  1. My updated board centred around the Helix HX Stomp. Shamelessly stole the midi controller idea from someone on here who was selling a similar setup (apologies, I can't remember the name). Thought this was me done for a while but I've been having some minor issues with the Boss WL-50 (probably down to the 2 guitarists in the band subsequently buying the exact same bit of kit). So may upgrade that at some point.

  2. I had the exact same issue with the Truetone One Spot earth pin snapping off. GuitarGuitar sent me a replacement with no issues, but I never really trusted it after that and was always super cautious when using it. I ended up buying the Truetone CS6 as it fits on the underside of my pedalboard, it's been great, and as it has a standard kettle/IEC cable I've got no worries about the plug. But yeah, that's Truetone again which you understandably want to avoid!

Was that The Wild Hogs ?

Was talking with Alan and Pete and they said it was a great night on Fri too. They've been surprised how many folks are turning up at the Jan gigs as its normally a very quiet month for music venues.

Dreadnought is such a well organised venue. Alan and Douglas do a fantastic job with it and they're such nice guys in there from owner, manager, sound engineers to the bar and door staff. Just a great place to play. I always enjoy it in both bands. Got the Xmas Sat gig again for later this year with the Glam band.  That's a cracking night out.

Yeah that was us. Just the bands 5th gig, 4th since me and the singer joined. The Dreadnought have been good for us.

I'm pencilling in the glam bands Xmas gig, although hoping I can catch you before then. Got tickets for Maiden Scotland at the Dreadnought too in May, always a great night.

Played one of my fav venues The Dreadnought in Bathgate with Emergency Exit punk covers band.

Kick off was 8:30pm and went to get changed 10 mins before. Was only a handful of punters in so we thought we were about to play to our mates and more of a paid rehearsal than a gig but we decided we would just go for it big time.

We started our first set and within 10mins the place was busy and everyone was up bopping away to our punk classics.

At the break the sound guy came into changing room and asked if we were happy with sound which is always perfect at this venue. We mentioned it being a lot busier than we expected based on how many were in when we started our first song. He then told us that all the other bands start at 9pm and do 2off 45min sets while we start at 8:30pm and play until 11:30 with a 15 min break in middle. People tend to arrive just before 9pm for the bands so they are all rushing about to the bar when they hear the band have started. They get their money's worth from us. A few other punters said the same thing 2.5 hrs of pure punk. You don't get that anywhere else.

Few wee mistakes but nothing drastic. Not bad considering we've not played for 8 weeks. Turned out to be a great night and we made a tidy wee sum.

Booked again for later in the year too.

Manager told us that was a great turn out for a January gig as historically its dead in January after the Xmas and New Years gigs.

He was fair pleased with the turn out.

Happy Days. The punks are back in 2024. :laugh1:

Great stuff Dave, we played the Dreadnought on Friday night. When I went for a pee I saw the Emergency Exit poster and thought, where do I know that name from?...then where do I know that bassist from? Ah, it's Dave from Basschat! I would have liked to have come along to see you, but combo of post-gig knackeredness and daughters 19th birthday shenanigans put paid to any chance of it. Glad you got a good crowd. We expected a handful of folk, but was better than expected, although not overly busy. Enjoyed the gig though, sound engineer was great. It's a cracking place to play. If I was local I'd be seeing bands there every week.

Just to throw it out there (and I don’t know why I’m pushing my unsolicited advice around) but if you were to ever switch to the following wireless

https://www.nuxaudio.com/b8.html (which could be considered a downgrade given the great reviews I hear about the Shure but who knows)

It would allow you to run the Helix in the loop of the wireless and use the xlr out, there by making an even tidier more versatile setup.

    Anyway….. carry on

Why? Why did you have to show me this? Just as I was getting happy with my pedalboard setup and telling myself I don't need/want any new toys... :laugh1:

  6. Last gig of the year for us last night, supporting Too Late To Atone at The Monarch Bar in Dunfermline. Played a 45 min set, had a blast, cracking crowd. Headline band were superb and looked after us very well. I kept things super simple and skipped the pedalboard, just straight from bass to the amp & PA. Thoroughly enjoyable evening even if my post-set bevvies are having an adverse effect on my head today.

Checked this morning and bass is fine. Have to say its a fair size club with few different halls / rooms etc.

I trust you were a local to the area. ?

My wife's aunt was bar manageress back in 90's so we got the hall cheap for our wedding reception. My wife is originally from Newmains area too and used to work part time behind the bar in mid 80's.

    Dave

Yeah I'm from Carluke and most of my family are from (and still reside in) Wishaw & surrounding areas. I used to play for the Clydesdale Colts American football team and the player of the year do was always at Cambusnethan Miners. Pleased to hear its still going.

    Glad the bass is ok.

Last night was a new venue for us with our BLOCKBUSTARZ Xmas show and WOW what a fantastic night in Cambusnethan Miners Social Club in Wishaw. Its where we had our wedding reception in 1995. :hi:

A blast from the past for me! Had many a great night in there in the mid-90s. Hope your bass and gear is all ok, what a shame that idiot had to ruin a good night.

I have three presets of my own recipe which appear to be corrupted. Every time I try to select them the Helix Floor just freezes. Rebooting brings it back to life again and all the other presets work fine. When I try to select these presets in HX Edit same result. I'd like to delete them altogether but there doesn't seem to be any way of doing this. Right clicking in HX edit doesn't have an option to delete. Anyone any ideas on how I might do this?

Can you copy and paste another preset over the top of the corrupted ones?

  10. Second ever gig for the rock covers band I joined in March last night. At the Hive Nightclub in Edinburgh. Had an absolute blast, great wee venue, crowd got right into it pretty much from the start, plenty of signing, dancing and a bit of headbanging. Rig for those interested : Squier 40th Anniversary Precision (I love this thing, can't stop playing it, use it over my more expensive basses now) into Warwick Gnome I Pro 600 (via Helix HX Stomp) and Markbass New York 121 cab. Was DI'd from the amp and used IEMs to ensure I heard myself...it's loud up there. Has to be said, a good gig is great for the old mental health.

Could you not find which band played there last and message them for advice ?

I never like arriving at a venue I havnt checked out mostly to check the load in access and setup space.
Our band has a lot of PA gear ( old heavy tops and subs with a 1k power amp and desk

We never need to worry about our sound as we do it every gig

Yeah, I did ask some guys I know who played there recently. The bassist was DI'd but took his cab to hear himself on stage - not quite sure why a monitor wouldn't have sufficed, but then they are a 7 piece outfit with 4 guitarists. Four!

@grapefruitmoon my standard question when hearing problems that you describe is: does your amp have an effects loop? If so, connect Send and Return with a short signal cable and see if that helps. Problems with the normalizing contacts on these jacks are not uncommon especially if they are not used.

I'd heard about this before, likely on this very forum. The amp in questions doesn't have an effects loop, thanks for mentioning though, will bear in mind in the future (the new amp does have it).

  13. Hi all, thanks so much for the responses, much appreciated! With my thinking being pretty much exactly what @BassmanPaul says in the last post, me/the band should be suitably equipped, so I've gone ahead, bitten the bullet and ordered a new amp. No ideal financially but it makes sense in the long run. One less stress!

  14. Our 5 piece rock band has a gig in a couple of weeks at a venue we've not played before. We're trying to figure out what gear we need to bring - they've got a PA system. My problem is my amp head has been having power issues, got it back from repair last week but using it at rehearsal last night, it's still intermittently cutting out - so obvs no use for gigging. I was going to take the head and cab to ensure I can hear myself on stage (lead guitarist is very loud!). Ideally, if we had our own PA, I'd go ampless. I've got a setup for that, and recently purchased the Lekato wireless IEM system, which I've started to use at one of our rehearsal rooms which has a good PA. Question is, can I rock up and use that at the venue? Is that too risky? Would I be better biting the bullet and just getting a new amp head in time for the gig? Any other options - I was thinking of getting a lightweight powered speaker to use as a personal monitor, but I don't really know much about that side of things.

Plan for the band is to invest in a PA early next year, so the expense of a new head at this point might not be the best bet.
