  1. Most of the time at home it will be out on its stand. The case would be for transporting to/from lessons etc. Would a bag be sufficient?
  2. Hi all, Going to be needing a hard case for my new Yamaha TRBX304 soon and have been struggling to find one suitable? Nothing seems to tell you what guitars will fit inside? Do they generally have some foam that you can cut to size or are they universal? Many thanks
  3. I've found a couple of posts and have contacted designacable and another to see what they can do for me. Thanks
  4. Thanks Happy Jack, Do you know where I can find out what other cable makers there are on here? Is there an existing thread with a list for example? I don't want anything fancy as I'm just starting out, but something with a good sound and fairly affordable. Sounds like those Fender tweeds might be a good option, too. Cheers
  5. Hi all, Just wondering what cable/cables you all recommend to link my bass to my amp. I know that with HiFi/Stereo equipment the cable quality/materials can affect the sound, making it warmer/more tinny etc. Is this the same for Bass - Amp cables? Many thanks
  6. Hi all, It has been suggested that I use a platform such as Talking Bass or Scotts Bass lessons to learn the instrument. I've had a look on the Talking Bass website and I see they have some paid courses, too. Are these worth the money or will the free content be adequate to get me started? Wondering wether to get the Beginner Bass Course or not. Many thanks
  7. Hi all, Had my first lesson yesterday and really struggled switching between my middle finger and ring finger when trying a chromatic scale. It just wouldn't stretch far enough. Would I be better off trying the 1-2-4 method, or is it a good thing to persevere and learn to use all four fingers? Cheers
  8. Thanks all. Plenty to work through now! 🤣
  9. Hi all, Would anyone be able to recommend some of their favorite bassists? I'd like to have a watch/listen to a few. In terms of music genres, I like pretty much everything but I'm leaning towards the funk side of things with bass. I love slap bass lines and soloes. I've been watching some Victor Wooten, Lee Sklar and Charles Berthoud but need many, many more Cheers
  10. Thanks all. I'll definitely go into my local music shop and have a feel of the models I like the look of. To begin with at least, I'll mostly just be practicing solo through headphones. I'd like to be able to play along to backing tracks as well. Can this be done with an amp or would I need a mixing desk for that as well? I think mixing in tracks will come later on so wouldn't be one of my priorities to start with. Cheers
  11. Well, turns out it's not an option now! He's got rid of the guitars already. So now the question is: Yamaha TRBX174EW Yamaha TRBX204 Squier Affinity Jazz/Precision Bass or slightly more expensive: Yamaha TRBX304. These all look pretty good from the reviews/videos I've been looking at. In terms of aesthetics I really like some of the colour options available on the 174EW. Specifically the Tobacco Brown Sunburst and the Mango Wood Bass, Natural.
  12. Hi all, So I've been looking at my options for a first instrument. It has come to light that a friend of my father who took up the bass but didn't persue it has offered to let me have his guitar and amp for free. I don't yet know what the instrument is but will hopefully find out later today. For someone who's just starting out, would you say a free instrument is perfectly fine, regardless of what model it is? I'm guessing most beginner basses are fit for purpose, at least for the very short term to see if I think it's something I want to continue with before I spend a lump of money? The alternative would be to invest in something like a Yamaha TRBX304 for ~£340, plus an amp. What are your thoughts? Many thanks
  13. Great advice, thank you. I'll make sure I keep my wrists straight as I can, and will look into wrist supports that won't be too cumbersome. Good to see another member from York! Thanks for the info - I know what you mean about pressing down and gripping too hard. To be honest that's probably exactly what makes my wrists flare up in the first place, whatever I'm doing. This time it was working in the garden.
  14. Thank you. This is all new to me at the moment so looking for all advice I can get. As I haven't started learning yet it's just about trying to minimise any pain I already have and that playing the bass might trigger or worsen. I guess these are all things I can discuss with my teacher as well.
  15. I haven't actually started yet. I have my first lesson on the 5th. It's something I've had for years on and off though. Usually triggered by holding onto something for a long time or when some impact goes through it for example when doing garden work with a shovel etc, or when some twisting motion is put on my wrist un-doing a tight jar or car wheel nut etc.
  16. Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can help. I'm taking my first bass lesson on the 5th Nov and I just wanted to get some advice regarding some wrist/thumb pain I suffer from on and off. I'm hoping it won't affect my learning too much but are there any other members here that suffer from wrist/hand problems and are there any exercises you do or ways of reducing the pain? Cheers
  17. To be honest, I don't know! I've not been diagnosed with arthritis but I've never really gone to the GP to ask about it. Could be RSI - many years of computer games. I'll pop a post in the general discussion later and see if anyone can help Thanks.

    Hi!

Hi all, I'm based in York and am thinking of learning the bass. Have my first lesson booked for the 5th but don't have my own gear yet. Looking at the Yamaha TRBX304 as my first instrument but will get 2-3 lessons under my belt first. I have two concerns about learning and hoped I might get some thoughts from some experienced players. I sometimes get pain in my wrists and my thumb joints and wondered if this might prevent me from learning in any way? It's not a constant pain and it comes and goes. Looking forward to getting started! Cheers
