  1. Here's what John Rigg says about the bias...

    Hi Justin,

A quick web search for the AD140 Bass schematic reminded me why I
don't have it. I could only find the AD140 lead amp schematics online,
which are different. I'd have to contact Orange, but as it was a
fairly simple circuit I didn't bother at the time.

I can't remember if the bias was adjustable on this particular amp,
but most of the Orange amps I've worked on did have adjustable bias. I
would definitely have checked it and adjusted it if necessary, either
by adjusting a pot or altering resistor values if there wasn't a pot.

A general point: someone who doesn't know much about valve amplifiers
shouldn't be fiddling around inside one due to the potentially lethal
voltages, which are quite a bit more dangerous than mains voltage.
Also the consequences of getting the bias wrong could be expensive
(burned out valves and/or output transformer).

    Regards,
    John

  2. An interesting question to which I'm afraid I have no idea of the answer. The amp had 4 new 6L's valves in May 2018.  This work was carried out by John Rigg in Whitstable and these new valves replaced the original valves after 2 decades of fault free service.  I called John and he said he'll look up the wiring diagram and let me know about the trim pot, otherwise if the bias needs adjusting he would have done it by changing some resistors and this was quite a routine thing to do for this kind of amp.

I'll let you know more when I hear back.

The speaker outs are 2 x 4 ohm and 1 x 8 ohm.  I'm not sure you could run 1 x 2 ohm cab, but quite a few options of 4 and 8 ohm cabs.

  3. ... to continue from the above feedback.  The collection of the amp I was sending to Tonci was delayed by 4 days (DPD booked through Interparcel).  The courier finally came to collect the amp just and hour or so before the amp Tonci sent me from Croatia arrived...  Somewhat embarrassing for me, but Tonci has been very patient, and for that I owe him a great dept of gratitude.  Many thanks Tonci, and the amp you sent was exactly as described - BRAND NEW.  I'm so sorry you have been kept waiting.

    Warmest regards

    Justin

  4. Yesterday I met with Udo who bought an amp.  I wished I could’ve hung around longer, couldn’t meet a nicer basschatter. Deal with confidence and my highest recommendation.

    Many thanks fella.

    Justin

  5. Please move if this should be in effects, but it is also an amp too - clever Phil Jones.

Fabulous piece of kit.   <-- please click to Phill Jones Bass Buddy webpage.

Versatile little preamp / DI, with built in 15 watt amp - ideal for home practise, recording and many other applications.  It even runs off batteries!!

Comes with an unused satchel and all accessories.  Like new condition.

I'm on the look out for an Ampeg PF800 if you have one and fancy a trade?

Price includes UK postage although local pick from Ashford in Kent always welcome.

  6. Love the tone of this little head.

I bought this 2nd hand on Saturday as I wanted the portaflex 15 inch cab it came with and the owner  rightly wouldn't split. I used it for home practise and gigged it last night with 2 Super Midgets.  The little fella did so good, I'm now selling my usual Tone Hammer (and some valve monsters) to fund a PF800. (Happy to add cash if you have an 800 and want to trade down).

Price includes UK postage.  Collection welcome from Ashford in Kent.

  7. Rare Orange AD140B Bass Amp which I've owned from new - #008 of 17.

A couple of small tears in the tolex but good condition for age.
I've owned this for a couple of decades and I love it! but I now have to use more portable gear so sadly this lovely amp has to go.  Collection only as it's heavy and I'd worry about the valves.

Located in Ashford, Kent.  Any trial welcome.
Please check out the planetofamps  link for great in-depth info about these amps:-

Here is a 'favourable’ links on Reverb.com although it seems a tad optimistic:-

  8. As part of a clear out / gear change, here is my Aguilar Tone Hammer 500.

Very good condition, fabulous old school tones in a loud portable package.  Brilliant little amps.

Will trade for a Ampeg PF800 + cash if you have one and fancy a change.  Price includes UK postage - will ship abroad.

Collection always very welcome form Ashford in Kent.

  9. More pictures and info to follow:

Ampeg SVT ii (non pro) all valve monster and 8 x 10 cab.

Big clear out and it's time to move this beauty on.  I've owned it for over twenty years and am the 2nd owner.  I haven't had the opportunities of recent to use this amazing setup and am resigning myself to stick with more portable gear.   There are some signs of use and a few tears in the tolex on the cab, although the amp his in excellent condition.

My all time favourite rig 😞

Collection only from Ashford in Kent.

No i  do not think that is ok as i stated in my original post. I am not happy that the seller has ommitted details especialy about the damage.

Now that you have revealed the seller has a history of deceiving buyers I think ebay should be made aware and provide them with as much detail as possible to help build a case against the seller.

However, I otherwise am happy for anyone to buy whatever they like and try and make money.

Super sorry dude, it was a figurative "you" I was addressing, definitely not you my friend.  Many apologies

  11. Not the first time this has happened with this particular seller.  I'm in the market for a fretless and was watching this Fender American Fretless Jazz bass built from parts which also had damage mentioned in the listing (and is honestly shown in the original sellers pictures)

The bass was bought then re-advertised with copied pictures and the description amended to omit the details about the damage and that it's a bitsa. The pictures of the damage have also been omitted. If you think it's ok for someone to profit from this type of deceit, whilst promoting themselves "As a premiere authority on vintage, new, and used music equipment"  that's for you. Not every buyer would realise that the bass should be strung through the body for it to be original??? (is that right?)

There probably isn’t much I can do but it does irk me

Yes, it's pretty poor behaviour at best.

    Stay safe folks.

  12. Thanks Paul, I'm happy to take on board your points, and without the chord being placed in a musical context, more than one option is / could be suitable.  With this in mind I realise the purpose of a quick reference table is a little flawed without listing all possible scale choices, but as its just for me, I'm happy to just list the chord tones and take on board that I have to look at the musical context when the chord is being used in order to make choices about the notes I'm going to play..  (I suppose in practise this doesn't really happen as my ear is largely dictating what I play next, but something to think about nevertheless). :)

It would be better to evaluate the chord progression over a number of bars rather than just that one chord in isolation - do you have the other chords? It may well be that the C7b5 is a passing chord which uses notes outside of the underlying scale, and that the scale is much less 'exotic'.

Hi Paul, thanks for your additional explanation, unfortunately in this instance the question arose about C7(b5) when looking at the chord in isolation - for a quick reference chart. See post above https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/319913-chords-and-the-scales-they-relate-to-c7b5/?do=findComment&comment=3464919

and yes, happy to take it with a pinch of salt.
