2. I'm a Dub Addict Reggae Bassman. To get deep into Rumbleland, a combination of a Fender '73 Tele Bass (Squier do a reissue around £270- bargain) wi the the big fat humbucker PU right on the neck, tone = 0. Strung with Rotosound Tru Bass Black Nylon Flatwounds. Graphic EQ - Boost 50hz, Cut 150-300hz (to cut out the mud), Cut everything above 800hz. 2x10 + 1x15/18 speaker cabs and chuck away any horns. To even look at a plectrum is a sackable offence !!! (fingers and thumbs only)
Only then, would Lee "Scratch" Perry consider you entry to the Studio.
One Love.

7.
Which profile neck is it?
I had one the same back then with a neck that matched my '72 P-bass.
Seen others with deep C clubby profiles.

Man, I miss it... brand new condition with white plate.
An Edinburgh shop called and said a guy forom Switzerland was depsatate for one, so I allowed it to be owned in a Tokai tweed case for £375. I had paid £325, so I let it go.
Sob.
It is a U profile.

8.
That is lovely! I can't see it hanging around long. I'm half tempted myself but must resist! Is that strung with black nylons or are they just the original strings? :)
Yep, Rotosound Tru Bass Black Nylon Flatwounds. So frets are in A1 condition.

9. Hi Folks

My '73 Fender Telecaster Bass, I have decided to sell. (see attached photos) To finance a Bass rig purchase.

I bought this Bass in '83 for its deep tone (Humbucker on neck), as I am a Reggae Bassman.
When I bought it, it had a white scratchplate. I replaced it with a black one which really suits it. Apart from that it is all origenal. A solid no-nonsense Bass in perfect working order.

A rare item indeed.

£1400

10.
Planning to play someof the Easy Star All Stars re-visioning tracks too, Dub Side of The Moon but probably not the Sergeant Pepper ones which I don't think work nearly as well.

What about reggaefied contemporary hits? Do you do any of that?
Reggaefy-ing contemporary hits is a good idea, especially if you are playing to Reggae-Virgins or Hairy-Bikers. The Easy Star All Stars got it right wi Floyd (but not their Radiohead stuff). Beatles stuff is a must, "Obla-de" is almost Reggae, as so is "Hotel California" by The Eagles.
"Knocking on Heavans Door" and "Hey Joe" lend themselves well to Reggae dropping into Heavy Dub sections half way thro.
Country and Western ??? And musos should be aware that Scottish Country Dance music is 99% Ska !!! Roots Mon!

But ! Reggaefying pop will be heavily dependant on your Kick-Partner's (Drummer) understanding and feel for the Genre.
If not, then you'll end up sounding like "Men At Work" (Gosh! I've just made myself throw up)

Oh ! Another track that gets my Hips going is "Stop that Train" by Clint Eastwood & General Saint.

11.
I forgot this by Marcia Aitken - I just luuuuuve this song!

I was in JA a couple of years ago and just about every band we saw played this & it filled the floor every time :)

Obviously this riddim has been used a hell of a lot - I guess for the UK it's most remembered for Althea & Donna's Uptown Top Ranking.

This is the long version with someone toasting at the end (I'm guessing Trinity?).

I always wondered what a pair of "earthman shoes" was and how they looked with some "diamond socks", lol

Of course - with the advent of the interweb I've just looked them up:
Oh yes a Hotty !

12. I've never been in a covers band, but if I did I would consider the following as floor fillers :

Good thing going - Sugar Minott
OK Fred - Errol Dunkley
54-46 - Toots and the Maytals
Money in my Pocket - Dennis Brown
Johnny B Goode - Peter Tosh
Could you be Loved - Bob Marley
Jammin - Bob Marley
Get up Stand up - Bob Marley
I Shot the sherrif - Bob Marley
I can see clearly now - Jimmy Cliff
Born for a purpose - Dr Alimantado
No No No - Dawn Penn
007 - Desmond decker
Israelites - Desmond Decker
Gun Of Navarone - The Skatalites (Brass / Instrumental)
Beds too Big Without you - Shiela Hylton
Red Red Wine - UB40
Easy - Jimmy Lindsey
Girlie Girlie - Sophia George
Im in a Dancing Mood - Delroy Wilson
Under Mi Sensi - Barrington Levi
Pass the Kutchie - The Mighty Diamonds

2-Tone :
One Step Beyond - Madness
Gangsters - The Specials

I could go on ........

One Love

13.
Was the neck only fit for the bin, or did you just fancy changing it ?
Yes, the neck was the sh*t bit o the original Bass. Measured 40mm nut width, and as I love the slim 38mm jazz neck, that was paramount in the project. If there is one thing I've learnt over the years, is the neck is integral to the feel of a Bass. Carving it to a Tele headstock made it pleasing to the eye. See the earlier comment from NancyJohnson.

14.
I use a fender jazz bass with just the neck pup and the tone rolled off for the best natural reggae tone I've ever found.
I'd like to compare it to the Ashton.
Definatly worth it even as a No.2 Bass, as ye can pick up a new Ashton AB900 for a Bargin price of £150 (or cheaper if ye can find a B-stock, as I did)
