1.
Fair point well made. He's butchered that Tele.

Yet another reason to dislike Coldplay.
Erm... if I´m not mistaken that´s Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead. Nothing wrong with Radiohead AT ALL. ;)

Ok, time to come out of the closet as well - I started playing guitar last summer at the ripe age of 41. GAS being what it is, I currently have (in order of appearance) a Simon & Patrick Songsmith Folk, a Ibanez Artcore (E-335 clone, forgot the model) and a - yes! - Fender HW1 Telecaster I got for a great price on eBay. Crackers, all of them.

I´m also guilty of playing more guitar than bass these days...

  2. I haven´t tried either but would like to point out that the DigiTech X-Series pedals are extremely power-hungry. They go through a 9V battery in three or four hours. You´ll need a 300mA power supply for these, whereas the Boss CEB-3 only draws 18mA. Just sayin´, might make your decision easier...

  3.
Thought it was April 1st for a moment there...unbelievable ! and I'm not referring to Mr Frustrated Guitarist's playing , if you can call it that.....but hey each to his own.
Completely agree with you. Man, that was... pathetic. Really. My first thought was that was one of those overdubbed fake "shred" videos but apparently it was real.

I can see why some people can´t get into Jaco but I have no idea why anyone would dig Cliff Burton.

  4.
i'll try to find a clip of a dvd i have where he's playing with a trombone player and a drummer. It's unwatchable! Jazz at it's most embarrassing!
Didn´t know there was a DVD of the event but the album is "Trilogue" with Albert Mangelsdorff and Alphonse Mouzon, live at the Berlin Jazz Fest in 1976.

IMO one of the finest recordings Jaco ever did. :)

    Ah - found some vids:

Never been a fan of Slang either TBH...

  5.
The Nano Clone on the other hand was just crap IMO, for lack of a better term. It didn't seem as versatile, wouldn't do subtle at all, lost low end and had bit of a volume drop. Simply pants.
Oh yes. And it´s rather noisy as well.
The Nano Stone, which IMO sounds exactly the same as it's big brother, but without the annoying volume drop. Perfect :)
Indeed. I love that little box.

  6. I had the RC-2 (for a couple of hours) and hated it.

The drum sounds are appalling, the quantizing function is not a feature but a bug IMHO, and the footswitch reacted rather randomly. I took it back to the shop the next day.

I recently got the Akai Headrush which is a rather basic looper but miles better than the RC-2 IMHO. Works like a charm - does exactly what you tell it to, doubles as a nifty delay/tape echo and is a lot cheaper than the Boss. (Yes, it´s a good deal bigger and heavier, but that´s a non-issue for me.) Highly recommended.

  7. I´m surprised no one has posted this yet:

    http://www.theblockheads.com/audio.php?a=n...ys+%27Hit+Me%27

    The man himself, soloed.

And if I recall the story correctly NMW did say that he had listened to lots of Jaco the day before the Rhythm Stick session...

  8.
the biggest issue I have is that is has that 23mm lip around the edge
Of course, you could use a piece of wood as a riser. I did that because my Rockbag case has the same issue - cut some spare wood I had lying around (20 mm thick) to the right size for my Sansamp DI, velcroed it and voílà. Tidy, cheap and removable.

  9.
Its soul. Its groove. Its the point where man and machine are operating in perfect harmony. Its why Michael Brecker and Bob Berg aren't Stan Getz and Paul Desmond.
I tried hard, but I can´t let you get away with this one. :)

Michael Brecker had everything you mentioned - soul, groove and complete mastery of the instrument. To me. he was one of the most in-the-pocket players ever. Just because he was playing some really advanced stuff harmonically and technically doesn´t mean he was just a w***er. He alsways had something to say musically. I´ve seen him live a couple of times and have yet to hear someone who can build a solo better than he did...

    Here endeth the rant.

  10.
Its not deep, folks, just a great groove and high energy playing.

Even jazz musicians can have fun.
+ 1. :)

Besides, rayfw: half of the horns were playing with the Mingus Big Band one time or the other...
I also noted Lou Marini of SNL and Blues Brothers fame playing sax in the front row, and was that Kevin ??? the original trumpeter from Incognito on the back row?

    Do I win any points??
Trumpet line-up, left to right: Ron Tooley, Jon Faddis, Michael Philipp Mossman, Virgil Jones.

  11.
'Juicebox' by The Strokes.
That was a Sterling IIRC. :)

Our friend MarloweDK nails the Stingray sound IMO:

  12. If you think that was awful (I wasn´t thrilled either), check out this guy:

    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=Z32ddiyd46Q

:) At least he´s not playing a Fodera...
This kind of world fusion is much more up my street; metal and traditional Japaneese instrumentation together at last.

    http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=RERXiliJfdI
That was rather cool indeed.

  13. The Artcore is a fine bass but not the best choice if you are after a "metallic" kind of slap sound.
It can do warm, thumpy, old-school funky, fat-bottomed bass but Marcus Miller style is probably not its forte.

That said, you could always try putting on a set of nice, fresh, light-gauge stainless steel strings and see if it helps.

I still think you´d be better off with, say, a Squier Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified Jazz.

Heavens, that resume is unreal! :)

Never heard of the guy, but he sure seems to have his stuff together. Very impressive.

  15.
I think it stands for Egomaniac's Re-imagined Bass. I think.
Entirely Redundant Bass?

I too can´t help thinking that the stuff in the vids would sound so much better on a piano or a *gasp!* guitar.
Then again, the compositions are not too brilliant either... JM2C.

Oh, I totally love the privet/banjo quote. :)

  16. I agree, great line. There was a transcription in a Bass Player mag some time ago.
according to Wikipedia, he's playing with Neil Diamond
IIRC, it´s the other Neil - Sedaka, not Diamond. :)

  17.
I normally despise this sort of stuff, but this guy has real, raw talent IMO.

Check this original composition out, it's quite beautiful
That was actually pretty brilliant as far as I´m concerned. Very, very nice stuff.

And that axe is ugly, but it sounds wonderful. Judging from the harmonics, he´s using some kind of alternate tuning.
