    My apologies

don’t sweat it, if you can afford it and it brings you joy there’s far worse things to spend money on, and better gear can often be sold if you ever did find that it didn’t bring you joy or you needed the money.

Yes actually I have a US jazz bass that I bought second hand that amazingly might be worth the same or more than when I bought it.

Better than some of my other hobbies.....!!

Also practicing and theory doesn't generate as much chat as talking about capitalism's endless production of 'stuff'.
So it's self selecting, the people on a forum where people talk about bass gear are more likely to be interested in bass gear than others.

But I think the OP was trying to make an ethical distinction to suggest their own approach was morally better than anyone else's.

I definitely wasn't trying to say I am better than anyone else! I was implying I am worse.... Gear much better than my ability....!

Of course. I learned early on (12 years ago) that I would be a rubbish bass player.  So I focused on what I was good at and enjoyed - packing, sending and receiving cardboard boxes and selling gear at a loss.  I could probably be as happy just sending myself empty boxes to open.

Love this. I was discussing with a friend  getting deliveries from the daily Amazon driver that comes round and he suggested putting some kitchen roll on their subscription service so once a month you get a surprise delivery!!

Not great for the environment though so I haven't done that but great minds seem to think alike!!

  6. Love to hear any stories of people getting good at an older age..

I playe trumpet to a good standard up to 20. Grade 6. Failed grade 8 due to being more interested in girls and beer. Was the worst player in a good quality Orchestra at university.

Now grade 5 bass. Mediocre. But interested in getting better. Anyone done it later in life??

  7. So tell me what the ethics are on being interested in beautiful bass gear when just an intermediate player.

Obviously I could be an amazing player on a £300 squire bass.

But is there such a thing as a bass hobby that doesn't have to do with skill??

  8. Free to a good home (had to put a price in of £1! but ignore it!). I will pay postage if you send a tenner to the Turkey earthquake appeal: https://www.dec.org.uk/appeal/turkey-syria-earthquake-appeal

After I bought the other Fender one that wasn't right I bought this off a guy who does them on Ebay. Fits a US P Bass with no notch. Fits nicely. Nice black strip round. Trouble is its a bit of a garish colour, not like the original one! So in the end I gave up and went black!

    Your ultimate practice system is:

    iPad with anytune pro+
    Darkglass Elements

…and that’s everything you need except your bass, headphones and a cable. (Obviously)

the iPad connects via Bluetooth to your iPad to play your tunes through.

and the Darkglass Elements has two separate inputs.

It has different sounds built in, two headphone outputs, and besides the regular ‘through’ output, it has a line-level DI output too so you could use it directly into a PA system!

    OK I am depressed......

Bought a Jam+ but various issues with my ultimate ipad practice setup.

    a) I think the cable that came to connect to ipad (lightning) is bust. Apogee support think it is. I have bought a cheapy one to see if that works. It didnt work originally. Then it worked. Now it doesn't.

    b) It turns out that you really need all apps on the ipad to be Audiobus compatible. I bought AU3. Then my supermetronome volume doesnt work.... I cant find another drum machine i like. (and anyway the jam+ isn't working on my ipad anyway.)

    c) The jam+ works on my mac but garageband is crap for making simple drum rythms!

    Ughhhhh

I dont like practicing with my stomp. The volume mix etc is a pain. I don't get on with fiddling with it. TBH I do tech all day. I just want to plug in and play.

The Darkglass looks great.... Maybe I will order and get the stomp on ebay! And return the jam+!

It sounds like you’re more or less sorted but I was going to suggest the Nu-X mighty plug as a low cost, small and light device to practice with. The accompanying app for your phone/iPad streams any backing track via Bluetooth and it also has drum loops and effects built in.

If you’re now looking for drum loops to play along with, take a look at the SBL Groove Trainer. It’s a free app with loads of great sounding drum loops, a metronome and tuner.

    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/sbl-groove-trainer/id1571452765

    Great thanks. Will do.

Are you wanting to record the bass along with the backing track or just play along with the backing track for practice purposes?

    Just listen!

But anyway some progress and info for anyone else searching.

Bought Apogee Jam +. Arrived. Plugged in. Nothing happened!! Thought it didn't work. Didn't appear in Audiobus inputs. Tried to connect with garageband. Still blue light.

Restarted ipad. Tried again. Sprang into life. Green light. Weird.....

Anyway now it appears in the Audiobus list of inputs. Can use without Garageband for input it seems. So that is good. Sounds fine to me in my AKG K702s.

Next issue..... SuperMetronome isn't Audiobus compatible I think so I cant control the volume in Audiobus. Need a new drum machine.

Anytune works fine. Though hasn't been update to ios 15 etc so have to allow network permissions manually. But that is fine.

I can go in Anytune to control playback and then just switch to Audiobus app to adjust levels so it's actually great.

I think if I can sort the drum machine I like this setup better than my HX stomp for practice. Less wires. No power lead required at all! Works of fully charged ipad and I have a camera adapter somewhere if I want to charge.

Any recommendations for up to date simple drum machines?

  13. Hi,

Just back to practicing after pandemic. I usually use my HX stomp to practice but actually its irritating me! Also I will travel soon and want something zero size to take with me.

I use my ipad at the moment for either mp3 backing tracks with an ipad app called Anytune Pro so I can slow them down. Alternatively I use SuperMetronome as a drum machine.

I understand if I get an audio interface like an iRig (which one?!!) it will work as an audio interface. So bass and headphones plugged into that and away I go......

Except. How do I mix 2 sources without a complex daw etc. I basically want to use an app on the ipad and mix in the live bass.

Hmmm audio mixer on the ipad? AUM??

Can the ipad multitask??!! Seems so just ran supermetronome and model d app at the same time but don't see how to control the level between the 2.

    I do tech all day.

Want something really simple when i practice. Maybe i shoul dbuy a secondhand Bass Buddy off ebay!

    Cheers

    Rob

I'm really wary of antidepressants... I have seen friends ruined by them in the past. Heavily.

But I probably should seek help :( Maybe even just a therapist would be of help, because there's really nobody I can talk to.

I try to. Actually that's what it is. I have no ambitions whatsoever. There is no one I care to impress anymore. Maybe that's not much a positive thing tho.

    Only after:

No alcohol, not much caffeine, exercise (walking if nothing else), meditation.

    Have you meditated?

Together they are a monster rig.  Huge sounding, with deep lows and higher frequencies than I can hear with my industrial deafness and almost 50 years playing music.  :)  Two cabs somehow sound better than one - to my ears anyway.

The three rigs idea works a charm for me.  I wouldn't rule out a Super Midget for quite big gigs either.  Sometimes I use mine in larger pubs and it copes very well.  You miss the lows of the BB2 of course, but the SM gets the job done easily enough on its own.

It's a bit more expensive to buy two 1x12 cabs rather than a single 2x12 but honestly, the flexibility is worth the cost to me.  For most gigs, I need only one cab.  Having two means I can cover any gig if required.

    Frank.

Thanks. Sounds great. Will get saving.....

Haha.  I'm glad you didn't like it because I still have it and still love it, over three years later. :)

I added a Super Midget but rarely need them both.

But it does show that we all have different tastes and requirements from our gear.

    Frank.

How do you find the BB2 and SM together? I have a BB2 but would really like a minimal rig of a SM and small head for practices etc. Then maybe combined for fun at bigger events. Ie 3 different sized rigs.

I put this together a few years ago on the cheap, there was a thread on here about the build, it's changed a bit since then but it still works out a cheap bass. Body was off ebay I got for £30, flamed maple jazz neck was £75 off ebay, tuners were £20 off here, Wizard 84's £50 off here, East J-retro £110, Hipshot bridge was £27 off ebay. It's my longest serving bass and plays and sounds superb, I've got 2 keepers, this and my Alpher.

Active in a Precision, get a P-Retro (used as discontinued). But passive is also pretty versatile if done well, speak to John/Kiogon about versatile passive circuits, he's just built me one for a P/J bas that does pretty much everything I need from a bass.

Wood? You can pick up Warmoth and Allparts bodies and necks for £100-£150 if you keep your eyes open :)

I'm getting the feeling I've got most of the parts you might need!

What about a squire vm body to start...?

The other skill is realising when you've got there, and not selling it on to find something better 😢 Edit - that's what you said.  I am a dimwit.

I had a beauty - MIJ P bass body, lots of mojo, light as a feather.  Mighty Mite maple Jazz neck, Wizard Trad pup, P retro, Hipshot tuners, Hipshot A style bridge.

That sounds like the spec i want!
