  1. Hi John I have been a member of bass chat for a while😄you got in touch with me recently about your v1 decals? so sorry they don't work on black backgrounds but tbh you do need metallic inks for black because of the transparency of the decals which they need to be, I hope you get your mod or renewed headstock sorted mate and sorry I could not help you more

    Regards Dave

Aka madasatadpole or taddy for short, ti's but a hobby the decals but i'm learning to play bass myself. And quite enjoying it😄👍

Thanks for the pics, the tuners & MIJ neckplate suggest it's from the same place as the basses in the other thread.

I don't think these basses were made by Fujigen. There are several reasons but primarily it's because of the neckplate style - Fgn did use these plates up to the end of 1975, which is probably why many people assume they're the manufacturer. However at that point they introduced a serial system, which appears to be factory-specific rather than customer related, in that it appears on Fgn products with a variety of different brands.

These basses, and many of the related instruments, are indisputably late 70s/early 80s, and there's documented evidence of that for many of them. So, no s/n means they're not Fujigen. The same neckplates appear on instruments from other factories (Kasuga Gakki & Moridaira both used them occasionally) which pretty much establishes they're a generic part from a 3rd party hardware manufacturer.

Would I be right if I guessed the bridge is chrome steel, but has brass saddles?

Spot on they are yes.. the bridge was badly coroded so i exchanged it but retained the brass saddles i have tuners on the way as one of the originals is slightly worn. Thanks for your comments and help. Nice one

What I will say is I have two squiers a classic vibe p bass and a vintage modified jazz and this thing is deeper low end and growls more high end it's really good. Confused how something I got for nothing blowing two guitars I paid decent money for out of the water.

They're not really common enough for me to have anything specific to contribute - tbh I don't know if it's even 100% confirmed that they are MIJ!

However there are often a few tells with MIJ stuff which can sometimes give pointers to date & factory of origin. Clear pics of hardware & any serials or other numbers on headstock/neckplate. Pickups & electronics might give a clue or two. No guarantees but it'd be interesting to get a look at this stuff.

Update - just did a bit of random Googling and found an MIJ-stamped Profile P & a Strat. This is both enlightening and a bit frustrating, because the features would make them part of a mystery which is being investigated here:

    https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/435147-does-anybody-know-what-bass-this-is/

If the Profile has the same plate & tuners, I'm confident it's from the same source.

Not the same? the profile neck has the truss rod adjusted from the bass of the neck and not the top as in that one! a feature that was common in builds early on I'm led to believe. I found a profile black magic bass that was part of that line of guitars and they too have adjustment from bottom ie slot for access in pickguard. Weird there is no real info it's a really nice solid guitar.

  5. Hi. Just got given one of these in a house clearance? Never heard of them? And I play bass. What is intriguing is the class of the guitar it has 79 wrote in the neck pocket and has a beautiful neck. The body has a few dinks but nothing serious however the bridge is rusty as are the volume and tone knobs. Just stripped it down to renovate but want to keep it as original as I can, any info on them would be appreciated.

Cool.  What caught my eye though was this:

i have always been decent at setting guitars up, fret leveling, sanding, intonation and generally straightening guitars out for people, i'm like i said just learning Bass and there's always stuff to do with a guitar? hence the tools :)

    cheers spondon.

Alright La!  Welcome to the forum from an Expatriate Scouser now living Down South.

Friendly bunch on here (even the Mancs! 😉) and you can learn a heck of a lot from all sorts of people.

Unfortunately, you will also develop bad habits about "needing" more/better gear from seeing what other people on here have....that's the trade-off I'm afraid.  Worth it though.

Oh and another Red on here can only be good.

Cheers Mango about needing more gear?:shok: just bought a set of 62 fender p base pups, a ibanez short scale  tbm 30

a blinkin boss rc3 loop foot pedal. loads of luthier stuff :) but on a brighter note thanks for your welcome, its good to be here, stay safe down there👍

Different brands of capacitor's will have little effect on your tone. A different value (say going from 0.047 to 0.022 will have a bigger impact). If you want a smoother tonal range you need a paper-in-oil (PIO) cap.

You bagged yourself a bargain with the tmb30, these are well regarded. Short scales are great, I have a short scale arriving today. With short scales you need a heavier guage of string than you'd have on a full scale as the tension of the strings are less. So if you like the E on full scale at say 100, on a short scale you'll need a 105 to get a similar tension.

Fellow Liverpool fan here, so happy to help. 😀

Well that's cool they come with 105s on so all good :) yes it was a bargain, first time I've been that lucky in a while! the only reason i chose it is because i was looking at a jaguar short scale, but it was really expensive and this ibanez popped up so i checked a few reviews and snatched it on the strength of those👍 i will post a pic when it comes either tomorrow or mon? it has been dispatched as have the fender vintage pups so gonna be busy setting up :) thanks for the info and taking time out to help, much appreciated.

I'm a little confused, it sounds like you want a clean/bright tone (strong high end) but thumpy (strong low end) at the same time. The fender vintage pickups will do the latter but not really the former.

Most people make the mistake of changing pickups when they want to change their tone or sound. Changing the type of strings you use will have a bigger impact, then different pickup. Steel roundwounds with the fender vintage pickup is you best choice for the sound you want as far as I understand.

I think the best pickup for you would be the Kent Armstrong vintage hot. Changing the pots from 250k to 500k will give a cleaner/brighter tone, but you will lose some of the thump. Likewise, if you change the cap from the stock 0.047 to a guitar 0.022 you'll again get a cleaner/brighter tone, but you will lose a lot of the thump.

yep i'm confused too i do want the low end thump, its just that someone mentioned changing the cap to an orange drop improves the range of the tone? i think listening to your explanation, i will just load the vintage pups when they come (still waiting) and see what happens

i don't really understand the electronic side of it? give me fret levelling adjustment and set up and i'm fine, :)

    thanks again hooky👍stay safe.

    p.s

just copped for a damaged ibanez tmb30 shortscale in black, brand new but a scratch on the back (retailer couldnt sell it? so for 70 quid i reckon its a bargain waiting for that delivery too :) always fancied a short scale as i used to play guitar :)

the write up and reviews on them are pretty decent, so excited to get my hands on one.

Fender pickups with be a direct fit, the wires will be black and white, make a note where each goes. You don't need to change the cap.

If you are not comfortable soldering the new pickup to the pots, there is an alternative method, where you can cut both wires between the old pickups and the pots. Then carefully expose the copper wire, do the same with the new pickups (don't cut this wire though!), twist the two black copper wires together, do the same with the white ones, then wrap electrical tape around the wires to protect the connection, and this will work to connect the new pickup to the pots, and everything should work fine.

What are you trying to achieve by changing the stock pickups with these new Fender vintage ones?

Sorry late getting back been in shed all day levelling frets with a beam on a guitar neck😶 the stock pickups sound a bit muffled tbh i have a squier jazz vm and a epi thunderbird that knocks spots off the p bass? regarding tone and the thump i would expect from the p bass? so i thought pick ups, i really like the p bass its a nicer guitar, easy to play, with a good action, i just cant get the sound out of it i want, its prob got 250k pots in it whilst the jazz will have 500ks in and i thought the fender pups might need to have the cap changed on the pots? i am a coded welder by trade, so should be able to solder the connections and thanks for taking the time to answer my post it really is appreciated👍 cheers hooky :)

Another Dave…but welcome anyway! My wife is sitting opposite me on the phone to her cousin in Wallasey right now. We would have been up there this weekend if this virus crap hadn't happened.

Hiya Dave i used to work on birkenhead waterfront at the side of Cammel lairds, so i know the wirral and surrounding areas quite well :) thanks for the welcome👍

  13. A question about my Epiphone t bird i changed to a hipshot super tone bridge and the reason i changed was the original 3 point bridge was pulling one of the studs that held it clean out of the bass? so i stripped the 3 point off and glued the ferrel back in using gorilla super glue, after leaving overnight i put the hipshot in and bolted it down, after restringing the bass i noticed the action was really high so i started adjusting until the saddles bottomed out and the action was still way too high? i couldn't believe it i thought the hipshot would solve my problem with high action? pretty expensive to be mucking around like this tbh not happy so i had two options mill some off the bottom of the bridge (didnt fancy) or shim the neck, i decided to shim the neck using business cards i released the neck and started with one card and it was better, but there was still no adjustment on the saddles so i installed another card and at last i had adjustment but i had to lift the saddles right up to set the action? after setting a nice action with no fret buzz, i tuned to concert and both posts suddenly pulled out of the guitar? why do these posts pull out? grrr, i love the sound of this guitar but i doubt i will ever have the pleasure of gigging it, with all this going on, can anybody explain where i went wrong?
