I'm not so sure about that....it may seem that way from my (and your?) age perspective, but it's probably not true, and there was lots of formulaic stuff in previous eras.

Yeah there was, but nobody went running to their lawyers over it (well, Taurus did of course). I just think modern day "musicians" who write a 3 minute song and think they've invented something new and unique are a bit up themselves that's all. It's probably just my age.....

Barenaked Ladies at the RAH on Monday night, hopefully.

The 4 piece is down to 2 at the moment as they continue the tour, hopefully they will be back up to 4 by Monday.

KT Tunstall is one of the support acts and is one of the reasons for going to this particular gig.

KT Tunstall's live band are gas. We saw them supporting Santana a couple of years ago

And make sure you know your titles

I was in a band that wrote its own original music, but until the songs had a lyric and an actual title, we would number them. All good, until the singer made the setlists and only put titles on it. I was completely lost, after having worked on these songs for such a long time and only ever using the number to refer to them. I've since learned all titles by heart but we also kept putting both the number and the title on the list.

Still, I'm sure there must also have been some fans who have been extremely puzzled when they took home a handwritten setlist that only said 17 - 24 - 21 - 5 - 23 in sharpie

Yeah, I think Blur did that...........

Looking through the 'what car do you use' thread and there seems to be a few people with small cars just taking one bass and one amp to a gig. So got me thinking, what do most people take... just the basics with no backup, or everything except the kitchen sink?

I fall very much into the latter category and catastrophise at all the things that could go wrong. When I first started gigging I didn't even have spare strings, then one night the guitarist said 'what happens if you break one?'. Fair point, and from that point onwards I couldn't stop thinking about what would could go wrong.

I usually bring 3 or 4 basses anyway but I also bring a spare amp/cab, obviously spare leads (usually quite a few), spare strings (each bass has a different set, so I bring spares for each), then there's my box of stuff with duck tap, soldering iron, selection of spare connectors (neutrix Jack's, xlr, jack chassis, 9v etc), spare psu's, fuses (various; mains but also the ones found inside the amps we're using), plus a few adapters (xlr to jack, stereo to mono jack etc), then a selection of extension leads, tools (snips, allen, screw drivers, etc), mains tester plug, multi meter.... I'm sure I've left some stuff off the list! Plus spare effect pedals for my favourite ones I can't do without. And I have even been known to carry spares for other musicians if I think they're not very prepared. Was in one band where I always brought along a spare snare and bass drum pedal, plus a spare mic for the vocalist.

And that's why I need a Volvo 240 estate at least to get my gear to a gig!

What if your car breaks down with all that junk in it?

We just got paid for a gig we aren't playing till next Friday in a GK pub. Never had that before (although we haven't dished it out yet in case anyone comes down with Covid beforehand and it gets scratched)  😂

Didn't know Gallien Krueger ran pubs 🤔

Anything by Uzeb or EST, but these are bands where the bass (Alain Caron) or double bass (Dan Berglund) is totally integrated in the composition process.

    And those extraordinary albums :

    Adfa by Jonas Hellborg,

    Bass Time by Offground Tag,

    Bestial Cluster by Mick Karn,

    Discipline by King Crimson,

    East West by Bill Frisell,

    Hejira by Joni Mitchell,

    Rebirth by Aka Moon,

    Space Ritual by Hawkwind,

Trio in Tokyo by Michel Petrucciani,

    Upper Extremities by Bruford Levin,

    Voice by Hiromi,

We get Requests by The Oscar Peterson Trio.

    And a lot more...

I haven't heard any of those before but after you've gone to all the trouble to put them in alphabetical order I feel obliged to make the effort. Well done sir!

  7. Well you can't really expect a thick B string to sound the same as the thinner E string, it's not there to give you a direct alternative. I play exclusively 5 string basses, and I don't go out of my way to use the B string, it's just there if I need it. A big fat B string will always have a slower response, more overtones, a duller overall tone and be somewhat more difficult to play faster passages on, but the trade off is that it gives you a different fingering option when playing certain patterns and it gets you down below the E when you need it. I think the key is to use the B string judiciously, only where it is the best or only option. For me the money is in the middle three strings, round about the 5th to 8th fret. YMMV

Only just got round to posting but not much to recall. Sat night pub gig, not that many punters in and the area we were given to play in really suited to a solo player with backing tracks we ended up across a corner of the bar which meant gtr/vox was pretty much invisible to the bulk of punters so he was miserable all night. On top of that he now says he's got a dodgy LFT result back and is having a pcr test done to check. His wife is on the vulnerable list so he's rightly concerned. This week's rehearsal cancelled which gives us 1 potential go before xmas to run through a shed load of stuff we don't normally play for a NYE's bash. It'll be a car crash can see it coming. Ithought we were a bit lacklustre on Sat but a guy we all know who's been in many bands over the years popped in and said it sounded fine. One punter came up to us after the gig and said he'd enjoyed it so much he offered to buy us all a drink so a bit of positive feedback. That's probably it until the dreaded NYE 3 x 45min fiasco in the making.

Sometimes those "impending car crash" gigs turn out to go really well. And they will all be off their faces by 10pm anyway, so just relax and enjoy! Hope the dreaded virus stays away, cancellations are our biggest enemy ATM

  9. We played a Xmas function last night, it was a blast. We hammed it up for the punters - Saturday Night's Alright, Wish It Could Be Xmas, Livin La Vida Loca and all that, got about 60 people on the dance floor, the rest were outside vaping as usual or staring at their phones. The punters were a tough nut to crack at first (a bit of Covid caution we think) , but once they were up they were up for the entire night so that was a good result. Interesting point though, we had a last minute rethink of the setlist and decided to throw out Valerie as we thought it might cause a stampede to the bar. When we came to that point in our set our singer/guitarist, who starts that particular song off, forgot we'd axed it so we played it anyway and it turned out to be the number that got the party started. I mean, how can you sit through I Wish staring at your phone, then jump up and start dancing to Valerie? Nothing like knowing your audience (not!).

I had a Wal mkI custom a few years back that required a neck shim in order to increase the string break angle, as strings used to regularly/easily jump out of the saddle grooves. So even the alleged “best” makers can produce basses that still require a shim.

Wouldn't string retainers have been a better fix for that?

Solos are for boring old fashioned bands.

Every note I write and subsequently play has been carefully considered and orchestrated ahead of time to to be the best possible note (IMO) to go with what the other musicians are doing at any given moment in the song.

The song is the most important thing.

Wow! Someone better tell Dizzy Gillespie

    A big +1 for this.

I don't often watch anything more than once but this set on Youtube with his Dad, and Gene Coye on drums is beautiful His tone and taste, with a foot in the traditional and a foot in the modern day, is brilliant.

I love how he has his stage pass hanging round his knees (8.11 to 8.20) So sweet!
