    Hallo @inthefields und herzlichen Willkommen.

For your fretless, with the active preamp if it's a 3 bands model, choose the bridge pickup, put the mids almost to the max, add a bit of bass (just after the center click) and remove a bit more of highs thanyou did with the bass. You'll start to have that mwah growling, slightly adjust to your taste all 3 bands.

If you can choose between full humbucker or single coil, opt for single coil.

If your preamp is a 2 bands, slightly boost the bass and roll back the highs.

That said a mid control is almost mandatory on a fretless as it's the mwah control.

Roundwounds also sound à la Jaco, when flatwounds have a great tendency to kill that mwah.

    Other tricks next time. 😉

By the way, I'll turn 56 this year, so you're not old.

Hey Hellzero, 4 days later I finally have to answer. Thank you for your detailed description of the sound setting on my Fretless Bass. I tried your setting and was a little satisfied with my bass again.
I was also interested in your person and I googled all of Belgium for bass players. Too much choice.
But exciting musicians. Bo Waterschoot, Michel Hatzigeorgiou . . .

I will have to buy some day an other fretless (4 or better 5 string). Im not realy happy with my 4 and 5 string bass. Only my 6string Human base ClassX is a friend for ever.

But the wish list is so big. I don't know where to start? Takamine TB10, Furch B 61, Kristall room or a Safran semi acoustic.

    Dreaming is fun . . .

Thanks again for the super friendly information.  Martin    ❄️   ☀️    🎶

    I know the problem!

There will be people on here who might be able to help - maybe @Hellzero

    Good luck 👍

Now its to late for such subjects. I will look for it on an other time. Next time when its sounds good, I forget to look what I have set the toncontrole. One day i will have a passiv fretless. I got this (squier deluxe bass), because it was nice and cheap.

I love black fingerboards whithout lines. I allways choose basses with my eyes and not with my ears. I think thats also my problem.

Do not worry. I am happy

  3. Hey, dear low-end-community. I just signed up. I live in the Middle Rhine area, 50 miles from Cologne, near the Netherlands. I'm a little older (59) and my life as a bassist began about 40 years ago.

As a young man (hippie) I learned concert guitar and, as always, the first band had too many guitarists. After the first 10 years of amateur music, making money, family and other concerns were the main focus for 30 years.

A year ago I found back my passion for bass-playing and was interested in learning fretless. I am a fan of the German luthier, Siggi Jäger, from Humanbase Basses and I own two very nice ClassX models (The Basses with the crazy shape).

Now I like to look for 6-string basses, semi-acoustic variants and also for acoustic classic basses. GAS caught me and won't let me go. I hope I'm welcome to the land of great bass builders and fantastic musicians.

    Greetings, Martin 9_9
