1.
Fair enough, i suppose being overseas as well must brought into consideration. I think i'm just jealous because i badly want a Matamp!
If i were you i would probarbly find an excuse to go down there and try them out.(While checking out a soccergame or something :) )

  2.
The Mywatt 400 is, as far as i understand, simply a Hiwatt 400 clone. I also understand that Matamp make Hiwatt's custom line now. It is also commonly thought that Hiwatt's have a fair bit of clean headroom, at the consequential, sacrafice of warmth of character, or drive - the main reason i'd get a valve amp! its your call, but i can't imagine there wouldn't have been anything Matamp couldn't have tweaked to voice the amp in the way you so desire.
I think you've got a point there about the headroom compromise.
Maybe Matamp could have tweaked it to my liking but i just thought it would be easier to get a sound closer to what i want out of the box,so to speak.

  3.
The v series are supposed to be good for grindy sounds, the reason I suggested a Quadra or Hexa is because they have a more 'modern' front end in the form of a GP12 pre amp so should be easier to get this elusive sound you're looking for. Mind you, I'd have a V8 even if it just sat unused in my living room :) .
I've heard that they are rare amps.I seem to remember when they were new, after just a little while on the market at the time, they were the concsidered very exclusive.
I've talked to Max at Mywatt and read some reviews. It seems like the 400 isn't so warm-sounding.

  4. Jeff told me on the phone they have a new version of the GT200 amp.So now there is two. It's aimed to be a bit more bassy and perhaps not as agressive.
It would be really cool if anyone could try it and report back.
I would recommend to ask by the phone about the cabinets,i'm sure you will get a real quick answer.I've never asked about the cabs but i get the impression they have all sorts of stuff for customers to try.

  5.
And it was based on the same things that i bought it from you instead of having "my own" amp shipped.

I´m probably even more happy than you are, awesome amp!
I'm glad you are.I'm still not sure what to get instead.
    Have fun!

  6.
Aah, so it was like that??? :)
Yes it was.Hi there!
    Sorry.
To be frank,i could have bothered to just ship it over to them and let them tweak it.But,maybe they would missunderstand some info or something. Then it's the shipping, twice.Getting mangled by UPS.Or me getting over there with the amp but that's way too expensive.

  7.
:) sounds to me like valve amps aren't your thing!
Oh yes it is.
That sound,or feeling when the sound comes from infront of the speakers and not from somewhere inside the cabinet, and it's transparent big, round and punchy at the same time. Can't be replaced by anything else. But apparently there is very different sound in different makes.

  8.
You couldn't get that sound from the GT200? I found it really versatile! And the distortion doesn't descend into fizzy mush either. It breaks up just right when you get your head round the controls. Maybe valve amps aren't you really?
The Matamp was quite close actually. It's just that i found it to be too middly, harsh in the midrange and the bass was too high up in the frequencies. With 2 ECC81's and 1 ECC83,the general output and break up was quite good.
I could go over to Matamp and order one and tweak it perhaps to what i want but that is too much trouble i'm affraid.I live in Sweden.

  9.
have you tried flats? also the svt sound you said your after is really mid heavy.
No it's not.
It's insanely bottom heavy compared to anything i have tried.Perhaps you can dial in a sound with plenty of midrange, but compared to the competition Mesa/Boogie,Matamp and so on it's able to deliver TONS more lowend and low end punch.
Flats don't change the sound that much as i'm talking about.
I guess there is only one amp left for my taste and that is SVT PRO II.As the Reeves amp is too expensive and hard to get a even soundsample.

  10.
Why not get like an old Sound City 200 and get a local (decent) tech to turn it into exactly what you want since all/most of the parts are there for that Hiwatt amp.

Also I believe it's quite hard to get the Hiwatt style amps to distort and they just have headroom for days, but this is only what guitarists tell me.

    Or buy my 400+

    Cheers
Sound city you say?
I've never heard of those. Also if it's going to be a 200w it's got to be delivering 200w+
like the reeves amp seems to according to the review.(250w or something)

The thing is with Mesa/Boogie,i'm allergic to them.I have tried Buster bass200 and Bass 400.I don't like harsh mid sound with the articulate klank from the string hitting the frets,or the bottom end being too compressed only reaching down to 80Hz or something.
I like warm sound, like the sound you easiely get from an SVT,or an Orange with the mid cut a little and the bass knob full on.

I even sold my Matamp gt200 because of the middly sound.I know i could have made them tweak with it but i didn't want to go through the trouble of sending and returning it with instructions or comming over to their shop.
Mainly because i had a buyer offering very good money for it.

  11. I'm continuing my search for the ultimate all tube bass head and got curious about these.
They are both sold by the factory i think (like Matamp)and i can't find a place to try them out.
Reeves i know is only sold from the factory in USA,Mywatt i'm not so sure.

My ideal sound is ampeg svt punch, warmth crossed with some unique sound like Orange, and not too much distortion,i like it when it's breaking up a little from the output tubes but not the Bzzz, farting with lost bottom end like some amps have.If you know what i mean.

  12.
Thats a shame I have about 20 Mullard ECC82's, I thought you were after the ECC83's ( which are hard to find at decent prices) when you said Mullard pre amp tubes...
No kidding?
Do you have one that has ridiculously fat sound, very low and warm midrange and not so bright top end?

  13.
Hotrox

    how about them mate,

i buy all my tubes from there
I ordered a JJ ECC82 Gold from hotrox a few minutes ago, thanks for the help everyone.

  14.
Mine are JJ's and give me a wonderful tone... did you try those settings?
If you mean full bass,no treble or precense, yes.Still not enough in my opinion, that's why i called a technician at Matamp
who recommended changing the middle tube to a JJ ECC 82/12AU7.I'll try that and see what happens.

  15.
Hotrox

    how about them mate,

    Looks good,worth a try
    thanks.

  16.
You lie I want to see the itemised phone bill :)
Perhaps he was bothered by my slow talking and thick Swedish accent
Nah,i don't know.I actually want to slow him down as little as possible and maybe get the amp a bit quicker.Damn,i can't get it out of my head, what's it going to sound like, what's it going to sound like, over and over again.Still waiting for the magic email:your amp is shipped.

  17.
Bah it's only on my recommendation he's gone for the Matamp :)

FYI Matamp build all the custom shop stuff for Hiwatt
That's actually more or less true it's on your recommendation. Thanks a bunch!
I was hopefully going to thank you later when i get the amp,and hear it,but i'm really gratefull for your recommendation.

I'm not surprised they build for Hiwatt too.

  18.
My GT200 is putting out 200W clean and well into the 300s running dirty... rest assured unless you play for a noisy EMO band  200W clean is enough to send the front ten rows of the audience home with tinitus

    * They measure it on a oh-silly-scope at Matamp and admit it's not a perfect measurement but it's close enough

PS where are you from? Not the UK I guess
Good to hear about the tinitus-effect :)
I'm from the Gothenburg-area (Lerum)in southwestern part of Sweden.

  19.
The Orange is a very dirty amp...suits passive style basses really well. Works well with my Stingrays as well, but the P bass is where it shines. A total powerhouse. Ive played 600W solid state amps before a few times and this thing just has so much more. Ive no idea how tube amps sound THAT much more massive, but they do.

    Enjoy...and get some pics!
I will get pictures.
    I have a p-bass too,by the way.Fender std 5 with a Nordstrand j-bass pickup in bridge pos.
I agree with you,the Orange sound great with it.

  20. Thanks for the input Monz and Musicman20!
    Good!
I haven't really tried the Hiwatt head but i have read about some guys owning both such a head and Orange MK1.They say that they sound similar, not very different in sound or output.
The reason i went for the Matamp was that it's PTP wireing, supposed to have great components (outboard transformers and so on),weighs a little less than Hiwatt 200 and is cheaper too.
The thing is that i have tried the Orange MK3 and thought the sound was great but it was (distorting?what's the word in English)breaking up very early. It was just a tad louder than my other head Ampeg V4bh of 100w.
So the Orange MK1 would be great but they are reeealy hard to find,so,the option was Hiwatt 200,but i bought the Matamp instead.
When i talked to Jeff at Matamp on the phone he went on and on about how the Matamp delivers 200w rms clean sound, then the distortion kicks in.But can also be dialed in so the distortion starts earlier if you want.(like you said Monz)
    I can't wait ....
