1. Ok I'm coming over to my parents in Scotland end of next week i need to get rid of some stuff that i left there before i moved abroad.

I have one of these

Lift off Lid Mixer flight case

It's never been gigged, brand new and has the black hexaborad finish

I also have a 17" TFT flat screen touch screen monitor, it doesn't have the stand it's just the touch screen. I was using it with XP in conjuction with lighting control software. The screen uses serial connectors and comes with power cable.

The Case AND the touchscreen together are £80

The items are situated near Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland.
They can be picked up between 19.04 - 24.04 as i'm only there for that week.

Cash on pick up.

I also have a bunch of other stuff at stupid prices so if you fancy it, bring a bit of extra cash, and you might get a good bargin on other interesting stuff.

Any questions PM me

2. Preamp reffers to anything that happens to the signal before it gets amplified, so yes EQ is a Preamp. There are different configurations for preamp set ups. The most common are 2 and 3 band EQ's. Typically a 2 Band would consist of controls for Bass and controls For Treble. Your bass has a 3 Band EQ, controls for Bass , Mid and Treble.

It's hard to tell you what to do to get a good sound out of the preamp, it really depends on several factors, and there is no right or wrong way to set the controls.
Factors that you will have to take into consideration are , what kind of music are you playing? how are you playing (light touch? heavy touch? with a pick? slapping?) these are all very different ways of hitting the string and each produce their own natural tone, so you would have to set the preamp accordingly to your playing.

All i can suggest is just play around with the knobs and get to know your way around the controls and how to get different kinds of sounds from your bass.

3. Thanks for the crits, will make some ammendments tomorrow if i get time.

I'm not sure about which luthier to have build it yet, i really like the work of the french luthier Laurent Kah.
But it will mostly come down to which good luthier will offer me the best price.

I'm really thinking of changing the buckeye to flamed maple, i think the wenge nech/fingerboard looks better (IMO) with the flamed maple. Buckeye looks better with a maple fingerboard.

4. So, i'm wanting my own custom made singlecut bass made this year. So today i sat down and scanned my drawing into photoshop and started the process of making a render to get a better idea of what the beast might look like once made.

The spec so far:

5 string E-C (although this may go up to a 6 string, aint decided yet!)
33" scale, 24 frets
Buckeye burl top and headstock and pick up covers (this may change to Flamed maple)
Alder and walnut body (pos. chambered)
Bolt-On wenge neck and fingerboard
Custom M.O.P bass clef Inlays @ 12th and 5th frets
Ebony Ramp with M.O.P Bass Clef inlay.

Aguilar OPB 3 preamp
Hipshot single string bridges (Gold)
Hipshout tuners (gold)
Pickups - not sure yet pos. Bartolini or Nortstrands

W.I.P render

Let me know what you think!
Suggestions , comments and crit all welcome!

5. Thanks for all the ideas guys n gals.

I'm really liking the look of this one from Laurent Kah

Singlecut 5 string

It's almost what i'm looking for, but with a slightly different combination of woods, although i do want a bookmatched flamed maple top.

The price i stated is just a rough guide, i'd stretch to maybe 1500-1600€, But once i have my design finalised i'll shop around for the best quote.

I'm really going for a sort of Micheal Tobias approach to the bass and that is to have the electronics of the bass quite transparent and allot the natural sound of the woods of the bass to give me my tone.

More suggestions and ideas are more than welcome!

6. Ok i'm downsizing my amp, and really fancy going for a Superfly (500w @ 4 Ohms). Cab wise im using a PJB 4B cab (8 ohms) , and i plan on buying another one of these cabs soon.

I've noticed that the Superfly has 2 speakon outputs, one for each internal power amp. what i'm wondering is, if i run each cab from each output will i get the the full 500W capability of the amp? or will it be less, as each output is going into an 8 Ohm cab?

Also if i use only one 8 ohm cab (not all gigs will require the 2 cabs) from one output, how much power will i get?

Any help appreciated.

I like them, very punchy. I tried the briefcase and the suitcase at a music store last year and was just amazed an the sound you get from the five inch drivers.

I more like the fact that they are tiny little things and pretty light (18Kg) compared to other cabs, i've never been a fan of lugging around huge cabs.

I'll post up a review of the 4B once i try it with my Warwick head.

8. I own one of the Westfield VBS5a's (or Warwick look a likes). The issue i had with it in the begining was to with the strings. It came strung with a wierd set of strings, with a very light "low B". And thus this was causing loads of fret buzz. I chucked them and stuck a set of Medium Warwick Yellow Labels on it, did a good proper set up and it plays just fine. The only 2 issues i can put against the bass are, the rear strap button is too high up and gives you major neck dive. And the pickups are quite weak.

Apart from that its doing me just fine. and is my gigging bass.

9. I use one of these

EARWIG

Great little device, great company, fast shipping.

I know a few people who have the VOX and they all say the same thing, that it eats through batteries.

My Earwing runs off a single 9v battery i've had the same one in for 2 months now and i use mine for at least an hour a day.

10. I'm doing a cover of Peggy Lee's 'Fever' in a couple of weeks during a gig and i'd like to try and recreate as best i can, a double bass sound using my B2. Anyone got such an effect that they can post the settings for , or give me any ideas on a good way to get the effect from the pedal?

11. Hi all,

I'm looking for a PJB Piranha 4b cab and wondered if anyone knows of places doing the best prices for it?

The best price if found was the bass centre in London, who will do it for £320 (approx 338€) shipped to Finland (where i am)

Does anyone know of any other places that might be cheaper?

12. Thanks for the replies guys.

Rondo Music in the States ship them to Europe , pretty much anywhere. The price of the bass, plus shipping, plus customs (if it gets caught) is only around €200 , still a bargin.

If anyone is looking for an SX it's worth your time to get in contact with Kurt at Rondo, fast, helpful replies to all questions.

I went to a couple of the local music shops where i am in Finland. They said they could get the bass , but it sould be a "special shipment of " and " an order of a specialist bass" i was quoted the price of around €350..... :)

It's crazy some of the prices in Europe.

13. Ok i have my heart set on an SX JB75CT NAT. I'm in Finland, and nowhere here sells SX basses. Rondo music in the USA wont ship to Finland. Does anyone know anywhere in Europe that sells them and would ship to Finland?

14.
I don't own one, but it was one of the basses on my list of potentials when I was. But none turned up during the appropriate time period. My son owns a 1/2 sized Westfield LP guitar, and as far as I can see it seems a competently made instrument. Apart from the horrors I saw when I took the cover off to look at the wiring.

I'd appreciate it if you'd review the instrument. What do you think of it?
It's really hard to find ANY information about these basses, even on the website there is virtually nothing.

Well its basically a kind of a cheap "thumb copy".
i paid £165 for it off ebay, and in a way i got what i paid for. its not a bad bass but its not really great either, its just kind of OK...

getting it set up the way i like was the hard part, and its still not perfect, and probably will never be.

There is a fair amount of neck dive on it, so i am going to more the rear strap button further down the body.

String spacing is about 16.5mm i reckon, its fine for me.

The major thing is there is a bad string buzz on the G string, around the 5th to 9th frets. i reckon at some point i will need a fret dress.I'm getting by at the moment with just adjust my attack on the string.

Im also going to replace the nut at some point as i think there is a fault with it, (see pic)

15. Hi All, first post here, just joined.

Im also a member of another bass forum (TalkBass) , and i had asked this question with little success.

Are there any owners (present or past) of a Westfield VBS5a or a VBS4a out there? I would like to hear peoples views on them.

I bought a VBS5a a month back now.

here's a pic...
