Some people on here take themselves way too seriously.... :P

    Moi? Serious?

Some people also call me condescending (thats talking down to people...).

There's a difference between generating lively debate and coming across as a dick.

Just step back for minute and consider this. If Wal's are as shockingly awful as you make them out to be, then why the demand and longevity of the brand? You don't like them - fair enough. It doesn't make them bad instruments.

Members have as much right to post in your pointless threads as you have to start them (unfortunately) in the first place.

So I believe - but not in your case my friend.

I am not of'Fender'ed by anything that you have posted. Forums are all about lively debate imo 👍

That is so bad that it is good!

Thank you for the POV. I really enjoy lively debate, humour, good natured argument and such like. Shows a bit of passion.

Mind you - I've been pulled up by the Mods before so it is not like I am a first o'Fender'. Sorry - couldn't help my self. Had to Jazz it up somehow.!!!!!

My only experience of a Wal was about 15 years ago, watching someone else play one over the course of a few months. That distinctive and and rich growl is something I can mentally recall to this day. It was thoroughly inappropriate for 90% of the material he was playing, but it was one hell of a tone. Aesthetically it was just the headstock for me- a bit like Plug from the Bash Street Kids!

That 'All Growl' tone would be very useful as part of a toolbox of basses but, even as a player by trade, the cost would outweigh the benefits for me. If they were cheaper or I had the dosh I'd certainly give one a fair shot though, much as with a Rick 4003.
.

But you'd have thought that in this day and age it would be easy peasy to recreate the Wal tone via software - say using a Line 6 gadget.

Have you not stirred up enough trouble yet? Baiting the mods - you fed up of being a member on here or something?
And you felt the need to intervene why?

I'll usually go straight to YouTube and find a tutorial where someone has already nailed the song and is showing you how to play it. Many times the bass part is isolated.

After I learn the song then I will put my personal spin on it.

    Absolutely works for me.

Plus you get to see many different interpretations of the same song.

Perhaps a new hobby would soak up some of the vitriol?

Tried it once but the buggers just kept droning on and on and on.

Then they started a union and demanded more honey and shorter working flowers.

I jacked it in after that.

I have a table and chairs as a give-away if it helps. Could be a really solid investment opportunity. Great condition for it's age (mid '90s); tone to die for...

    Eh? Eh?

What's the action like on the chairs? I don't want it set too low or it is difficult to reach my cutlery.

This must be the most extreme case ever of a disguised advert.

Do you think Davey-Schmavey has managed to sell his Wal yet?
Jacky Wacky

Sold my ACG last week actually. Buyer is away for the October break and will conclude on his return.

I am most certainly not selling a Wal. Couldn't afford one. Would only buy as an investment anyway as I simply don't care for them as an instrument.

Back on the original point, I walked into a music shop in around 1996 with £800 burning a hole in my pocket they had two second hand basses on the wall for £800...a wal custom and a musicman stingray V. I had lusted after a wal for years after listening to mick Karn, geddy Lee and a couple of local guys...walked out the shop with the musicman after spending around 40 mins playing the wal. Neck profile was just not good for me and it was heavy....sounded great but I couldn't get comfy playing it. Lesson learned.
But just think. I you'd have bought the Wal it would be worth a fortune. You wouldn't even need to play it. Just leave it gathering dust and increasing in value year on year.

Those options are not mutually exclusive.
You are correct - and who wouldn't want to buy something nice and have a good return on it when selling on?

Says more about market forces than the intrinsic value of the product being purchased - which is the point I was trying to make 100 posts ago.

  12. So - quite a number of posters have mentioned the gains they have made by selling on Wals for 2, 3 and 4 x the original cost.

I can't help but draw parallels between art lovers who invest in art as opposed to those who are invested in the art - if you get my distinction.

Is a Wal bass an investment (like property in a good area) or is it a purchase from the heart?
