  1. Hi, I am an Ehrlund EAP user and I like the onboard preamp that comes with it and I'd like an extra one!

The cheapest thing for me would be to buy the preamp with the PU £415 from thomann and find someone to chip in who wants the PU on its own. (Ehrlund do recommend using the PU with the onboard preamp just to be transparent).

You could though for example use it with headway EBD 2 or EBS SCAP if you wanted to. I have tried it with both it works well I just personally prefer to have onboard controls. Some people hate stuff on their bass and might fancy a go.

    Any takers?

  2. So I'm originally a guitarist for my sins! I tried a lot of different pickups for acoustic guitar and ended up absolutely swearing by a product called the Highlander IP2. Highlander are no longer in business but an english company called headway shine the torch with similar technology.

By these broad mathematical brush strokes in theory this pick up is going to sound absolutely awesome! (Not nasal quacky and for a piezo very natural and balanced high output feedback resistant.)

This product is very niche and does require small grooves routed into the bridge feet with maple pads underneath them which I think will put off some purists. For me that doesn't seemed that much more offensive than bridge adjusters or some other pick ups that drill into the bridge or have pads under the bridge feet. If it sounds good I wouldn't mind!

I've rinsed the internet there is one on a bass in bass direct and theres about 3 reviews on the entire web - all seem on the positive side.

I'd love to know anything at all! Opinions! Experience! Whatever you have. I'd love to try this pick up especially in the London area.

  3. I’ve owned mini mark and GK MB150S and a PJB cub I now have a GR bass mini head and GR bass AT 110 cab. I’m totally sold on all of the GR stuff, it’s very loud and sounds very transparent but still very nice sounding. Also it’s extremely light. I really don’t see the other options as being in the same league for upright or electric IMO! It’s a little tricky to get your hands on though but bass direct have stuff in stock or can order it in. Some people don’t trust the carbon models for stability but I personally do and there’s wood options if you prefer that anyway!

  4. I got my GR Bass AT110 and have been using it a lot. I have to say it is what I was looking for. It is unfair to compare it to a BF one10 without a tweeter but I did try them back to back. The GR was louder, much fuller and more balanced. If they were in a fist fight the BF would probably win for sturdiness I would guess but the GR seems sturdy enough and I'm trying not to slam it around! If you like a more modern transparent sound the GR AT110 runs rings around the competition that I have heard at that kinda weight class. I also have a super midget and for me its like an ultra light weight compact version of it. It can't compete with it in terms of performance but if you want to keep things easy to carry by foot then this a like the little brother that is showing some of his older brothers potential! In this instance I'm really not convinced the carbon fibre sounds worse than wood by the way, if anything I'd say its more open sounding! There is plenty of good bass equipment out there but I think GR Bass are massively underrated. Have tried a couple of the heads too and I'm completely sold on them. Not sure the GR bass 12" stuff would sound as good as the super midget but I'm happy to have the SM as a tank of a cab that will go on forever and sound great and have the AT110 to hop around on foot and still get it done when I want to shove something on my back and get going!

For double bass. Surprised nobody’s mentioned the EA Wizzy 110. For a ten inch there’s very few lighter cabs and it’s got some very useful mid range that can be eq’d back if necessary. I never liked the BF One 10 for DB as it was too dark for my Lifeline pickup. And I never got on with the small PJB cabs; not enough elasticity if you get my drift.      But the Wizzy which I’ve had for at least 15 years is a keeper.

Thanks for that, I have heard about the wizzi 10 and 12 a few times just looked at the 10 online, 8kg with a tweeter is pretty impressive! Got a GR Bass AT 110 on order which is 3kg lighter and £50 cheaper but if that doesn't get me where I want to be I will definitely consider the wizzi!

My experience with the GR AT210 compared directly with my 2x BFone10's shows the GR to be both louder and cleaner before breakup. It will be interesting to see if putting one speaker in a box changes this. It is a small box (Gr110), but it is deeper than 210 by 10cm.

I should be able to AB the BF 110 against the GR AT 110. Will let you know as soon as I get through the dreaded lead times! How long was after ordering for you? I'm 9 days in!

What's the setup for these gigs: is there PA; is your small cab just for your own monitoring, or do the other musicians/audience rely on it too?  If if it's just for you, can you use some in-ear monitoring to assist with pitching?  The time I recall having the most success with this approach was in a theatre where we actually had some really nice monitors, but for some acoustical reason I just couldn't pitch myself, and we were running out of sound check time.  I used non-isolating earphones in that instance.

It's for a mix of little gigs all different but I got some IEM's that will be coming along for the ride when I need them for sure!

Wouldn’t that be fairly obvious though considering the BF 10s are deliberately coloured

I would have assumed it to be the case but I was interested to hear the opinion of someone who'd AB'd them.

It will certainly be easier to hear yourself with the GR than what you currently have. So you may have found your solution. It'll be interesting to hear what you think anyway.

If it works out at 5kg I will be blown away. If it was just for electric bass I wouldn't look any further than the BF one10! That logo is awesome Stevie only just clocked it!

A little puzzling that ultimate lightness is the goal. If you were looking for a less weighty alternative to an Ampeg fridge, it would be understandable, but a BF One10 (even tweetered) is already less than a one-handed carry. Your money, ofc, but that GR isn't going to be cheap.

The GR BASS  AT 110 is £50 cheaper and 3.5 kg lighter than the BF one10T. I already have a super midget which sounds incredible so I have no need for something else of that kinda weight. The BF one10 is nearly perfect and I have no problem with 7kg but its just not amazing on my double bass set up for pitching/clarity. (most double bassists say the same) The barefaced one10 T maybe the best thing out there but at £499 and 5kg and I think potentially a more transparent modern sounding 10" I think its worth a go.

My experience with BF big baby t and Big Baby 2 compared to my GR 210 and 112 is that the bottom end is bigger on the BF's. I don't have my BF's any more to do a side by side comparison, but I was always fighting a bit of boom with the BF's. That's why I bought a pair of BF one10s, and they were much better for me, although had to boost top a bit to compensate for lack of tweeters. At the end of the day I was left looking for more volume on occasions, I was pushing the one10s as far as I could without breakup.

I bought the GR at210 to add to the BF one10s, but the GR 210 was much louder than the 2 one10s and didn't pair too well. So the one10s went and I got the GR at112h instead. I think the BB2 was more FRFR than the GR cabs....although I've still to gig the GRs, only played in the house so far. I like the tighter sound from the GRs. I would be interested to try the GR at110s that are now out....had they been out when I bought the at112, I may have gone for a pair of these instead, to go with the at210.

just out of interest, the BF 210 compared to the AT 210 which one was more transparent sounding would you say?

Is it too late too mention PJB?

    o.O

I tried the bass cub I swapped it for a micromark 8" as I  felt the markbass although fairly coloured was more audible and the  PJB was unusably quiet. Would like to try some other stuff by them  at some point though.
