    Hey!

In continental Europe I believe Bassfreaks is a dealer, should you be looking at new examples.

You might also consider a direct import of a second hand example. Ishibashi often has several examples available and the prices end up slightly cheaper after customs charges etc. than those available in Europe - if you can find them.

Good luck with your search. Enjoy!

Cheers for that. I’ll have a look those sites.

I haven't played Moon (yet) but have owned (and still own) quite a few other niche Japanese brands and, in my experience, they're generally a substantial improvement on your average big F (USA, MIJ, old and new ones which I no longer own) in every aspect. Forget the name on the headstock, trust your hands and your ears.

I definitely see that. I will have to search if the uk or EU have distributors of these Japanese brands.

On trusting your hands and ears, I couldn’t agree more.

What can I say?, except that I completely agree!

If only they were a teeny bit lighter, then all would be perfect. Very underrated builder with top notch Japanese quality.

The clue to your question is in my user name.

wow yes you really have a rack of moon basses.

I done more digging I played the groove master. Compared to my law suit Yamaha p bass the moon felt light. It was just so refined.

What’s a shame is that due to business moving more towards online people don’t get to try different brands. I also tried the G&L 1000 from the 80’s. It was really nice also.

I have to put a search on moon basses in the bay and reverb now.

  5. I went to the bass gallery to get some tlc sone with my bass.

I played at least 8 fender p basses. Two from Japan the rest from the 70’s. Out of the 8 1 mij a pb-62 sounded nice but the neck was too shallow for me. The other a 73 which was nice until. Went upstairs and tired a moon gm4!

Didnt like the colour but my days was it amazing to play. Had a telecaster neck but it felt so smooth to play. Didn’t feel massive at all. I was able to play pocket funk real nice.

This bass was a custom order. Has anyone played ,owned or owes a moon p bass?

It really made me think are fenders really that good? I normally have a “get to know you period” before I feel comfortable. This moon and a Larry Graham jazz from moon didn’t have that at all.

I know this is not answering your question, but which headphones do you use?

You would want them to be FRFR, that is higher end "studio" headphones (you should expect spending at least 120£ or so for a decent pair), not "Hi-Fi" ones.

I’ve got akg k52 headphones. I used someone’s bose noise cancelling headphones which you need batteries to activate that feature. Once the Bose headphones is driven by the batteries, my lord it made a world of difference. My akg seem wanting compared to the Bose.

issue with headphones is there are so many. Audio technica ath-m50 are ment to be amazing, never listened through them though.

Part of the fun of looking for an amp is trying them out. I know you say it's unlikely to go out of the house but you can spend a lot of money on a brand new amp that really doesn't go very loud. My advise is always go for more power than you think you need, just in case you do get that out of the blue gig sometime in the future. Amp manufacturers have all gone the small but LOUD rout in recent years and if you can buy secondhand you can get a small, light and loud amp that won't take up much room in your house.

I've owned some big amps and cabs in my time but now own a Markbass CMD 121 P, which ticks all the boxes above. You can get one secondhand for the £400 you mentioned above.

great advise. I think I tried the markbass you own. It was monstrous. Shock the basement of the shop even with me trying to tame it.

I love the sound of the acoustic control amps back in 70’s. The videos I’ve seen show them being the size and weight of a teenager lol. You are so right about how things have changed.

the laney digbeth seems interesting also. I’ll have to head to Anderton’s to try it. It’s interesting that it doesn’t have a gain control knob. Just to channels (clean and tube) both with volumes so I presume the tube emulation channel acts like the gain.

Or Phil Jones bass. Super clean tone, extreme lows and to be blunt the resale value sucks so buy second hand to get a fillet mignon rig for beefburger money.

Edit - There's a GSS combo/cab rig in the classifieds in London for £20 over your budget. I can't think of a better solution for you.

I’ll check it out. I always felt that Phil jones is perceived as hi-fi sound

If you’re a soul / funk player then Ampeg, Ashdown, Fender may be a bit vintage sounding for you

Mark Bass would be the way to go I think as they are better at the clean tone stuff

Funny stuff it say this as when I was in wunjo guitars the 12” markbass combo was what my ear preferred.

I’ve been thinking of maybe getting an amp head and cab. Which ever is more cost effective. Also I realised I need to up my budget.

If it's a Rootmaster then you can bypass a lot of the EQ etc and get it sounding fairly neutral, run your MLD pedal into the input and you get the sound of that pedal.

cheers for the response. I’ve seen a fair amount of secondhand ashdowns some may be an older generation of the rootmaster as the amp layout looks very similar.

    I’ll keep this in mind.

  11. i went to wunjo in central london. Tried the fender rumble, ampeg, markbass. Really didn't like the fender. Mark bass was killer!!! killer price though lol. ampeg rocket bass was alright nothing like the markbass. I may have to head to andertons to try GK,Hartke and laney.

Yes, I agree. I have one, the 100, great rehearsal amp for my jazz and blues bands. I’ve not gigged it, but I reckon it would be fine. I got mine for £150 off Facebook.

    Rob

wow that is a bargain price.

I use these in all my P basses, the embedded springs in the form means that they never ever sag, they are by far the best I've used, and for £4 for two, well worth the money.

I need to get some foam for my p bass. Dies one strip fit the length of each pickup?

I have owned a wide array of supposedly top quality basses over the years and Japanese-made Yamaha's are up there with the absolute best. The construction quality is as good as it gets and the designs are really clever. And it's always been that way.  More than 40 years ago Yamaha solved the issue of the inherent imbalance between the P and J pickups. Not many other bass builders have managed the same trick even now.

The BB2000 is an intrinsically lively sounding bass, but in a good way, I hasten to add. If I were to analyse it I would say that compared to a traditional Fender-style PJ bass the BB basses have a much wider frequency range, I.e the bass goes deeper and the treble much higher. There's a Fender lurking in there somewhere but it's just one element of the unique BB tone.

    nicely put.

I went for it! I left an offer but knew I'd be heart broken if someone else got it first because its literally perfect - so I ended up buying it for asking price 15 mins later hahah

nice one mate. I’m glad I sent you the link. You are in londo so that’s a plus. He has an acoustic pre amp. Man I love the sound of those but it’s over kill for home use.

I messaged the seller asking if he had any other basses and he gave me some great advice about buying from Japan. Seemed very genuine.

Also as japan is in recession the yen is very low atm. When I checked yesterday it’s 190yen to the pound. A tokai I saw sold for 60000 yen. That is just over £300.

Yes, a broad palette but no compromise in the sounds. Very top tier bass.

The neck is also important I think. Just chunky enough but still very fast.

I’m tempted to conclude that the BB2000 construction plays a big part in the quality of the tone. You can hear the sound of the thing unamplified and feel it in your fingers. Solid!

I have a 78 Yamaha pulser 400 which is a lawsuit copy of a late fender p bass with 40mm nut (mine is 39) and a deep chunky neck. Funny thing is it doesn’t feel like a baseball bat. It just feels right. Playing fast isn’t not an issue at all. The fender 60’s neck profile doesn’t agree with my tendons in my forearm after I broke my wrist.

Definitely understand you on construction. Japans craftsmanship has always be so refined. Your mass has a neck through with ebony fretboard so it plays a big part.

You seemed to have found a keeper. Delete all your saved searches on basses you are after and enjoy the beauty lol.

oh how would you describe the jazz pickup?
