  1. Have been researching compressors and narrowed it down to the MXR and the markbass compressore. Interested in your opinions. Particularly if anyone has had experience of both. I’ve tried them but only in a limited ‘quiet’ environment. Thanks.

  2. I bought an American pro jazz about 18 months ago and was disappointed with the sound. However at a jam night recently I lent it to a mate for a song or two and in a band setting it sounded awesome! Since I bought it a number of people have commented on the great sound it makes and I thought they were mad but I began to realise that maybe I was looking for that magic tone that doesn’t really exist. Sometimes what we hear close to the amp is different from the sound ‘out front’

  3. Thanks Graham. Sounds like good advice. I've had more of a chance to play it and can see that it isn't as tricky as I thought. I'm now worried about going back to the 4 string for the next few gigs whilst playing the 5 exclusively chez moi. 1st world problems eh!

  4. Finally took the plunge and bought a five string. Always wanted to try a Warwick and really impressed with the quality (particularly at under half the price of a new one!). Beautiful coloured and oiled finish on nicely grained wood and very versatile electronics. I was worried about the neck profile - particularly on a 5 string but this is perfect -strangely almost flat at the back.

Just need to get used to that pesky low B string now!

  5. Had a bit of a hiatus from playing! Funnily enough was taking pics of my old Aria pro II earlier and realised that the bass centre sticker on that still has an 01 code!

Ended up getting a strap from the site naxos10 suggested. It's perfect! made to measure, top quality and turned round in 2 or 3 days.

  6. Hi from Essex. I started playing at 16 and was in bands in my 20s. Always kept a bass and finally got back into a band at 52 and wonder why it took so long!

Kit wise I started with a Hondo precision copy, on to a Westone thunder 1a then an aria pro II which I had defretted when I bought the Musicman Stingray in the late 80’s. Still have the aria and the Stingray (honeyburst with clear scratch plate and mute equipped bridge). More recently bought my first fender jazz - an American pro with cherry burst flame maple top. Amp was a peavey combo for years and then a Tc electronic bg250 210 which I’ve just replaced with a Markbass little mark III and 210 traveller.

Enjoyed lurking on the site so far but though it only polite to introduce myself

  7. Anyone got one? Are they worth it? I use an old bass centre strap from when the bass centre was in Wapping High street and it's getting tired. Ideally I'd like to get something made so its at the right length without adjustment but I've no idea if you can get such a thing. The Scott's bass lesson strap does look good but it's a lot of dosh for a bit of (ok few bits of) leather. Any thoughts?

  8. I bought a flamed maple top one with rosewood fingerboard tail end of last year. It’s a beautifully made instrument. The neck seems super comfortable and fast compared to the stingray I’ve played for the lat 25 years. Sounds gorgeous but it’s the first j bass I’ve played so nothing to compare it to. I would say that the stingray has more sustain and will cut through any mix without trying. But I’m in a soul covers band now so wanted something a bit more subtle and in keeping.
