1.
You could just sand the name off? There are quite a few people here with re-bagded Fender copies of various types...
it's as much about it being something expensive and precious for myself as it is about looking good infront of other people.

  2.
If that's what's bothering you, spend a tenner on some fake "Fender" decals. (eg http://www.axesrus.com/decals.htm) Sorted. Then you've still got £490 to spend on crack and whores. (OMG I've been reading too many of BBC's posts)
hmm must say i do love crack and whores.
Just to throw another option into the mix - buy sensibly secondhand.
may well be doing that now.
My top tip (for your money) would be either a Japanese Jazz or Japanese Precision.
there's probably about a 50% chance of this happening

  3.
Dr D's fave mantra - buy the bass that feels right in your hands - anything else can be sorted with a screwdriver , a soldering iron and a spray gun.

Sod Aesthetics (as long as it doesn't compromise playability) and definitely Sod the name on the headstock!
as much as i try i just can't ignore the name on the headstock lol. lets face it. half of the reason for buying this bass is so that i dont have to wear something that says 'squire' on it around my neck

  4. Went to the gallery this evening. The guy was more friendly, he even let me play a stingray when I made it pretty clear I wasn't goin got be buying it from him. He said he doesn't really have much in my price range(approx. £500), apart from a couple of fenders.

So I wasn't really able to play play play as you've all recommended. I liked the stingray though, will have a look around for some second hand ones.

  5.
Who on earth suggested the bass cellar? Don't go there!

Also, go on your own, that way you can take as long as you like trying stuff out without your mate pratting around because he's bored or something.
riiight ok. what if theres a bass i wanna try out that they only have there??

and i will go with my mate cos i need his advice man

  6.
That absolutely amazes me. I haven't seen one instance of that in the twelve years I've been going there. Although you might be better not dragging too many mates along wherever you go....
ok well i'm going back there tomorrow with just one mate. anyone got any other suggestions of places in london to visit, other than the bass cellar and bass gallery?

  7.
I see you're in London. Go to The Gallery. You might not be able to afford much in there but it will give you an idea of what to be aiming for.
yeah i went to the gallery. very unfriendly lol. guess he didn't like a 16 year old coming in with 2 of his mates!

  8. So I'm going to buy a my first 'proper' bass after christmas. I believe I'm doing the right thing in doing loads of research on loads of different wesites, visiting shops and playing basses and perhaps buying second hand.

But the more research I do, the more unsure of what to buy I get!!!

So my question is, how do you decide on the purchase thats going to mean so much to you, when you're so scared you could get it totally wrong!!!
