IMO a good bass player is one who makes the bass look cool enough for non-players to want to take it up.  That may sound facile but when I was young it was never  jazz fusion virtuosos that made me wanna play bass but JJ Burnel. JJ made bass playing look cool. For me noodly fusion players made it look as hip as the oboe. Just my view you understand.

I agree with this, especially the jazz fusion virtuosos bit!

  2. Just looking for opinions on this not for a list of the greatest. I've only been playing for 3 years, am self taught & have recorded 2 albums, played lots of gigs including large festivals. Admittedly the stuff I play is simple, it's Oi!/punk music, yet I'm happy with my skill levels. I've watched the 'greats' & am impressed but the guys I look up to play heavier stuff, Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, John Paul Jones etc. One of the best, in my humble opinion, is a guy called Irish Rob from the Exploited, fast & furious music but more than just the dum-dum-dum-dum I play. So in others opinions what makes a good bassist?

Now that`s a coincidence, my previous faves were Rotosound steel rounds. Tone-wise really not much in it at all, when completely new maybe the Rotos were a tad brighter, but as us long-term Roto users know that doesn`t hang around for long at all. Under the fingers the Warwicks are slightly coarser than the Rotos if that can be believed, took a couple of weeks for my fingertips on my fretting hand to get used to them. But it`s the life of them, I used to get 3, maybe 4 weeks out of a set of Rotos as I need the fresh twangy sound, whereas the Warwicks are lasting me about 2 months, and this has been through the summer with the hot weather and sweaty gigs that come with it. They`re really good for the punk/Oi type material, get a nice twangy grind from them, like I say not much different to Rotos really.

Cheers for that. Fully agree about how quick Rotos fade, I tend to get 1 gig & a few rehearsals out of a set. I will give these a try, although if they are coarser I better get ready for bloody finger tips.

Warwick Red Label steel rounds. Sound great and if I buy 5 or 6 sets at a time work out to less than a tenner a set including delivery. And they last about twice as long as my previous faves.

As we play the same style of music & similar types of bass I really appreciate your input. I've seen you comment on these strings before & just wondered what your previous faves were? I'm currently favouring Rotosound Roto Bass & wondered how the 2 compare?

Cheers mate, it was a great gig and likewise they`re one of my fave bands - Lars couldn't make it so Beefy was on guitar and he looked like he thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yeah I was chatting with Lars & he said he couldn't make it but is here now to record a new album. Chatting with Beefy he is really missing it & may make a return, who knows they may become a 5 piece 😉

  6. I've said it before V4s are great basses & as stated not just for the money they stand on their own as great basses. I have 3, here's 2 of them, a slightly customised Tony Butler sig model & the new model in Firenza Red. The other being a sunburst model. Can't beat them in my opinion.

Last band I went to see was The Last Resort in Bedford a couple of weeks back. And very nicely too we are playing on the same bill as them this Saturday, at The Fleece in Bristol,

My favourite band & I've had the pleasure of sharing the bill with them & becoming mates with them. Saturdays gig is a great line up, hope it goes well mate.

Written (ok, typed) set-lists are a must, we often have people asking for them. Wouldn`t do to be giving tablets away.

Agreed, we always end up giving set lists away & certainly can't afford to buy an ipad let alone give them away.

  9. A bit late on this topic, so sorry, you mention the Vintage V4. Personally I love them & having bought one of the new models I've sold on my others including a Fender. For the price (I paid 200quid) I haven't found anything near it, in fact for 3 times the price I couldnt. If you like a slim neck look at the new models, if a big chunky neck is more your thing then check out the Tony Butler sig model.

This, kinda: I'm shamelessly shallow when it comes to looks, and went through a phase of thinking Ps were boring to look at (tho nowadays the only real GAS I have is for a Shuker JJB P), but I wish I'd worked out sooner that the sound I really like is a split coil pickup in (or at least near to) the P position...that simplified the 'buying on looks and trying and being disappointed with the sound and then selling' of lots and lots of basses... 😕🙂

I did exactly the same, my 1st bass was a cheap Westfield P bass but I thought it looked crap so went through some weird & wonderful ones to arrive back at a P.

i did love my usa precision, but my vintage v4 reissue at a 5th of the price is just as good. if i was to ever get another it would be purely for vanity, sound wise theres nothing in it.

My exact feelings, I had a Fender P amongst my collection then picked up a V4 from a 2nd hand shop. The Fender has gone now, along with most of the others, my collection now being various models of the V4.

The Liquid Room, with Dirt Box Disco

Ah that should be a good one, the liquid rooms is a great venue & DBD tend to pull a good crowd. Unfortunately we're away playing a charity gig in Hartlepool or we'd be there. Have a good one mate.

No worries, it was a great Rebellion, one of the best imo, and very worthwhile band wise, hopefully get some good work from it.

It was mate, I completely agree. If you're ever looking for gigs up Scotland way let me know.

I missed you, we were on at 3:25 on Sun so was getting ready etc (as in fighting nerves and all that malarkey). Glad to hear the V4 held up, I`ve been really impressed with my Tony Butler V4.

I get the point about the nerves mate, although I was hungover as hell when we went on. I like my Butler one too I just prefer the slimmer neck on mine. Sorry I didn't catch you I was running a stall most of the day.

They certainly have a great rep both here and elsewhere. I really like the look of the white one with the maple neck, albeit an earlier model. For around £250 it must surely be a bargain. GAS!

Well worth it for that price, there was a newer model the same as mine on ebay recently for 200quid.
