1. A poverty-stricken student has asked me if I can sell her Cort left-hand bass for her. Walnut coloured, active, two pickup, very good nick, new strings.

If anyone's interested, I'll post pics. Looking 75 quid delivered by carrier.

  2.
Got it yesterday and haven't read that interview yet.

There are all sorts of weird typesetting problems creeping back in.
It like the infuriating thing Bass Player mag does, where you have to cut from page 31 to page 52. But without the signpost.

<not that Bass Player has that many pages these days>

  3. More fantastic posts.

I first heard Billy Cobham on the Mahavishnu's 'Birds Of Fire' album, which I played to death as a youngster.

This is the track for me:

    Probably the greatest drummer ever.

  4. On the early Beatles songs - which were my era - I can't hear anything special at all. I've often heard people mention him, but can't hear anything different from the other 60s bands.

Please enlighten me to something that he did that was special.

  6. This is going to be the most ongoing debate ever in the history of Basschat, and it's never going to be resolved. Maybe people who think Marcus is famous for his slap playing will (hopefully) check out his back catalogue and realise there is much more to him. Same with Victor Wooten.

I suggest you look at the live DVD 'Jack Of All Trades', which includes interviews with eminent bass players and a live concert with Marcus and his truly sublime band.

The comments from the other players say it all. He's a great person and a great multi-talented musician.

    Give it a go. :)

  7.
Marvin, you could also look at Alexis Sclarevski and Stu Hamm Slap bass DVD's (probably on you tube), if you want to just check out some (IMHO) of the 2 best instructional videos. There's no substitute for 1:1 with your tutor of course, but to supplement dipping your toe in the slap bass pond (often murky) you could do worse.

This DVD is the best one out there. Been around for years. Foolproof if you stick to each exercise. :)

  8. That's it, I'm going to use Fat Beams on my Roscoe 5. They're not cheap, but hey, I'm worth it.

PS. Note to self...start wiping strings after the gig. I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't be arsed. Besides, I'm too busy with the groupies. :)

  9.
I've been playing for 32 years and have found MY STRING. I'm not suggesting that anyone else should use them - no I'm just glad that after 30 years of trying different strings I have found the string that totally suits me and gets the tone and feel I'm after. I love them so much they are on my fretted and fretless electric basses. Yum Yum.

    Davo
Er, what are they then, Davo? :)

  10.
Yeah I went to YouTube and typed in "Marcus Miller", everything on the first page was Marcus Miller slapping, I don't get why people think slapping is all he does.

The first result was Marcus Miller slapping Moonlight Sonata. :)
It's like everyone labelling Stephen King as a horror writer. Bound to happen, but there's much more to him.

  11. I'm not expecting a massive response to this, but does anyone else (apart from Bubinga) think this is one of the coolest bass lines ever?

PS. Only another 19 posts to go, then I'm done for the day.
