  1. Well I ended up selling the elf and cab and got a fender rumble 500. Will do me better in the longer term. Worked out around the same cost as just getting another cab, and I'm not sure the elf would've cut it long term, or the cabs be any good with more powerful heads.

    Thanks for the advice. :)

This is in danger of turning into handbags at dawn.

Fwiw, I think focussing on cabs is incorrect here. The OP is likely (imho, of course) to find the limiting factor is the head  Nothing wrong with a TE Elf - it's a micro amp, designed for practice/smaller jobs and it will handle that fine. However, it's power is limited - quoted max is 200w into 4 ohms.

Given that he says his existing 1x10 cab will handle 300w,  his Elf will likely run out of steam if he adds another. In his shoes and assuming I liked the sound the existing cab makes, I'd get another cab and a more powerful head. Should be doable for £600 odd (Elf is £200ish new, so assume roughly £100 from selling it) if he buys a used head. I tend to stick with new cabs as you don't know whether used ones have been abused, but that's just me.

I currently have a GK MB2 500 second hand, 14 days to return if it doesn't work out. Do you think adding another TE 1x10 would fix the distortion at lower frequencies?

  3. Thanks for the advice everyone.

I went into the local music shop and tried out a fender rumble 200 since they didn't have the 500 available to demo. Sounds nice so that's definitely an option.

I also took away a GK MB500 to try with my elf 1x10 cab at home. The sound was nice, probably preferable to the elf, but it had big distortion issues on the low b string with my cab which isn't present with the elf. I take it this is more of a cab issue than an amp issue? Would this be rectified with adding another 1x10?

  4. Hello!

I'm a noob when it comes to bass gear and what's required for smallish pub gigs. I gigged once before at a larger venue with an Ashdown mag 300w 2x10 combo and it was fine, but waaaaay to heavy for me to be lugging around myself, so I moved on.

Since gigs haven't been a thing for the past year or so, I got a trace elliot elf and matching 1x10 speaker. Works perfectly for band practice (covers band, 1 electric guitar, 1 acoustic, 1 e drums, and bass), but now we're venturing into the gigging world again I'm not sure my current rig will cut it.

I was toying with the idea of getting another 1x10 speaker to bring the amp up to 200w at 4ohms, but then I read about how it is fine to get an amp with greater power output than the speaker as long as you're careful with the volume? The 1x10 elf speaker I currently have is 300w, so not sure if getting a 300w or greater amp would be a better option?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!! Gigs start in a couple of weeks, and don't want to break the bank on new gear, maybe up to £500.

  5. Hey

I just received my new custom pickguard though the post today from Alperious Custom Pickguards based in Turkey.

The design was done by Alper in direct consultation with me, with a few personalised touches including the Scottish rampant lion! Communication was stellar throughout and always kept up to date through the process which took about 3 weeks in total from first communication to delivery.

As you can see his designs and execution are top notch, and the quality of materials used is excellent. Gives my Maruszczyk a nice celtic facelift.

If you want to customise your bass or guitar, I would highly recommend checking Alper out. He's done work for some big names as well and you can see plenty of images of designs he's done for all different models of basses on his website: https://www.alperious.com/

I'm not affiliated in any way to him, just so chuffed with the result I wanted to make people aware !!

I just got this Sandberg two days ago... Absolutely loving it! The darkglass pre and the pickups tick all my Stingray and Jazz needs and more...!

Worth considering, I used to have a VM5 and this one is definitely a different beast...!

Hey! I think we spoke on Facebook about your Alpher Mako. I am interested in Sandberg's especially this TM series you got, but I opted for a Maruszczyk and will probably bite at a dingwall in the not too distant future. I'm sure I'll get to Sandberg's eventually :P

Ever considered a fretless? Hours of enjoyment of a Mwah different kind. Although I’m not personally fond of them a Warwick would be good and familiar as you already have one.

Thanks for the recommendation! I've tried a fretless before and didn't get on with it. I'm not a massive fan of the sound either.

On a different tack - ever tried a Dingwall? You’re in the range for an Afterburner, which would probably suit your prog and rock stuff quite nicely.

Thanks for the recommendation, been looking into Dingwalls and I'm very interested!

If you haven't got Rickenbacker and you're into Rush, then there's sort-of an answer there.

I've got a couple of Warwick Corvette 5-strings (the bolt-on neck versions); they are really good, so a more up-market thru-neck one should be great. (Of course, the Spector folks would "tut" loudly at you.)

I played a couple of Sandbergs on their stand at the Brum show and they were rather nice, if you want a Fender-a-like...

It would even be possible to get a Ric and a Warwick with your budget...

As corollary (though they're not for sale), any of the right four of these Rics plus all but one of these 5-strings would be.

So, there's stuff out there if you keep your eyes open and are patient.

I have played ricks before and they sound and play nice, but I'm not a huge fan of the look. Maybe I'll have another go.

I was thinking about another Warwick but as I've never played one other than my Corvette I'm not sure if the others are different enough? I have been offered a 90s streamer for £1k..

  10. Hello

I have an itch for a new bass but not really sure what I'm looking for, please help!

I currently have (in order of preference) Warwick Corvette, Ibanez SR1400, and my Sire V7 which I use for gigs.

I just sold an American Fender Jazz Select bass which sounded amazing but it just didn't feel as 'natural' for me to play as the Warwick and Ibanez. I think the frets being larger made it a bit clunky going between the necks, but I did really love the sound of the jazz...maybe I just needed to persevere with it more.. 😣

So now due to selling some gear I have around £1500 to play with. I've had a look and I'm quite interested in Sandberg CaliforniaTM series, but due to the current situation haven't been able to have a play on them so not sure what they're like to play.

I'd love to hear any recommendations for any other bass guitars you think I should take a look at. As I said I have a budget of £1500 max and would rather shop second hand. In my spare time I mostly play interesting rock (Rush) and funky stuff, and I play in a 70s-00s rock covers band.

    Thanks in advance!
