The trouble is to get a good sound on bass through a mic you've got to have A ) a good sized room with good acoustics B ) a decent mic (which can cost upwards of £200) C ) a quality audio interface which will convert mic level lines. (again, upwards of £200) With something like the line six toneport you could just plug straight in and have some virtual amps at your fingertips. If however, you really do want a nice mic and some nice interfaces, I think there are people on here who know a LOT more than me about it that might want to chime in!
Maybe that set up is a bit much for what I need it for. I basically just want something that will allow me to lay bass lines on the guitar tracks for writing purposes so that I may send this back to the guitarist and the drummer will do his bit I guess.
For a simple but very capable system I recomend purchasing a simple USB DI, or even something as simple as this USB/Jack lead to your PC and then downloading reaper. You dont really need a mic unless you're desperate to get "your sound" down. You could shoot for a Line 6 toneport if your after some nice tones too. These two should last you much longer and give you less lag than with audacity, which i found good for editing but not so great for recording.
Thanks for that, the USB/jack lead option seems a lot cheaper but would this compromise the sound in any way compare to the mic? I will try this reaper thing to and keep you posted. Thanks a lot
  3. Hi, I'm a bit of a novice and was wondering if anyone knew the best way to record bass lines on my pc. I have recently joined a band and the guitarist has sent me his bit for me to work a bass line over that, I have downloaded Audacity although I do not know yet how to use it. I guess I will need a mic but will I need anything else? Any advice would be most welcomed or any links to sites you have found easy to understand. Cheers

I had been messing with bass for years and always thought of myself as a bass player, even though I had never played in a band and could only play tunes that I had tab for and even at that i was limited to very easy tunes. 1hour a day is nothing dude, try all day and night as I couldnt put my bass down when i finally got into it, 18months ago. Im now in an amazing band and giging at least once a month. once you get a few scales down and get comfortable playing over some keys, then get yourself down to a local jam session to get some confidence playing in front of people. Get a band together asap and get rocking brother
Thanks for the advice, as it happens I have been offered to play with 2 others, the thought of playing live is not one I relish however as I do not like being on stage from previous experience (non musical performance). I accepted to join the band as I know this is the only way to progress. One hour a day isn't much for you out there but it is a huge improvement on my previous routine, must try to increase this. I really appreciate your advice even if it is given drunk

    Hello

Hi, been 'practicing' for 15 years but made little progress due to my laziness. But no more! I am now putting minimum an hour a day (have been for the last 5 months) so hopefully should be reaping some reward soon. I still have my old Tanglewood I bought new then, this model doesn't seem to exist anymore (the whole thing is painted gloss apart from the fret board). I am looking to get another bass as I want different tuning (currently drop D) but want Drop C or B tuning on a 4 string still. I have no idea what to get so I thought I would check what the experts amongst you have to say. Off to read the stuff already posted, see you around the forum
