Would you prefer a stable of cheap yet playable basses or one single "nice" bass?

I have one modestly priced bass that suits everything I do. I wouldn't want anything more expensive in case it got damaged/lost/stolen being gigged. But I wouldn't want a nice one just to keep at home as I'm not the best player and like to practice on the same bass I perform with.

Sometimes hanging around here I wonder if I'm not a proper bass player!  :)

I’ve got some songs in mind but, what songs would you play?

Some of my favourites are 10,000 Reasons, Waiting Here for You, and the Lord's Prayer set to Paul Simon's Sound of Silence.

  3. I did a whole week of tribute bands a few years back - Letz Zep, Think Floud, The ZZ Tops, Livewire, etc. at "Rhodes Rock". Personally I was just into the music, and loved how close to the original sound some of the bands got. How they looked wasn't important to me, though some were very good - e.g. Livewire had a Bon Scott for the first set, and a Brian Johnson for the second, which was kinda cool. The ZZ Tops beards looked real, which is a commitment over and beyond!

People are quick to moan, but I also like to be quick to praise where it is due.

Likewise, with bad weather forecasts for tomorrow's gig I ordered a battery-powered busking amp from Anderton's to arrive yesterday. The courier unhelpfully confused Cardiff and Coventry parcel hubs. I contacted Anderton's who chased it for me and it was delivered at 8.30am today - no day spent wondering if it will arrive or not and in plenty of time for the gig - excellent service!

Of course, the latest forecast is for sun all day, so we could have used a mains amp anyway!

Value is a slippery thing. There are a lot of giggable bases under £300, especially with some minimal tweaks and upgrades. I find value in my boutique bass when it encourages me to play it. So does a less expensive instrument, just not in the same way. The Pedulla is no case queen, but inspires me to play better.

This is a me - a Squier sunburst jazz. It cost about £250 new five years ago, and has had new tuners, a fretless neck swap and a pro setup. It sounds good and I don't feel a need for a better instrument.

I used to use leads made up from two-core 13A mains lead (repurposed from a lawnmower). They are all still working 30+ years on!

That's exactly what I use for our PA. Bright orange cables that make it less likely we'll trip over.

As above re the A/B switch, perhaps to a Behringer P1 which you could wear (battery powered) or install on the board (9v). The P1 has a second input should you need it. Inputs are via XLRs so you'd need an adapter. I have one and used it for IEM before moving to wireless. I now use it mainly for silent practice.

Or the P2, which has one of those fancy all-in-one XLR and jack sockets.

The behringer P2 and its rivals are designed to take line level outputs from a mixer, so your bass may not have a strong enough signal to give you enough volume, especially if it is passive.

I use a Behringer P2. I run my bass into a Boss TU-3 tuner pedal - the 'output' jack goes to my amp, the 'bypass' jack goes into the P2. I'm not sure what's going on inside but there's a strong enough signal to drive everything. I use it with ACS ambient IEMs which are something like ambient less 17dB.

  9. Sound advice!

We have a service tonight for the licensing of our new priest. I'm sad to see the old one leave, but change might be good. My back's playing up (again) so bass guitar instead of upright for me (again).

  10. We used "Americana" as it seemed less niche, more accessible, trendier than Bluegrass, Country, etc. Planet Rock say "Americana" when they play Country songs. Rather than an attempt to subdivide it I guess we were using it as a catch all for a range of American music.

Does seem to be growing, which is another great reason to explore!

Although quite simple - root-5 with a run here and there, but I found the bass lines a lot of fun to play. No drummer in our band, so the bass and banjo were the rhythm section.

I played on upright too, which always adds a bit of theatre.
