I like a Shure Beta 57 over a 58. Used that in a covers band for many years. I'm sure that I read somewhere that it has a slightly warmer tone than a 58 and is considered quite flattering for female vocals (tending to warm them up a bit). That said I can't recall where I read that and it could have been something my fevered mind made up! :-)

Yep. We've tried both a Shure 57 and a 58 and the 57 is definitely better for our female vocalist.

That headstock looks a bit sharp, you'll need to put a cork on the end to stop you stabbing the drummer....

Why would you not want to stab the drummer?

  3. I haven't seen this before, the 'Donner Wah Maker Guitar Bass Effects Pedals Digital Auto Wah Filter 3 Modes True Bypass' (snappy name!) so I was wondering if anyone had any experience of it, or know what it's a clone of. You know me well sir!

I have trouble putting ikea furniture together and will most likely solder myself to any board I go near if left unattended. However, my bro is an electrical engineer and can solder in his sleep so my plan is to bribe him with rum so he teaches me what to do :D
:D :D Good plan! A soldering iron in novice hands can cause all sorts of problems..... most of which mean not being able to play for a few days, let alone trashing the device! (or setting the house on fire!!!)

  5. This might be better in the 'random thoughts' thread.

I've been playing guitar and bass now for 40 years.... doing all the 'twiddly-twiddly' stuff with my left hand, but when I'm not playing I can hardly stir the soup or paint a big flat wall with my left hand. How can I, on the one hand, be so dextrous with my left hand, yet, on the same hand, be so useless with it?

I've never found an explanation for this.

I'm a bit of a phaser junky, built a few now. I'd recommend the Maestro Stage Phaser It can get really deep & resonant, with no low end loss. Madbean does a nice pcb of it: 'Stage Fright'

Looks good - but it might be a bit too much for a novice builder. (I'm making a huge presumption here - so please forgive me if I'm wrong, Jonesy.)

  7. FuzzDog's stuff is good.

    Here's the P45, and here's the P90.

That is excellent. How did it go with the knuckle test? What heads are you mating with it?
The knuckle test was very painful and produced a dead 'thunk'. No ringing of any sort. I've got it with a TC BG250 and (so far) it sounds tight and loud. We've got a load of rehearsals at the end of the month so I'll find out more then. We're a quietish band (no guitarist and a very touch-sensitive drummer) so it won't get the full work-out that some members may like to give it.

  9. Thanks guys. I used PU expanding glue and matte black enamel spray paint. I tried to do it on the cheap so I won't be buying a grill (unless you know a place that will do them for a reasonable price?) and I made my own templates for the handle and backplate. All-in-all, very satisfying.

  10. Here's my recently (i.e. today) completed 1x12".

External Dimensions: Width 15", Depth 14", Height 19"

Internal Dimensions: Width 35.8cm, Depth 30.5cm, Height 43.9 cm.

Made from 12mm marine ply from B&Q

Internal Volume, after taking off baton, driver and port volume: 46.5 litres

Tuned to 50Hz (using Win ISD) with 2x 6.6cm diamete by 13.1cm long round ports.

    Weight 10.6 kg.

Sound - sounds good to me!

  11. Are the Harley Benton pedals exact clones of the Boss ones.... e.g the BOD-1 or the BLM-1 ?
