1. Based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, about 10 minutes from Jn 29 of the M1

As far as I am aware, there are two previous owners, and the bass spent it's life in and around Scotland until I bought it, maybe Warwickhunt once owned it? dunno :)

2. Currently own a '76 Bicentennial Thunderbird IV, and owned one of the newer Gibson Thunderbirds a while back.

The '76 is definately a bit more of a handful than the current 'birds, due to the much larger headstock, and the big reverse wind tuners. The newer ones I really don't find the "neck dive" to be an issue at all when using a decent strap, and can't help wondering if it's one of the old chestnuts that keeps rearing its head from the old 60's and 70's models. I have an Ibanez which is far, far worse........

The three point bridge is perfectly up to the job, if the saddles have been correctly cut, I've never had a problem with them. Just have to be careful when doing string changes, as the saddles can drop out, but it's easy to work out where they go back to.

Main caveat when buying a new Gibson Thunderbird is check it over VERY carefully. A good one is a fantastic bass, but build quality issues can be an issue. :)

Love my '76 to bits. Huge tone, plays fantastic, and definately a keeper :)

3. Why thank you sir :)

Still open to trade offers, one of the following would get me very tempted;

Alembic 4 or 5 string, Elan, Europa, etc
Rickenbacker 4001/ 4003 especially in mapleglo or fireglo. Fancy something different to go with my Jetglo 4001.
Fender Jazz. Would love a 70's jazz with rosewood and blocks. would consider 75 reissue, custom shop, or one of the new 4 or 5 string deluxe models.
Gibson. Thunderbird, Grabber, Ripper, RD Artist.

Might also consider one of the "super Jazzes" such as Sadowsky, etc, either four or five string.

Any bass offered for trade must be in nice condition, and preferably with case. Not really into the relic thing :)

4. Reluctantly offered for sale, or for trade, USA Zon Sonus Custom Special 4 string, with carbon composite neck, Bartolini Jazz style pick ups, and Zon Polyfusion pre amp. The bass has a swamp ash body, bubinga top, finished in high gloss lacquer. The bass comes with genuine Zon hard case.

In excellent condition, minmal fret wear. One very minor scratch on rear of body (have to look very hard for it), one tiny ding behind bridge, and small marks around the sealing caps on the machine heads, as the screws required tightening inside, that hold the main gears to the shafts. All fixed, and no problems.

The controls on the bass are stacked bass/ treble, master volume, pan, and mid, which has a push pull pot to add further variety to the mid range setting.

Currently strung with heavy DR DDT's, and tuned C standard, but I do appreciate this will not be to everyones liking, and am willing to fit new strings, and set the bass up prior to sale.

Price- £1300 firm.

Bass is located in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, close to Jn 29 of the M1.

You're more than welcome to pop round for a brew, and spend as long as you like trying the bass out. Would be very reluctant to post, and would definately prefer not to post outside of the UK.

Trade wise, the following float my boat...Alembic 4/5 string, Rickenbackers, old Gibsons, 70's Fender Jazz. Cash either way to make up any difference in value considered. Wouldn't want a Stingray, or a Warwick. Not that there is anything wrong with them, just don't get on with them.

5. Just bought an amp off Mike, and he's a really top guy. Got there early afternoon, and it was gone 7 in the evening before we had finished having a noodle!

Very trusting, and trustworthy chap, and would not hesitate to meet up with Mike again.

Thanks for all the hospitality mate,

Rich :)

6. As you have mentioned, you're a pick player, which is good, as Ric's can be awkward for finger style playing, thanks to the huge chrome surround at the bridge pickup.

I have a Jetglo 1980 4001, and I love it to bits. Ric's do feel a bit weird to play at first, thanks to the enormous bridge, and the string spacing being parrell all the way down the board. Another thing with Ric's, the outer two strings are very close to the edge of the board, so it is very easy to push the string over the edge, and bum a note. The neck on mine is very skinny, and it has a nice low action.

They are an acquired taste, and a bit of a marmite bass.......either love em, or hate em! Personally, I love them :)

I think you need to find somewhere that will let you have a decent go on one before you buy. If I haven't played mine in a while, at first it feels weird, but after I have settled back in with it again, I love playing it.

I think it fair to say that you would probably find it a lot easier to sell an old Fender, than an old Ric, but with all the Fender clones out there these days, a Ric will always stand out from the crowd :)

7. I've got the estate car now, so can bring along more toys :) I'll bring along the Ampeg rig this time, and can bring along a few of the following;

1967 Gibson EB2
1976 Gibson Thunderbird
1991 Gibson Les Paul
1993 Alembic Orion 5 string
1980 Rickenbacker 4001
1980's Jap Crap Precision with Delano's
1990's Squier Precision Special with SD 1/4 Pounders
Squier Jazz with EMG's
1990's Legend P Bass (where it all started for me)
Ibanez IC200 "Iceman" bass

8. Pick for me. I can play finger style to an average level, but definately prefer pick. I play mostly fast, driving, rock music, and also like playing chords and stuff. I find that I can get nice round warm tones playing up near the neck, and aggressive tones near the bridge, so that'll do me :)

I am trying to improve my finger style, as I can see the benefits that are available. It's taking a while, but getting there :)

9.
Not really my sort of thing so can't really comment too much on it, but it seems to do well at what its ment to do if that makes sense :)

Think my biggest piece of advice would be to move away from Myspace & onto Facebook.

Main reason is that Myspace is just so damn slow nowadays its unreal, and the network on facebook is so much bigger :)

Thanks Jake,

We are on FaceBook as well. Have to admit that FaceBook does seem a much better tool for self promotion, and networking

10. Hi Chaps,

Thought it about time I aired our musical exploits on this fair forum!!

We're called Valve, and describe ourselves as being alternative/rock/metal. We like to think that our style is fairly unique, and our songs tend to feature melancholic melodies, which switch to raging riffs, and then some. As for influences, the singer guitarist likes a lot of the old skool punk stuff, and metal, the drummer listens to a lot of power metal type stuff, and I tend to listen to a lot of classic rock, as well as stoner and doom.

You can check us out on MySpace here Valve MySpace Page

There's 4 tracks up to have a listen to. The first two were recorded DIY, and the last two were recorded live at "The Boardwalk" in Sheffield, which sound really good. "Ode To Oblivion" is one of our quieter numbers for those who aren't into full on rock music

Any feedback you guys have is more than welcome :)

I also joined another band about 7 months ago, and things are progressing well, although the hunt for a singer is proving to be a bit of an ongoing battle. Will post up some details when there is some more to share :)
