I'm guessing i've met you as it was a shop i used a lot from 80's till it closed. Bought my Thumb NT in 89. Was an amazing bass collection sadly long gone.

Possibly! Spent a lot of time in there as a teen in the early ‘00s until they closed. Heart breaking. Glad to see GuitarGuitar opened up and really the only place with a great bass selection in Scotland. Kenny’s is now in the old SC. I think that was the acoustic guy from SC who’s running that and I think GG may have been 1-2 guys from SC.

I also remember they had a Trace V8 in there. Wish I’d got to try that monster out!

  2. Played a gig with a guitar/drum 2 piece who was using this. The E/A strings were fed into an octave and fuzz to mimic a bass player. Of all the 2 piecer bands that try to work with a split signal they were of the better bands to pull off a solid full sound.

Pretty cool but always better with a real bass… 😁

Oddly enough i bought my Warwick from Sound Control in Glasgow and when it developed a fault with the electronics module when you went from active to passive there was a very loud speaker damaging pop sound the bass was initially sent to Moon Guitars in Galsgow who couldn't do anything as the electronics were silicone encapulated modules. It was then sent to Bass Centre who were main distributors for Warwick who also couldn't sort it and finally returned to Warwick who replaced the module. It took about a month if i remember right to be returned to me but Sound Control gave me the pick of the shop while mine was away so i picked the other bass i was looking at a Warwick Streamer with gold fittings. Was very nice and better balanced than the Thumb but didnt have the tone i wanted.

I got a really nice apologetic letter from Germany in broken English plus a lot of goodies thrown in incl sweatshirt, 3 sets of Elite strings, several advertising posters, pens and some other bits and bobs.

Bass was great up until a few yrs back when same fault appeared and Warwick no longer sell the encapsulated modules so i had to have a MEC pre-amp fitted. Not sure the bass sounds just as good so i might put it back in and get the EMG pre-amp fitted.

The Thumb bass has some sentimental value as my new girlfriend (now my wife) went with me when i went into Glasgow to try as many basses as i could and she also liked the look of the Thumb and thought it sounded best. Maybe she was just being nice and supportive, a YES DEAR kind of support :laugh1:

man I miss sound control! Did my work experience in there. Got to spend a few days playing every bass in there through a multitude of great rigs. I still lust after a M/B M2000 and the RoadReady 4x10’s…

  4. I've been a NYXL guy since they came out. I love them. They are very similar to the XL's but last a lot longer and I feel like there is more articulation from each note and my open E has this beautiful piano'ish attack and thunder. I'll pick up XL's if I'm skint but find I'm ready to change within 6 months, NYXL's tend to last me a year. Last set was 2 but due to COVID was playing a lot less.

    Gutted, because it sounded awesome.

Unfortunately, having learned from experience, it's always worth getting a second hand amp checked out by a tech unless you know the actual history or have a recent service certificate.

Not familiar with issues of this model, so maybe someone will have the solution, sadly there could be a multitude of issues that only a tech can sort.

Good (from a blagger's POV) to see this sort of thing still happens!

I've had more than my fair share of very, very silly Ebay bargains - typically when the seller had no idea what they had, or from errors in the listing making it hard for most people to find. Really very unusual these days.

My TE V4 cost £220. It was listed under PA gear.

Sadly bargains are so rare on eBay I’ve pretty much given up. There was a TE 2x15 cab listed for £80 in Glasgow in pristine condition recently. Way too impractical for me but what a steal!

  7. Hey guys...

Sadly one of my 10” Celestions has died in my 2103H (C10T-90 speaker).  The cone is all fine, I believe it’s the voice coil as the speaker is distorting.

Anyone have any recommendations for a replacement? Would prefer to keep the cab as an 8 Ohm/200W so I can still comfortably pair it with my TE 15” for bigger gigs.

  8. I carry pretty much all of the above. I got an advent calendar a few years that instead of chocolate contained a Wera multitool kit. You got a screwdriver head each day. Comes in a small handy little bag that all the attachments click into.
Just like this one - but doubt it was anywhere near as expensive. Really handy for adjustOMG action and pickup height on the fly (should really replace some old screws on the basses...)

Some folk would say 5-10 minutes.

Myself, once I turn on my Trace V6 on I give it about 90 seconds or so before I hit standby. That is the case though if the amp is sitting in the same place and isn't being moved between use.

If the amp has been in transit and I had just taken the amp from a very cold environment (from a car in the middle of December to a venue), I would probably let the amp sit for 5-10 minutes before I would even turn the amp on at all.

As far as I'm concerned that article is a myth. My first amp was a '65 Fender Bassman that I bought new. In the US everyone who could afford them played Fender, everyone turned on both the power and the standby switches at the same time after setting up, and everyone used the standby switch for beer, or other substances, breaks. I also never heard a pop from using the switch, or saw a driver or power supply cap damaged as a result.

Quoted from a '60s Fender Concert Amp manual:

Standby Switch: This switch turns the amplifier on and off. In the Standby position the amplifier is off; however, the tube filaments are left on as to eliminate warm up time, provided that the main Power Switch is on. Use of this feature during short breaks versus using the Power Switch will increase tube life.

Gotta agree. If it's been cold and in transit, yeah, let it sit in the room for a bit to warm to room temperature before plugging in and turning on. I generally give around 30s as a minimum, on a gig I'll turn on and then I'll set up the pedals etc. I have heard of tubes blowing up from the sudden temp swing during extremely cold winters.

The using standby vs. tube life depends on the amp, the last time I read about it. Some amps make no difference to tube life, some will. I can guarantee unless your amp is in standby mode for days on end you won't see or hear the difference made to the tube life.

  10. I generally shop around for whoever has an offer. I've never had to pay more than £30 inc P&P.

Worth having a look on Amazon as well; they often do single strings as an 'add on' for a few quid if you're a Prime member. I Scored a couple of E's (I always seem to kill them before the rest of the set) for £7 total when buying other stuff.

If someone can sort me out cheaper though, I'm all ears!! :)

  11. On the train at the moment with my G3 in tow, I’m really happy with this. Very comfortable although the neck sits quite high with the straps as long as possible. I’m not that tall at 5’9” so I’ll be ducking every doorway... it’s the nicest bag I’ve ever had. Always said if I have to pay more than 50-60 then I’d just get a Mono (since I know it fits).
