, the deal is that they get 80 per cent of their contribution back in cash and the PA stays with the band. The only risk of this is the last remaining member of the band ends up with the PA.

Everything apart from the desk lives in my cellar, so I get the pleasure of transporting it everywhere. On the other hand, if there's an acrimonious falling-out, possession is nine-tens of the law, isn't it?

My thoughts exactly. I don't think I know anyone who listens to music that's in "the charts". Come to think of it, just how many charts are there now?

There are so many genres and sub-genres, it probably doesn't matter if the one that's aimed mainly at pre-teenage girls (apparently) happens to overlook one instrument.

Rehearsal last night without Vox. Rhythm sang some of the songs and I thought I'd have a go on backing vocals. To my surprise, Rhythm looked over at Lead (who can sing) and then looked surprised when he realised it was my voice he was hearing.

Maybe I'll have a go at backing vocals next time we have a full line up.

I finished putting together my bitsa Precision at the weekend (Mighty Mite Jazz neck, one of the nicest I've played, no-name white pearlescent body, white pickguard, white EMG pickups, chrome hardware), but can't decide whether to take it to rehearsals tonight. I probably won't, as it's intended for my surf band, so it'll wait until a couple of weeks' time. Probably.

My latest creation, assembled by me from bits and pieces. I'll get around to taking better photos when the light's better.

Also, what height is the action at the 12th fret? The photo makes it look pretty high.

The Cash Converters in Norwich always has half-a-dozen in. Maybe give them a call. They have a shop dedicated just to musical instruments etc and are the local Warwick dealer - it's not just a section at the back of the usual shop.

Isn't Victor Wooten on record as saying he doesn't believe in musical education and that players should make up their own way of learning? He seems to support the "do it your own way" camp.

Mind you, I think he's just a frustrated guitarist. I can't say I've listen to a lot of his stuff, but "serving the song" seems an alien concept to him!

I did that too!

Two years later, we're back together again. She doesn't care that my collection at least doubled now that I've actually discovered she's way more important that collecting even more basses.

Hell, I'm even thinking about slimming the collection down, as I play my Corvette $$ almost exclusively now.
