Sick! Admired your playing for a long time Julian. Not down in London unfortunately... maybe soon though!
-
I think I prefer P bass necks, but I'd always favour a Jazz. To be honest, both are good for different things.

It's really easy for tempos to get out of hand when you've got so much energy flying around, especially with a great crowd who are spurring you on.
One-in-five Mark King fans, maybe.
Ha, that sounds more accurate! I have noticed he's a very 'British' bass guy to love (what with being from the Isle of Wight). I could never say I was a massive fan, but some of Level 42's stuff is a lot of fun.
Excuse my ignorance but I'm having a hard time thinking about many other Status players around at the moment? -
Anthony Jackson's stuff with Chaka Khan!
Why is it a guitar player playing bass? More notes? Different technique? Why can't you play more notes or use those techniques on a bass? What would a bass player play it like? So far as I'm concerned it's all valid, as long as it fits the context of the music. When you're playing on your own, anything is valid. It's a musical instrument; do with it what you will.
That's probably true. I'm not saying it's a bad thing either, it's very much a player's prerogative how they perform. However, despite this I would describe his playing as not particularly serving of what a bass's main function is, and probably not a good indicative of how a Fodera sounds. -

Do they all sound like this? He's not going to charm anyone with a tone like that.
As impressive as that clip is, that's a guitarist playing a bass. -
Their Emperors look fantastic, but aside from that I wouldn't say they were the best looking of basses. I would however, love to try one. I saw a couple of their NYC's in the Gallery and they were hellishly overpriced. It's fine to charge what you want I guess but I don't think it's fair charging people over the odds for a name.

I think aesthetically they're very 80's... remind me a lot of Steinbergers in that respect. But what do I know, I was only born in 1989.
And honestly, as much as I believe a lot of the guys that have said 'I don't care about looking cool on stage', there really is no denying that most popular music has everything to do with fashion, and that means right down to the axe you've got in your hand sometimes as well. Aesthetic has everything to do with popular music nowadays. -

...sorry...!
Joking aside, I really want an SH-101 at the moment! -
Surprises me the amount of negativity she provokes. I happen to think she's a marvelous player. I read some of the idiotic comments that some people had posted up on the video itself. Some people shouldn't be allowed the internet...

He's had a lot of practice, I'd guess he's probably one of the most widely recorded bassists of all time. When I had the opportunity to talk to Paul Turner from Jamiroquai a while ago he told me that when he filled in for Will Lee with Paul Shaffer, Will turned up at the end of the night and was really complementary of his playing, despite how nervous Paul was when he spotted him in the wings.
His new Sadowsky looks great... I bet it plays like a dream. -

Paradise Factory's closed now I think -
The Roadhouse sometimes have decent bands on. I do love Manchester!

You can't see now, but my jaw has dropped to the floor. Great bass man.

I'm a bit of a labelhead at times, although I try not to be so snobbish with gear because I'm adamant that good gear is good gear, no matter what the price or label.
-
I have had similar problems, but the skin on my fingers is now so thick, all that happens is the skin peels down really deep into my fingers so it's like a deep cut. I say a good balance between amp/monitor volume and a more controlled technique can often help.
I like to dig in sometimes, especially if I'm playing heavier stuff... just preferable to have a nice balance, especially at practices. -
I saw them play a couple of years ago... really not so much my bass playing but the music was great and Doug strikes me as a very open and nice guy.

I for one hear a massive difference in tonal variation in alder and ash basses specifically, I don't really care so much if there aren't that many people who agree tbh. But I understand also that throwing active electronics and different pickups in a bass will have a huge effect as well. I hear difference in maple and rosewood also, and bolt-on and neck through design. I generally Fender style ash/alder basses with maple fretboards and usually passive electronics, because a. there's less to go wrong, and b. I think that that specific style of bass is completely honest, which I love.
The whole 'exotic top' thing doesn't really excite me massively, although I do love spalted maple, I think it works great as a top.
I've also got to agree with an earlier post... conversation about bass construction on a bass forum? Sacrilege!Come on, if you're not interested in the convo, don't get involved!
-
Yeh mate, I'm with you on the Liverpool thing, although chances are slim for us I think (even I'll admit it). Have a good gig
-
Yeh I'd be cool putting a Chaka Khan tune I've just got through transcribing called 'Fate'. Bass provided by Anthony Jackson... i'll proof-read it later on and send it to you if you're interested mate.

Great session player from over in the U.S. He's a bit of a monster... check him out.

And I'm not usually one for solo bass playing but this kind of blew me away:

Great stuff Simon... will check it out asap. Hope everything is good with you, haven't spoken in a while!

I guess they've got to pander a bit to their audience so suggestions like Teen Town would be out of the question.
Actually off the top of my head, I can't really think of any!

I'll do some research on that bass, where are you located?

Its actually a pretty good course and moderately well regarded, the lecturers really know their stuff and are great musicians too. Its nothing like a traditional course obviously, its not so much a course to teach you to play as to teach you how to work in the modern music industry. On the musical side of it they focus on session musicianship skills; as far as learning your own instrument its a case of the course showing you what aspects you need to improve, and giving you the resources, expertise and knowledge of how to improve them, the session musicianship stuff is pretty intense though and very good experience. Academically they teach you about the business side of the 'job' and there is also a lot of work on the more 'theoretical' academia of music.. standard analysis, journal reading, essay writing stuff, it is interresting though.
I know on internet forums because of this Jeff Berlin stuff and other factors people like to critisise any music course that isn't well established over hundreds of years of standard practice, but I think this one is ahead of the game because it focuses less on individual playing and more on actually making a career out of it and on developing the skills required for that. Who does a music course for the qualification anyway? (unless you're strictly a classical musician). Its about what you get out of it and the contacts you make.
As far as the 'under orders' thing, I'm not actually literally under orders, I played a 5 for the first year and a half then switched to 4 for a change a few months ago after I picked up a nice Cort (from here actually) that I wanted to try out. I was much better on 4 than 5 and they recommended I stick with it, and I agree.. I played 4 strings for 4 years before I switched to 5 and I just simply 'play better', I get more productive practice done, I'm technically better and I rarely even use the low notes anyway, I'm more of a middle regester guy.
I think your music teacher probably needs to stop being so ridiculously close-minded and misinformed! If one of my lecturers told me to downsize to a four I'd tell 'em to kindly 'F' off! Where abouts do you go?
Best of luck with the sale. Hope that wasn't hijacking your thread too much.
