  1. I see Mark already has a feedback thread so, would just like to add, I bought a lovely almost brand new Yamaha TRBX305 from Mark, yesterday, exactly as described.

His house is warm and he makes a really good coffee!

    Cheers, Mark!

my spector 5 RST is the lightest bass I own, it was one of the lightest basses at the last bass bash - can't remember what it was but it is 3.3KG on the web, it is lighter than my Ibanez EHB1505, which is in itself not exactly heavy.

:D  I appreciate that some other basses are quite light as well.  If anyone wants to sell me a 5 string that is this light, and is not an EHB, well, let's say I'm open to the suggestion. :D

5 string basses are not heavier than 4 string basses. My Lull PJ5 weighs less than my 68 Fender Precision.  Some basses are boat anchors and some aren't. The number of strings is irrelevant.

I have to disagree with this.  5 string basses are always heavier that 4 string basses, of the same type, obviously.  But yes, I understand what you mean about some basses being lighter than others.

I agree with the rest of your post. :)

8.20, you'll notice Scott says that muting will be an automatic response, but floating thumb which he is using, isn't an easy technique in itself. So that's how he got around it:

A lot of slappers like four strings, no B to mute.

After a work related hand injury about a year ago (thankfully my right hand), I have to play with a pick! lol

Extra string, extra muting. Even if you only use it twice in a gig you still have to concentrate on muting it throughout.

I know.  Extra weight as well.  I'm going to persevere with it for the time being though, because switching basses mid-set is just confusing me.

Sadly, thanks to a glass back the six is just too heavy now so I've recently had to go back to playing a four string.

I've never actually owned a five string, bit I've currently got one on my watch list for when finances allow.

Have you seen the Ibanez EHBs?  They are definitely on my watch list.  About 3.3kg for a 5 string, I believe.

    All songs require notes.

Those notes can be found on the B string,  above the 5th fret, just as much as on the other four strings.

Frets 1 to 4 on the B string give new notes, but the rest of the frets on the B string give a different tone, and new ways of reaching the 5th below the root note.

https://youtu.be/ZMF3nYfNo2w - here, the bassist in the Maytals using a 34" scale 5 string bass at the 5th fret, to give a short-scale sound.

After two weeks of trying to play the 5 string, this has only just started to occur to me.  And even though it looks like I'm playing a massive bass, it seems there's less stretch on my little hand if I play above the 5th fret on that B string...

Lee Sklar has talked about this in the past. Basically, his take is that even if there's only 1 song in the set that needs a 5 string, he'll use it for the entire show.

Seems a sensible approach to me.

    I like Lee Sklar. 😊

You could also use a 4 string bass and tune it B E A D instead.

I actually tried this with heavier gauge strings on one of my basses.  Then I found that although I thought I didn't use that G string very much, I actually did use it quite a lot! 😆

  10. Yeah, well, my 4 string did a job on those two songs, but in a higher octave.  I just find the lower notes on the 5 string sound better, because that's how those two songs were recorded (Don't Break My Heart Again, Separate Ways (Shallow Side version), so I' now trying to find a use, in the rest of the songs, to not look like a pretentious silly billy.  There is also the fact that I can barely play a four string.

  11. Am I being pretentious for playing a 5 string bass, when only two songs of my band's set list actually require it?

I find I'm fitting some very low notes into Sympathy for the Devil (admittedly, the Motorhead version, so...)... and then finishing some of the songs on a very low octave bass note...  I kind of feel like I'm falling into the same trap that my drummer does, when he slows down the ending of... EVERY.... SONG....

Nanyo Bass Collection. IIRC there's one in the marketplace at the moment.

My 5 string Nanyo is not so light, it's a whopping whole 4kg on my suitcase scales.  My 4 string Nanyo comes in at 3.4kg.  They are both the see-through finish sen bodied versions (forget which series).

I need a lighter 5 string, so I'm currently looking at Ibanez EHBs - the question is long or short scale... 🤔

It looks like you may have solved your problem. If not then your question is about whether the 130W from the TC will be enough. I use the similar Warwick Gnome for rehearsal. For me it is enough. We aren’t as loud at rehearsal as we are live but our drummer is still fairly energetic. For me having an amp that fits in my guitar case just makes life so much easier.

I think I may be sorted now, with the RM300.  Yes, it's bigger... so not as convenient, but does look like it's got a bit more functionality.  You know what the next question's going to be though - "Recommend a decent cab for my RM300"... lol

But yes, that was my original question.  My simple maths was 25% of 350W (I believe that's what the Fender 500 is, without the extension cab) is about 85W, so the TC should have been enough.  But again, not sure of these things, having only ever used combos - thought I'd ask!
