Me too,I have a 5 unit - great bit of kit. One thing , though , is you have to put the stand further away from the wall than you might plan to. If you don't ,the headstock's end up propped against the wall.

Tell you something too - there's not much I wouldn't give up to have WaterofTyne's Fender wall !!!!!

My fave has got to be the fretless Precision. Is that an ebony fingerboard on there?? Should you ever think of moving it on I'd be in the group marked 'sorely tempted' !!!

Trip down memory lane.

First bass I owned was a Hofner violin bass - bought in 1978 and it was getting on a bit then. Cost me £45 from a secondhand shop in Leeds. I sold it about 2 years later for £75.

Nice to see it and I hope you get round to getting it road ready again.

We used to play the Crimea regularly - in the end we felt they wanted a heavier band than us so we stopped doing it a couple of years ago.

Which - unless I'm very much mistaken , is the handiwork of the owner , John Robinson. He played it in his band - The Outfit - and I had a quick go on it.

I had a 6 string guitar (sort of) stolen and the rock factory got it back for me when a guy tried to sell it on there. Grateful bunny that I was I took them for a beer at a local hostelry after work. Then another beer , then another etc etc.

Woke up in the middle of the night , room spinning , couldn't quite work out why someone had moved my window but set off to the traps , pleasure bent. Somebody had moved my lightswitch too. Odd.
All of a sudden I've tripped on something in the dark and Neil Peart's doing drum solo. Toms,snare , cymbal crashes...the works.
The light goes on and it's John's wife. They'd scraped me up off the pub floor , taken me home ,put me to bed and in the dark I'd wandered out of their flat , into the drum department and fallen into a drum kit!!!

Arse - I just saw my Status with it's new Shukerised top floating past a kebeb shop in Doncaster high street surrounded by dead kittens and Richard the thirds!!!!

My boat's in South Yorkshire so I went yesterday fearing the worst but the canal and surrounding fields are unaffected. 2 miles away dozens of poor sods are kipping in a sports centre.

From your description of what you need I'd go Jazz too.

Generalising but - a P makes one good sound. A J makes all the rest except the P.

Like having a well stocked tool box. The screwdrivers,pliers,spanners are all useful - but sometimes you just need the hammer.

I have the compact 15. Very solid build and no nasty carpet covering.

Issue - always saying this - is that it's rear ported. Any rear ported cab won't suit all gigging situations. As a for instance we had an outdoor jobby yesterday . A fair proportion of your sound can just set off backwards into the ether. I solve it by shoving a handy table on end behind my rig. Not 100% but practical. Of course I'd like to use bigger ,more efficient , front ported cabs but sadly Ashdown don't supply a gorilla to lift them around for me or a free van to transport them.

Re the Ashdown good/bad debate. It seems to me it's very similar to the Ashdown ABM/MAG debate. MAG stuff is designed to be cheaper and of course won't have some of the attributes of the more expensive ABM range. Certainly you would look for better build quality in the ABMs.

Other than that , like any gear , it's down to opinion and preference.

Funny but I feel quite defensive of Ashdown. Never let me down once and, as a gigging player who doesn't always treat his rig as he should, that's issue no.1 for me.
I've managed to f*** up Trace,GK,Hartke and Eden cabs , but never an Ashdown.

Exactly my thoughts on GK - I had the 400RB combo and currently own the 400RB and 1001RB heads.

I always figured that if I don't swing too hard on the eq's to get a basic core sound that I'm happy with then it must be the amp for me. These are terrific combo's and well done to whoever buys it.

Well , I played OBBM's blue LED equipped bass in his dressing room and they seemed to work very well.

I chose red ones for my shuker - probably because I associate LED's with being red!! An unexpected bonus was that - at outdoor summer gigs - I can see them clearly with the sun in my face. I can't speak for other colours in that dept.

I think any colour would be better than none and pobably down to personal preference. Shame you're based in the land of the stump - you're welcome to try mine.

You didn't - by any chance - spot a headless Status with a new top that looked remarkably close to being finished while you were at Jons did you?

Dr Blue play in standard tuning but we drop to Eflat for Eliminator , purely for easier singing purposes.

I keep my Status tuned down to D and use it for Dr Blue stuff in D or G. I find the low D note useful for these keys and I never quite got my head round flappy 5's. The concept of a middle string puts me off and I lose it when I have to go onto auto pilot when singing.

I use a korg - but was impressed with the facilities of the behringer. I think it's a good Q re. it's longer term reliability and would be interested in follow up.

I never considered the Behringer cheap - more like the former alternatives too expensive. If the Behringer does good long term business I'll have one , be glad of the rack light , and flog the korg for more than I'll pay for the new behringer.

Ha! My own beard is toothbrush short at the mo - we have to shave them off to stick the false ones on with gum. The gum stays on your shaven chin for a few days and won't come off making you look like you've been pleasuring a pikeys granny!!

The Shuker - The body is African walnut with a 'rotten' maple top - ie. a bit if maple that was rotting!! The neck is 3 pieces of maple with 2 bits of walnut sandwiched inbetween. The headstock facing is regular maple stained to look like the 'rotten' top, there wasn't enough left to use the same bit. The fingerboard is resin.
It has red side LEDs on a seperate 9v battery , they switch on via the vol pot which is push/pull.
The pup is a Bart 'MM' style. Under the vol the knob that looks like another pot is a 3 way rotary switch putting the Bart out of phase or going single coil.
The 3 band eq is one of Jon's own all powered by an 18v system.

When the Status comes back it will look similar enough to the Shuker to be a cousin but not twins!!

The Precision was 5 years old when I bought it in 1978 for £150 , which took more finding then than the £2k it would probably cost to replace it now. Not that it's worth that as it's not all original. Doesn't concern me a jot - I just wanted a better bass and I'd starve before I sold it anyway.
It has a Badass2 (the saddle screws in the original collapsed) , SD 1/4 pounder pup (the original just stopped working one day) ,Schaller M3 machines (originals kept vibrating loose) and a second string guide to avoid flappy 'A' syndrome. I figured that when I had to replace something I may as well buy the best - or what I considered to be the best - that I could. So I did.
The pickguard is non-original , I cut the original into a weird shape because I'm thick as a whale omelette , and the knobs are only a few weeks old. I got £40 for the pitted,scratched and worn originals and the new ones were a fiver!!

I have Dunlop strap locks on all my basses because Schallers dropped a Status on my foot and made me look a twat before the good citizens of York!!

....are these two - the Status is up on blocks being Shukerised at the mo.

'73' P with loads of new trimmings and Shuker Bolt-on Custom.
