As of the start of the year, I'm a Spector owner again. I straightened the neck out because I like my necks pretty much bang on straight and dropped the saddle heights down.
I wound the Tonepump down to 50%, which I think is a must for any bass with that preamp and it sweetens the tone up so much. On the 100% setting as they come from the factory the gain output is just ridiculous. Even putting the input gain on my Markbass Ninja 1000 way down, it would still clip even when not playing particularly hard.
The eventual plan is to swap the pickups out for EMG X series and add an EMG premap with volume, pan and 3 band EQ just to give me more on board flexibility with the mid control. The EMGs in this might go in my Yamaha Attitude. The thing is, while I find the Tonepump to be a little fiddly to use compared to a 3 band, it just sounds so damn good once it's set right that I don't feel in a hurry to start changing parts.
Good to see you back playing a Spector, I'm still loving your old one!

That Ibby is really pretty. Now I have GAS for two things... What's even worse I could possibly afford this... In theory...
-
I know have GAS!!! Grr... I hate being poor...
That finish would be amazing for my band as well!!!
-
If this was fretted, I'd be all over this!!! Such a lovely bass!!!
-
I would highly recommend it - but the set up is NEEDED!!!
mine now sounds lovely and I don't think I'll need another DB... -
Thank you all very much for the kind responses. This was definitely a hard gig to play - pretty much sight reading all the electric bass tracks, not easy.
-
Well mine's brilliant, its got dominant strings on it and a really good set up. I'd say that is its best feature is the set up, make sure you get it done pprofessionally.
It got me into the Brighton Youth Big Band so I'm pleased... -
My bergantinos are amazing... Never had any issue with them, still the best cabs I've ever heard...
-
What key are you playing it in? It doesn't seem to be in the original key...
-
What's going on by Marvin Gaye or Bernadette by the Four Tops...
-
Indeed I can't make it...
It's a shame, but I hope everyone has fun and don't fall asleep in dad's lecture (hehe, I'm in trouble now) -
It doesn't feel like a db...just a really great Jazz bass! I'm a working musician so need my basses to be set up to play exactly as I ned them too. I'm sure if you put the action up super high and some tape wounds on it it'd be close!
The main thing about the bass is that it really nails the tone!
well the thing that matters is that it makes the right noise! looks fabulous!
Today I played Herbie Flower's 1959 Jazz Bass

Wow, 11 years later and people are still commenting on this thread about prototypes and whether the bass is a pre-production model or not, but very little about how Herb is a great guy...
I somewhat feel people missed my original point of wanting to show some graditude to a man who let me experience a piece of musical history for the better part of a week, with no conditions or rules - just have a laugh playing this bass and let me know what you think.
If you want to discuss the finer points of the English language on prototypes - please head to off-topic and likewise if you want to discuss the exact pre-production status of this bass, make a thread about it. This thread was not for this purpose and it does sadden me to see something I was and still am proud of be veered off course back into slagging matches over stuff
