Ashdown little bastard head going for £379

2. Great looking bass, if it was rosewood neck, i'd definitely have it off you. Can you (or anyone?) answer my strange question. Why does the maple neck look pale, as it would be when it left the factory, yet the headstock is nicely aged to a vintage tint? I've seen loads of basses like this, so it must be what happens, but why??

3. Thanks again guys, its exactly stuff like this that make me so happy I've found basschat.

As a seperate thing, I have a 1983/4/5 P bass, bought off a very close friend, who bought it new, and he can't remember which year he bought it!!! So unlesss I want to remove the neck, or scratchplate to check pots, I don't know either. A little job for when I get more time.

Thanks again guys, and if any of you spot a P bass late 60s early 70s, let me know.

4. Thanks guys, I knew I could rely on you.

The guy selling it works at a well known northern guitar shop (not sure I can name it, is it against forum rules?), and in reply to my question below

"Heres a bit of a question, have you any proof of the original ownership, providence that its a kosher guitar etc? As i'm sure you are only too aware, there are many dodgy dealers, forgeries, bitsa basses put together with ebay found parts and sold as originals, and the lads from (Real name deleted ) 'a well known store, recently closed down' and all the alleged stories of their dealings in stolen and/or fake etc goods"

Replied

"Hi Rich , thanks for the message ,

I understand your concerns

the bass was bought new from a ************* music shop , B.Page and Son on Wood Street

it was bought by a local band and used throughout the 70's and 80's

it has not been used since then

the precision and some other guitars were brought in to me last week as the owner of them is almost 80 now

his nephew ( who I have also known for many years ) asked me to deal with the sale of them on behalf of his uncle

his uncle , the original purchaser , has since been in the shop and confirmed the history to me

myself and (name deleted) Mr X ; the Luthier / guitar repairman at our shop , are 100% confident the bass is totally genuine

( as are the other guitars from the same guy )

Mr X and I have both been involved in guitars for over 40 years each

hope this helps put your mind at ease

all the best "

I'm not sure whether knowing its being sold via a guitar shop gives me more or less satisfaction that its genuine.

As for the price, what would you all say was fair? Ans if anyone has something similar for sale, let me know!!!

5. Dear All
My ripper is a 74 one (original body shape), and pretty much identical in colour to the one for sale here, and i'm guessing (cos i'm no authority on wood), that its maple too. Its lighter than all my precisions, but I dont have any scales so cant weigh it. The pic Spiney norm put up, looks to me like maybe it was a black bass that sbeen stripped (is that black paint inside the holes where the machine heads go, or just no light/flash so looks dark?), and they put the more grainey wood under a paint job. No idea really, just a thought, but if I didnt already have one, I would definately have this one, its the best year/colour combo imho, and in great nick too. Good lightweight bass, and has quite a bit of trebly growl and bite compared to other Gibson basses which may be available, especially the mahogany ones ;-)

By the way, didnt they originally have maple for the 73/4 ones, go to alder till 76/7 ish, then go back to maple again?

6. I paid a few hundred more for one like that, but with original case, and before all this recession thing hit the market, so probably about the right price to sell, can't see it lasting unsold for long. If it does,...........now wheres my wallet???

7. Hi there, were based in Leeds, so bit of a long jaunt up to Glasgow, and I suspect our Jim Jones revue style of Rock n Roll is not quite your dads cup of tea, but good luck finding the right band. You could of course get your own band to do it, im sure your dad would be really proud to see you up there cranking out 'blue suede shoes' etc.

8. Thanks guys, I was hoping to use crimp terminals not just cos i'm poor to middling at soldering, but thats just cos i'm out of practice, and only have lead free solder, which seem to have a poor reputation, but so I can wire (eventually) the cab to either 2 or 8 ohms, either with a switch or 2 x 4 ohm outputs depending which amp (ABM 500 or VBA) is powering it, and until I hear em, wont know which way to go. I'll give marshall technical a go, thanks again.

9. Hello all

I am trying to rewire an 8 ohm Marshall 4 x 10, fitted with Celestion 100 watt speakers, to 2 ohms so I can power it from my VBA, and need some female spade crimp terminals. I bought some from Maplins today, but the 4.8mm ones are too small, the 6.3mm ones are too big for the male spade connectors on the speakers themselves, anyone know which size I should use, and where I can get them?

Thanks in advance, basschatters

I use the "deep" switch all the time. I never use a compressor/limiter (don't like 'em). I actually think the custom control panel is pretty cool too.

FWIW, my old ABM500 (pre- Evo) consistently dusts everything else I throw against it (no idea where the "woolly" comes from either, unless you're trying to be Brian Bromberg). I'd love something lighter that sounds better (or even as good) but I haven't found it yet. Of course it depends to a great degree what you're putting through it and what you're playing it through....

+1 I'm exactly the same. BUT have fould an amp that just shades it for tone, however its the Marshall VBA!!!

11. Cheers Dan
Yes a pleasure to deal with, nice guy, great communication, really smooth transaction, even to the point of staying behind when I had to go back and pick up a cable I'd left behind, thanks again. Ps hope the Terror works out for you. When I tried the VBA out at 3/4 volume through a 4x10 and 1x15 cab combination, my fellow band mate, with his fingers in his ears said "You're a mad bastard.!!!!!...." I think this means he approves. If this is not in the right place, maybe someone can start a feedback column for you and transfer this, or let me know and i'll write it out again ;-)

Bought a Fulltone bass drive from Alex today, and his service is exemplary, from paypalling the money at 7pm Sunday night, he had it boxed in fantastic packaging (brown packing paper/strong cardboard box/polystyrene filler/original fulltone box/bubble wrap/pedal)!!!! It was then posted the next day, email sent with full tracking link and details, and arrived as I requested 48 hours later, well in time for rehearsal and gig this week. I haven't had any better service from any retailer, and would obviously recommend him.

And forgot to mention, he's a top bloke to deal with and chat to too.

13. I bought a cab off Ed yesterday, great prompt communications, descriptions, photos and price all good, and above all a really nice friendly guy to deal with and talk to.
I arrived half an hour early, just to make sure I was not going to be delayed by traffic etc, and guess what, so did he!!, we then chatted for ages so I was still only just on time for my band rehearsal later in the evening. Thanks Ed, top bloke.
