1. My mates selling his bass as he's a guitarist and it gets very little use. He will be buying a cheaper bass with the proceeds so may accept a px with cash his way.

I'll get pics up as soon as i get them from him, but its a tobacco burst in good condition for used.

Is there any interest from you guys (and gals)? He's looking for £300

Sorry, pics arent the best, camera phone jobbies im afraid.

  2. Thanks for all your support guys, and i think i'll definately be taking you up on that offer Bilbo as soon as the car's back on the road if its still on the table.

I think a couple of pointers and some lessons will get me well on the way, at least then i'll know if what im doing is right, and wether im progressing at an expected level, or wether im even progressing at all.

I'll PM you in a few days Bilbo, felixestowe's not a million miles away. You can talk about Jazz all you like, i love learning about music i havnt paid much attention to in the past.

Its great having this forum... Without it i dont know if i'd have even got this far.

  3. Yo guys, after being excited about bass for months, and finally getting my bass and being absolutely rubbish, and the whole thing being really disheartening i think i desperately need a proper lesson, or at least some face to face tuition, or just some face to face advice.

I knew i was not so good, but a mate came over (a guitar player) and started playing the crap out of my bass for fun and that sent my confidence rock bottom, and ive been neglecting this place in the process, and i just feel really bad and low about everything bass related.

I went to the Offset Festival in Romford, Essex over the weekend, and i've well and truly got the bass bug back, and the desire for a white Thunderbird but thats another story, anyways, is there anyone local to Colchester, or Essex as a whole who would fancy giveing me a few pointers or at least slowly showing me what they do? Im not a rich man but i will play this bass well if its the last thing i do!!!

    Rant over, thanks in advance,

Jesus (slightly wrecked on red wine but staring at his bass that deserves better)

  4. Yeah it is in awesme condition, Im going to watch a mates' band play tonight in Colchester. They're supporting Brigade if thats means anything to anyone, they're not my cup o tea. Anyway, i'll have a a look at how low his strings are get an idea of how high mine are.

If i lower the strings on the bridge, how would i go about adjusting the strings to stop the buzz?

  5.
You were trying to link to your hard drive? Or was the apostrophe causing problems?
No i was taking the img link from photobucket but still using the insert image button here, so i had " class="ipsImage" />" class="ipsImage" />myphoto
I didnt realise untill i was posting it above and saw my mistake.

  6. Ive got Disturbed on, more specifically Criminal by Disturbed. Not everyones taste but i quite like them.

Usually i'll have anything on from Atreyu, A7X, Iron Maiden, Story of the Year, Pantera to The O'Jays, Era, Bootsy Collins, and a special place in my heart belongs to the Blues Brothers.

  7.
Hi Jesus have you got any allen keys to fit the grub screws in the saddles?
    Have you got a tuner?
Have a fiddle around trying to to lower the action, as Ben says, it's best to start getting to know how your bass functions because you will probably save a fortune in the long run.
Try to post a pic of the bass neck, side on, looking down the edge of the fretboard from the headstock down so we can see if the neck needs to be straightened using the truss rod. Do you have a friend who knows what they are doing when it comes to setting up a bass? If so get them to show you how it is done, if not, I'm sure we could help you be remote control (a bit like trying to land a plane when the pilot is out of action). :)
Just remember to do small adjustments and retune each time you make them.
    We'll get you sorted.
Ive got a tuner, and some small allen keys so i'll check that out when i get home, i dont think the necks in bad shape, apparently it was set-up 3months ago. could it be just a simple job of lowering each string at the bridge? Im worried that if i do that, then the buzz i have already will be a lot worse?

  8. Cheers guys... im going to do a search a bit later on to see if there are any tutorials or guides to setting it up. Like you say if i get it wrong its gonna ahve to go to a shop anyway.

Cani cause any damage or anything pissing about with the truss rod?

  9.
That's a really nice looking bass :) Just one thing, is it the picture angle or is the action of your E string really high?
As i said above, this is my first bass and im of the opinion thats the action is high, but im getting some fret buzz all of the fret board. Would it be easy for a complete novice to attempt to set it up lower? Are there guides here or anywhere that i could follow?

i was attempting this... oh hang on i think ive realised the issue..................

  11. Its far from the most expensive, best looking, best conditioned, greatest sounding bass to grace these pages, but it is MY bass and i love it!

Made in the late 90's in a small but modern factory in Korea, this is from a prototype range Aria released in limited numbers sporting passive/active electronics, selectable humbucker, and this particular instrument shows off a shiny clear-red finish. Not much is known about this very rare import but it is believed it was crafted by Buddhist Monks, exiled from their native land because of unresolveable musical differences. We can also presume Michael Knight and Stringfellow Hawke had something to do with the design due to its all-round kick-ass-ness.

Purchased on ebay and i believe formally owned by a member of this forum, straight out the box i was well chuffed with it. Described as "very good for secondhand" i expected a little tattiness, a scratch here or there, but i was p[leasantly surprised. It has surpassed all expectations.

I feel that the action is a little high, and to begin with there was no fret buzz whatsoever and it played well, but since saturday im getting some pretty crazy fret buzz on the E-string, and i still feel i'd be more comfortable playing with a lower action. Remember tho this is the first bass i've owned, played, and really taken much detailed notice of so maybe this is the average kind of string height people use, i've tried to take some pics to show the string height, let me know what you think? I know this isnt the place but the pics will be here.

    Comment & Criticise away...

(Im sure you can see i am a professional photographer and i am available for weddings, christenings, graduatuons, and those other really important cant miss moments)

edit: Ive just seen how truly sh*t these pics are. That'll teach me for uploading before ive seen them, i'll strive to do some actually worth looking at tomorrow, sorry guys.

  12. After a combined practice time of not that long find myself struggling with what should be fairly easy stuff i would have thought.

I checked out the beginners lessons that have been sticky-ed in the technique forum and can play the first lesson (U2) with fairly good timing, but my left hand speed is shocking going up and down the neck from the 7th fret to the 3rd, then back to the 10th. Ive also noticed that i have practically no dexterity in my fingers whatsoever, will this get better? Its a big worry.

I also thought it would be nice to learn a bass line i like so i started learning No Easy Way Out (the tune from rocky, can remember who the original is by but Bullet For My Valentine recently covered it). Im really having trouble with my speed up and down the neck.

And now im getting a fret buzz that i didnt have yesterday, why would that be? I also have a feeling the action is quite high to what maybe the majority would have it set-up. Will anyone be able to give some advice if i get some pics up tomorrow?

And to top it all i forgot to mention im a lefty learning right. I thought this might be more advantageous in the future when it comes to be able to pick up anyones bass in the future and jam rather than carrying mine around with me everywhere, and as ive never played guitar or bass before my body shouldnt know any different right? Although i did air-guitar left handed.

  13. Right just got in from my extended london jaunt, i'll get some pics up tomorrow morn for those that want to to oogle over. Im gonna take a look at all your suggestions, and choose something that im gonna enjoy learning. And as for the books, im gonna see how much their going for and where i can pick 'em up from. I nearl ypicked up a copy of the idiots guide to bass but thought it would be best to hear from you guys befor espending my hard earned on something that could be useless...
