I think I saw that on a documentary. Guys like Kenny Aronoff thrilled about playing on a hit then then getting a call from an agent telling them to go home. 

yes, Billy Joel.  "Hired Gun" was the documentary.

if you really have to do this, then don't straighten them out when you take them off the bass - ie leave them in the coiled/bent shape the came off in.  they won't stand up to being taken off & put on again indefinitely, but you should get a few more cycles out of them.

but think of all the money you'd save on strings by getting another bass.  😁
