I understand what you mean about the mids... I always thought my barefaced big twin II and Tonehammer 500 was great until I tried a friends Aguilar DB112 set up (Tonehammer 500 and 2 x DB115).  I couldn't believe the mid response on his cabs, it was a lightbulb monent!  Still use my barefaced due to funding, but I'm less than stellar on it.  Doesn't answer your question, but for a vintage sound I'd be looking elsewhere.  What about the Aguilar SL range?

Sadly the Aguilar SL range does not provide the db sound. Whereas the db 112 has a more pronounced bump in the low mids, the SL112 has this bump more in the upper mids and do not have that "weight" (no pun intended).

However I’ve found a great sound where you run bass boost on and contour on but back off the bass control and boost the low mids and high mids.

You cannot achieve the same tone just using the B, LM, HM, Treb controls ( trust me I tried )

The resulting sound is fuller, more depth yet still punchy and the mid honk sound has gone. It sounds perfect with my PBass and is the best I’ve got out of this amp so far.

That is the classic G&K 800/400RB way :)

Do you have an opinion on how the Bartolini Singularity compares in style to them?

I have no idea about this, sorry. My only real Bartolini experience dates from the early 90s when I got a set of Bartolini single coils in my 77 Fender JJ (back then those were not desirable at all :)).

To my ears the Bartos were rather subdued in the highs and had no clarity at all. I ended up putting the original Fender PUs back.

The Big Singles by Nordstrand keep that typical clarity in the treble region but are never harsh, not even in an ash/maple JJ bass.

Further they got a little push in the low mids, making them absolutely perfect for pick use as well.

    I have a Marleaux Consat Custom 5

I gave some serious thought to selling it as it doesn't quite sound how I want it to. BUT it has the only 5 string neck I have ever loved so I'd like to try and get it sounding different.
This might be impossible given the construction (mahogany body with a ziricote top) but I want it to sound more like a Marcus jazz bass.

It has Delano humbuckers in it at the moment. They are very humbuckery and lack the single coil sizzle. There are not many true single coils that are a direct replacement, size-wise, but the Nordstrand Big Singles appear to be a straight swap.

Any idea if these will give me a push to the sound I'm looking for? I had a chat with Mark at Bass Direct and he thought the preamp was very neutral and wouldn't need changing at all, so that leaves the pickups.

All suggestions for my impossible holy grail are welcome!

Big Singles are, to MY ears, the best sounding ALNICO single coil PUs ever. BUT, they don't give you any Marcus vibe at all. They are fatter in the mids.

On the other hand you can get 70's style single coils by Nordstrand in a big shell. They are called Jazz Bar: https://nordstrandaudio.com/collections/5-string-soapbar-bass-pickups/products/jazz-bar-5

I had an ABM500 Evo 3 a few years back and also an ABM600 Evo 4 a little more recently. The Evo 4 is a very different beast. I found it much more preferable to the older version - you could make it sound a lot tighter, the eq is more versatile and the power amp is much improved. Hugely hefty sounding but able to cut and sparkle as well. I found the old one a bit of a one trick pony and could never get it to cut in a mix - it just sounded woolly and undefined to me.

The ABM600 Evo 4 is the only amp i've ever had that i regretted selling and i can see me having one again someday....
