If you're after vintage tone, a modern bass with a properly fitted GK pickup and a Roland V-Bass will do. I know because I use such a system myself. (although I don't have extensive experience with real vintage instruments.) I quite often use the vintage P model for the occations when that sound is fitting, which is quite often, actually. It also does the Rickenbacker sound, which I like, and vintage Jazz and Hofner, which I don't use all that often, being partial to the more rock-oriented tones.
Perhaps sometime this summer, some afternoon when the weather is bad and I've nothing to do, I'll record some sound samples of these V-Bass models and post them on my web page..... so you can judge for yourself, eh? -
Wow! Very cool. I remember seeing the fingerboard with the inlay earlier, good to see some progress. I think the Bee design is fabulous. And the cartoon-style rabbit inlay goes well with it.
Love the woods, too. -
Thanks!
I wish I had written down what bass models I used for the various tracks. It's not always easy to hear - on some tunes the bass is a bit buried in the mix (mostly on the softer songs). I remember using the upright model on the track "Where I long to be", but it isn't easy to tell by listening to it.... The upright model sounds great though. Perhaps I ought to record some sound clips of the V-Bass alone..... -
We were in the studio just after Easter holiday, and here are some sound clips from the finished CD. Not very much - four clips about a minute long each. (the last clip is from a track by the Arc Singers from New Orleans)
I used my Benavente fretless 6 and Surine fretted 6 through the Roland V-Bass for all tracks. Worked great.

AccuGroove ought to be mentioned. Very good sound, quite light wheight, rather expensive.
I own a pair of Tri-112L cabs which I've done a bit of touring with, and I am even more pleased with them now, having experienced their unfailing good sound in a variety of venues.
The Tri-112L cab is a three way system, with one 12" woofer, a 6" midrange driver, and two 1" textile dome tweeters. 8 ohm. Don't remember power handling, think it was 400 W or thereabout. Specs are on the web page, you know. Lots of other cabs too.
