1.
I think Noirpunk will agree you've made a good choice - he loved his so much he ended up getting an endorsement!
I picked it up last night - its great, am chuffed with it. Just need to learn to play it now!! Cheers Mikey
2. There are some god bargains to be had on ebay at the moment, I found an as new Vintage Icon V4 which retails around 230ish (rrp 280) for £123 quid. IT was an unwanted Christmas present, for a first bass, I'm chuffed with it! MIkey
3.
I'd say, budget £130 for a used bass (look in the For Sale part of the forum, here) and whatever you can spare for a lead, tuner and amp. If you are comfortable with computers, you can use your PC with amplified speakers as a bedroom practice amp, which is handy if you are moving between two residences.
Well I've finaly bought a bass! I should pick it up on friday, Its a vintage Icon V4 - the aged looking model, its an unwanted xmas present in as new condition. I've bought it off ebay for £125 which is less that the non reliced models cost. Am happy at this, so now need to hunt for an amp! Cheers Mikey
4. Thanks for the replies, I should have my bass withon the next week so would quite like to start the lessons sooner rather than later, so I dont pick up bad habits of the you tubue lessons and also as I think i'll learn faster with a proper teacher, Cheers Mike
5. Hi I'm looking for a Bass teacher, someone who will be patient with a complete beginner suffering from a mid life crisis! I live in Glossop but work away in York / Harogate during the week (school time) so could do lessons in an evening up in York/ Harrogate or weekend lessons in Glossop/Manchester/Stockport area... Does anyone have any recomendations? Thanks Mike
6.
Couldn't comment on Cort basses, but the shop would be Richard's Guitars (formerly Regent Guitars). Good VFM, IMO. Plus it's a real shop, not an internet re-seller. Chaz, the tech, is a good guy and did a nice set up on a guitar my mate bought.
Yeah thats the shop, they only stock cort as a brand, but the write up on the site highly recomends them, will see what I can find out about them, Cheers
7. Thanks for the replies guys I've updated my profile to include my location, during the week this is York, at weekends its Manchester. Having spent a good while looking through the pages on here it seams that the quality of instruments even at the "bottom" end of the market are of a reasonable standard and I should end up with something quite playable. Does anyone have any experience of Cort models? My friend has recently bought a Cort guitar from an online shop in leamington spa that specialises in them and they do a full set up on all purchases in with the price, so I presume from somewhere like that it would play quite well?? Cheers Mikey
8. Hi, Pics would be good if you could put them up? Cheers Mikey
9. Hi Guys, I posted in the introductions section that i was thinking of buying the suire affinity p package with the amp etc as I thought it seamed a good deal for 160 quid and you got everything. However, a couple of people posted saying that maybe it would be better to save up and buy a better quality bass, which got me thinking and I now have a couple of questions... If I were to buy a better quality bass, say a squire modified at around 200, would I be ok to play on this without an amp for a while whilst I saved up some more for the amp etc, How much do I need to spend to get a reasonable quality bass to start off on, I've seen the vintage V4 going for 130 which has good reviews by people on here and I would then have enough money to buy a cheapish amp with... With regards to amps, what sub 100 amp is recomended? I've seen the microcube rx for 100 new which seams a good deal? I'm not adverse to second hand either, so will keep an eye out on here aswell for bargains! advice please Mikey
10.
Hello Mikey, I found that my local independent music shop wouldn't budge on price regarding some items whilst I was looking for my (recently aquired) first bass, a proper "Take it or leave it....thats the price" approach was what they had. I got a good deal from the Music Room (Notts) in the end. Go for the larger suppliers, I think they may be a bit more receptive to a bit of a barter.
Thanks for the replies guys, I've thought about saving up a bit more money and getting something better, but i'm not sure what "feels" better when trying things out, so thought that if I just got something basic for a while then I could upgrade later if my ability warranted it... However I do like the look of the squire vintage models and they are not that much dearer, and I could then look for a 2nd hand amp to keep costs down... I'm also happy at looking for a 2nd hand bass, It's just i'm not to sure what i'm looking for / at!! Although I have to admit it is fun looking! Cheers Mikey
11.
i'm not expecting much from the amp, just enough to get some sound to work with and i have my ashdown should we require any more volume but i doubt it. also i've wanted to have a play on a jazz for a while now so we both kinda get a xmas prezzie out of this
How are you & your daughter liking the bass? I think I'm going to get one of these.... Cheers Mikey
12. Hi Guys, been lurking around on here for a while and decided to sign up and say hello! Am a complete newbie and dont have any experience of playing. The only knowledge I have is what I've read on here so far! I went out today with the intention of buying a bass and so set out to my local music shop (dawsons in stockport) having tried a few different models I decided I really liked the Squire Affinity P model which fell into my price range. I'd had a look on here and various on line shops before setting out to the shop to compare prices etc and hoped to be able to use these to negotiate with the shop to strike a deal. I tried a Farida P copy (dawsons own brand i think) and it was ok, but the squire felt nicer and was cheaper... Dawsons wanted 140 quid for the guitar on its own, but wanted 215 for it in the start playing pack with amp, gig bag dvd strap tuner etc. I've seen these cheaper on the web and hoped that dawson's would price match or drop it to a lower price to encourage me to buy it - I said I was wanting to buy it today, but they werent interested. I would've gladly paid 180/190 quid or so for it from them as it was in the shop and i got to try it etc, but the sales guy wasn't helpful or bothered. So it looks like i'm going to get it from the web instead. I don't really want to do that, but 190 was my upper budget and I can get it for 160 of the web, thats 30 quids worth of books / dvd's to get aswell!! Cheers Mikey
