1.
So, XLR connectors then. Are they designed to work as a "stereo" connection (left/right/ground), or should one XLR connector only carry one channel. And what's the difference between balanced and unbalanced and in what applications should they be used?

    I'm not very bright.

attached links from the Soundcaft site worth a look:

  2.
Thinking about getting one for my rack. I've checked the Samson PS10 and Furman MX-8, both quite cheap. Are they any good? Any recommendations on other models or brands? Not looking to spend a fortune though. :)

    Cheers!
got three or four for sale - 2 ART and a few Behr, see link below:

The ART have full protection while the Behr are dist only. All male/ female connections already made up and will throw them in.

    pm if interested

  3.
Has anybody ever used guitarguitar for mail order? i've only just heard of them but no nothing about them. they have lots of choice and decent prices but has anybody had good/bad dealings with them?
Used Newcastle shop. No frills but run by highly experienced musos and lot of gear in such a small shop. Also stock entry level through to very high end instruments.

I would have no issues going to them

I have one of these on trial and I was wondering if anyone has had much experience with them or other power conditioners and had any interesting thoughts or opinions to share.
I'll hopefully be able to draw my own conclusions when I finally get some plugs that work with it.
The AC outlets are in the form of Female IEC sockets and nobody makes male IEC to female UK power socket cables.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't make my own? I was planning on getting the stuff from Maplin tomorrow.
Furman are the daddy when it comes to this gear. Mine weren't at that level but still one of the best pieces of kit I bought for my racks. As well as providing protection, good indicators of what you are drawing when on site supply is going to fall down. Especially when a lot of venues only really use domestic 13amp ring main. Seen threads here where they are deemed to be a waste of time but I disagree. How many times have musos gigged in pubs and can hear the bar fridge clicking on through the pa......... seen programmed pedals fall down with this type of 'noise'.

Nah, no reason why you can't make your own up cos they are not normally supplied and if you do buy them from MAPLIN are around £5 each but never the lengths you want.

I used ART power dist/ cond units which are similar. Bought some 13-15 amp cable (kettle spec) and the bits from Maplin for a few quid each. Gave a very tidy loom in the back of the cab with only one 3 pin plug for each case set up - far tidier........see below........all of this powered with just three plugs and no lecky interference........

    Hope this helped............

Been along time since I done a gig down there but is the Bolton Sound House still running?

  7.
I've been playing bass about four and a bit years now and for most of that time I have said 'you don't need to be able to read music to be a good musician', which I still kinda stick by. But alas with the possibility of going for a career in music; grades, sight reading and theory are seeming a better idea.

So basically a few months ago I decided to take a grade 3 exam just to try it out and passed with destinction. I found it so easy that i decided to skip to grade 5 which i took a couple of weeks ago. Just a few minutes ago I got the result which is another destinction. Again I havn't really found it very challenging so I have decided to go for grade 8 next time. Obviously grade 8 will be more of a challenge and i'll take a lot longer to practice for it, but I hope to take the exam around the autumn 2009 exam period.

    ;)

So who else round here has done any grades?

(I realise quite a few people on here will disagree with the formal approach to music but I still only play because I love doing it and I started off completely self taught)
Congrats on getting your grades.

Did up to grade 5 guitar and started 6 but didn't finish it. Overall made a huge difference to my knowledge because I started exploring a lot of the theory behind it. I suppose it is not for everyone but it worked for me.

  8. Sold some gear to Phil, smashing guy to deal with and good comms throughout. Was in his neck of the woods this week and arranged to meet up but unfortunately I was nearly an hour late.

Many thanks for hanging around Phil.

Deal in confidence with this guy.

  9.
Hmm but i thought i saw the ebay ad and it looked in perfect condition, Sold it on for just over 700 i think.
Yep you possibly did see it. What I heard was that the deal went through for a lot more than 700 but was trashed on route to the buyer. Pretty confident of my source.

I am being pretty unfair I suppose and not just a little green which is why I am sniping. If i had been quick off the mark I would have picked up an MM for half price as well when REVERB were clearing and also been suitably smug..... ;) .........am I the only one who sometimes feels that true bargains are only heard about after the fact?? :P

meant to ask, what is the vampyre like to play? Don't think I have ever seen one short of hanging on the top shelf.......

    ps: sorry, highjacked this thread.......

  10.
Yup it is, was sold for 500, The musicman that was at the same price was bought by a Reverb employee and flipped on ebay for a profit.
To make you feel better, have heard guy who got the mm cheap didn't make a dime. Heard it got crunched by the carrier and they would only pay out purchase price and not value......normally feel sorry about losing an instrument like that but hey, easy come easy go

ok I admit to being bitter and twisted when profiteering is involved ;)

  11. Burpster,

You have excelled yourself with this collection - loverlyyyyyy ;)

What we need is a pinned thread for bass porn - think you could arrange it?? Not just for PRS but all the luverly gear that is out there. Even better, a gallery section.

    Thoughts?

  12.
So I like to have my cab mic'd at gigs, but venues rarely have an appropriate microphone for the job really. With the rig I have planned, I'm going to want to be a little more insistent about the mic'ing situation, so I don't want to be met with 'we don't have enough mics for that' or anything else, so I'm really considering buying my own microphone for the job. Could also come in handy for home recording our stuff should we ever get to doing that.

    Soundguys will probably hate me.

But what is the best type of mic to buy for this?

I'll be running distortion and other effects through it, and I play a 7 string bass so there's quite a lot of highs going on, but I also don't want it to lose all the lows and make it sound tinny like some mics seem to do to the signal.
Actually sound guys will love you. Wish I had met more forward thinking musos!! Using DI from a bass rig is sometimes inconsistent and it is shame a lot of musos just see a mic as a back up. If the desk has enough spare channels, ask the soundman to both DI and mic. That way you can EQ the channels differently and decide what you want to put out front.

Shure SM57 is fine for most instruments but go for the Shure pg52. Specifically designed for the kick drum and low sub levels of a bass stack. Just remember that one of the issues of using a mic on your rig as opposed to using DI is the potential for picking up rumble from the floor if you are on a small stage as well as other ''chatter'' from instruments around you. Other benefits though are the ability to alter the sound you are sending to the desk just through mic position ie where it is positioned relative to the speaker cone.

Have fun with it and never be shy in telling the soundman what you would like !!

  13.
Sure... once you send me an email address ;)

You forgot to put it in your PM.

    Mark
sorry, had a brain f*rt......pm sent

    thanks

  14.
That's exactly the point. They themselves are just exercises, albeit musical ones. The point is they cover an aspect of playing the bass that is not typically covered by most parts written for a bass. They involve rapid and intermittent string skipping, use linear playing, together with raking, requires precise and accurate shifting, works out different fingers and different fingering permutations for each position, helps with efficient finger rolling/barring, and makes you work hard at efficient muting... I don't think I need to go on. If you already have that covered, fair enough. They are, at the end of the day, just a means to an end.

If you don't experiment with them you're missing the point. They are simple, they're not songs, not rhythmically interesting at all. Most bassists will be able to handle them up to maybe 16ths at 100-120bpm. But making them sound clean, with good tone, no ringing strings or duff notes at 150, 180, 200, and beyond isn't great. Part of the difficulty in developing good chops is not knowing where to start, not knowing what will definitely get you said chops, and not being efficient with your practice time and your method of practice. Hanon will answer the first two questions, and the bumf I put in the email will help address the third.

    Mark

P.S. I used them in my exercise routine a few years ago, now I use them as warmup to get up to speed quickly. Metronome goes up by 10-30bpm each time, and on each 'round' I use Hanon, chromatic exercise, four finger chromatics, and 9th arpeggios. 15-30 minutes on that and I'm warmed up and up to speed.
pm sent - can I get them please??

  15.
Linked to my previous post about getting a Ric 4004....

Has anyone had any experience of importing from the USA? I'm looking at used/nearly new.

My concern is the customs charges - how they are calculated, and so on.

Any thoughts or experiences on this would be great, I'm a bit worried that I might get stung!
what Bremen said is quite correct:

    import duty at 4%
    carriage approx £150
vat at 15% on cost of goods + duty + carriage - and it doesn't matter if it is new or second hand
UK carrier fee for duty collection at approx £15

but a few other things as well:

    - NEVER be tempted to ask a the supplier to undervalue your gear - Customs will know the estimated value and will hammer you if caught.

    - If it is through a US shop, get their bank account details and use your bank to transfer the cash. Only cost me £15 for currency exchange and money transfer and it took 48 hours to effect. More importantly, you are covered by the bank and your card details are not exposed.

I should add that for my import it took three days to come from the Mississippi to the UK but two weeks to clear Customs and get it from the Parcel Force in Newcastle......................

Hope you get what you want...........

  16.
Thanks for the advice everyone.
Personally, as I am going to have to chip in.. (which I still don't see as right, like did I get some band financial assistance when upgrade my amp??) I want low cost so used is the way I think we'll have to go.
And yeah, how come they hold their prices so well?
It's my thread Stewart has given you the link to (so thanks mate!!)

Mackie are pretty expensive to start with and would cost you around £800 for a pair of SRM350 like the ones I have advertised. They are actually 300w PA tops but lend themselves to being compact monitors.

Check them out with Hellrazor who has left feedback for me after collecting a pair from me this week.

As for you contributing to foldback? Well that is life as a band member I'm afraid........... ;)
