I solved it with some 2mm ish plastic. Drilled holes to allow pole screws through and then epoxy glued the plastic to pickup cover (inside). Mine rattled even with foam packing method thus the more drastic solution.

That's a great idea, I might give that a try now. I was looking at some other options like the Dimarzio model one (why oh why can't they make one with a chrome cover) or the novac mudbucker but I think I'm going to stay stock for now.

I had the same issue with mine and just cut some window strip foam from poundland,to sit on the existing four pieces of foam and the rattle was gone,I must say though it seems a bit of a bizarre way to seat a pickup but I love the playabilty of the sg.

I've almost managed to get rid of it using some harder foam (the stuff that graphics cards come packaged in), it's still there a little bit so I may need to add some more, I'm just a little worried about putting too much in there and causing some damage to the cover or pick-up. It really is such a daft way to mount a pick-up, pretty much no adjustment at all.

And yeah the playability is insane, it's half the reason I went for one. It practically plays itself.

  3. Hello folks,

Recently brought my self a Gibson SG Special Bass in Chocolate, everything is spot on apart from one thing: The neck pick-up/cover rattles quite a lot when playing. The only reason I didn't return the bass was because it was the last one any one had in stock and they wouldn't be able to get any more (I tried 4 stores and all said the same). Would rather not send it in for warranty.

The way it works is the pick-up is sandwiched between the body (with some foam) and the cover, there are no screws holding the pick-up itself.

I've tried adding more foam (enough to make a small sofa) under the pick-up to the point where it was hard to screw the cover on. It made it a little better but it's still there and still driving me mad. I even tried adding blu-tack to the top of the pick-up so there was no metal on metal contact with the cover.

I saw a demo video a few months ago where someone had the same issue and fixed it somehow, but I can't find it for the life of me.

    Any ideas?

  4. Finally struck some gold. (Hope it's ok to post a guitar auction here)

A £175,000 not real Charvel connected by mystical powers to Mozart himself.

    A few choice excerpts:
The artist used the Musical Spirit Energy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and painted on this guitar body in a particular energetic way!!

This guitar it will make you strictly connected with AMADEUS , believed or NOT!!
It means that if you really decide to play this guitar, you are going to do something really AMAZING with but i prevent you!!
5. Actually thinking of having a punt and getting one of the 2014 specials in fireburst or chocolate from PMT. Only problem is I'd have to order on-line without going in store so I might end up with one with naff frets.

    I wonder why there isn't a 2015 special model?

  6. That is just stunning.

I've been GASing for an SG for a while now and I think the time is finally here.

Think I might go for last year's model because I really like the walnut finish that they don't seem to do the 2015 in.

I wonder how these compare with the SG specials? Half the price for a very pretty satin fire burst model is tempting.

  7. Brought a Gallien Krueger 700RB II from Grahame. He kindly put it on hold for me for a day or two, shipped very quickly (and very well packaged) and answered all my questions.

Top bloke, absolute pleasure to deal with. Can't speak highly enough of him.

    Thanks again!

  8. I have the combo, nice little amp but definitely not loud enough to gig at all. I'd definitely suggest swapping the valves, mine sounded quite clanky with the gain turned up a bit, but with a GT5751 and 2 NOS EL-84Ms it sounds quite a bit better.

  9. Brought a kit for my Charvel 1b from John, top notch communications and turn around time.

He even included some shielding tape and a wee little screwdriver!

Absolute pleasure to deal with, thanks again John.

But do you have them on all 4 strings? That capo set up is no use to me. Transposing all our material onto another fret where all my major notes would be on minor frets would confuse the hell out of me and as I'm the singer, I can't afford to be concentrating too much on what I'm playing.

As long as your headstock has enough room to fit them you should be fine. Not sure how the neck would handle the changes in tension though. I think that's why Michael Manring uses a carbon neck.
