1.
I picked up a bass for the first time on my 49th birthday. Then I settled down with a copy of http://stuartclayton...sh-course-bass/ Stuart is also a Basschatter, and this book assumes that you are starting from no knowledge at all. After a couple of months, I thought it made sense to start spending money on lessons to build on what I'd learned from the book. Six months in, I started jamming with a guitarist. Nine months and I was attending local jam sessions. I joined my first band 18 months after starting. I now play 40/50 gigs a year with several different bands, on both electric bass and double bass. I am not 'special', I didn't already play guitar, I have never studied music. I wish I had started as young as 40!
Well done! I hope to follow your steps
 2.
No, my advice is to try both and go with the one that feels most comfortable. I know many left handed people who have chosen to play right handed for what I believe to be the wrong reasons. Doing what feels most comfortable is by far the best reason to play one way or the other. Handedness is a very complex thing that happens in your brain. I can explain it further if you wish, but I do not wish to spoil the thread without good reason.
You can explain, there is no problem....
 3.
Sounds fine to me.
So, your advice is to learn as a right-handed?
 4.
Do you do most others things left handed? By all means try both, but if you're handedness is strong you will know. I've had no difficulty choosing left handed basses. It's only an issue if you really want a particular bass that isn't made left handed. Don't believe everything you read.
No, for all the things I do in life I'm righty, just to play guitar I'm left-handed. I'll try the two ways, then I choose who is the right for me.
 5.
Just a thought, if you're just starting out, have you considered learning to play right handed? I'm a righty myself, but I'm aware that our left handed friends are cruelly discriminated against when it comes to the availability and range of basses made for them.
It's one of my big questions, try to learn as righty or a left-handed...Some people advice me to learn as a right-handed. I have to try the two options.
 6.
You might want to post where you are - you could be living round the corner from a BCer who's prepared to help....
I dont think so, I'm from Portugal...
 7.
Whatever time the wife and children allow me to have ;0) Usually 3 to 4 times a week and for usually 30-60 minutes. Make it a habit and it helps to keep a record of what you are practising and learning. I seem to spend most my time learning new covers and making sure I don't forget the old ones!
The first step is to convince my wife to let me buy the bass...
 8.
I played when I was in my 20s - stopped for about 15 years - the stuff I've learnt since starting playing again would have been beyond me back then - wasn't focused enough. As others have said "never to late"... Initially there's no real reason to pay for knowledge, loads available on the Internet, stuff here, SBL.com,etc. Learn your major and minor scales first - once you know these it's pretty much playing any of these in time and in the right key. A bit over-simplified but true. Don't forget to recognise your progress, "from small acorns great Oak trees grow", "slow and steady", loads of sayings which mean that you need to stick with it. If you can you'll get there. You've come to the right place for help and answers to your "daft questions" - BTW there aren't any. Welcome...
I created a fold in my laptop with a lot of websites, tutorials and videos about learning bass guitar. I'm compilating the max of information I can get to start. Although, I don't have the instrument yet, I'm reading and seeing a lot....
 9.
As someone that came late to bass, I would say get a tutor, even if it's just once a month. All the knowledge on the internet means nothing if you don't know how to apply it. Plus a tutor can give you immediate feedback and correct you - you dont get that from youtube! Play with other people, don't just play on your own otherwise you will get bored really quickly.
I already have a tutor in mind. He is helping me to get a good left-handed bass with a fair price. I agree with you, it's important to get a tutor.
 10.
I started 9 months ago at 44, was gigging by December, have had several gigs now, one a week on Friday and several, more booked. Go for it, it's great fun and a brilliant way to focus your mind and relax.
How many time you spend playing the bass?
 11.
I taught myself. I already played guitar and could read music, so that helped a lot! These days there are lots of good resources on the internet, many of them free.
Yes, I'm compiling as much information as I can, from websites to videos. Now, I'm choosing my first bass guitar, isn't easy.
 12.
Never too old. I didn't start till I was 40. Go for it!
You learn by yourself or you get a teacher?
 13. Hi, I'm 40 years old and I'm thinking to start learning to play bass guitar. I just read a lot information about the instrument, learning experiences, difficulties... My question is, I'm too old to learn to play bass guitar and how far I can go? Thanks
