Is the price of BB's going up 🤔 ?

Yes and no. There are still bargains to be had if you keep an eye out. I’d say the newer 3 series are very keenly priced as there’s a lot of them about - with the exception of the 434 which often seems a bit overpriced to me, used. 424/5 prices are definitely creeping up. Getting close to 1024/5 prices so you may as well get one of those if you’re in the market. Same but better everything.

I do hope some BB hyperinflation happens because I have stock in BBs that I’m looking to cash out.

If you're only using the 734A in passive mode, maybe worth also having a think about a 1024, which is purely passive and a bass that a lot of us have loved on here and its 5 string sibling, the 1025.

Chunkier neck profile but overall classier with very special pickups.

Also the BB414 which I personally prefer over the BB734 as a passive p/j.  Similar slim neck profile.

    They’re all great, though.

I bought one of these with the intention of using the neck for another project which didn't pan out.

They are very similar to the BBG5 model. I had trouble finding any significant difference.

BB404/405/604/605: Access to the upper frets (20-24ish) is significantly improved. The body is more sculpted and more comfortable to play sat down. Bridge has grooves to keep saddles in place which not all of the BBG or BBN range do. 5 string is 18mm at bridge rather than 19mm. They’re all good but different in small ways.

I love the look of these basses, and have only heard great stuff about them.

Would wish Yamaha made a short scale version with a reverse orientation P in it, if so I would be 100% certain to buy it as soon as I got the money for it, but I suppose that is likely to remain but a wish unfortunately.

They ought to make a short scale BB really though, with how popular short scale basses has become in recent years I am sure it would sell great, and it in that light I think it is odd that Yamaha offers no current production short scale basses at all, seems to me that they are missing out big time on getting a share of that market.

I am pretty certain a short scale Yamaha in just about any form would be a hit and sell great.

They did a medium scale BB in the past. Bassbros have one for sale at the moment

  5. Perhaps it’s a failure of imagination on my part and lack of experience playing anything properly high end but I honestly can’t imagine how a bass could be better constructed than my BB2004. It’s basically flawless on every conceivable level. But I too struggle to get it to sound how I want on gigs. Lots of tops, lots of boomy bottom but can’t get the low mid punch that I want. Mines even got a (reverse) P pickup. I might swap out the pickups at some point.

Cheers Mick, buuuut it's exactly the "cut down" NE1 preamp on my BB2005 that I'm a little frustrated with! 😅

When the NE1 is engaged it basically just allows a mid scoop but no ability to boost mids. The scooped mids are ok-ish in a solo setting but no more than that - to me anyway (YMMV), but end up losing the bass in a band mix. There's a switch to by-pass the NE1 mid-scoop, and I've got it permanently set on by-pass. Be much more useful to have a standard mid EQ with ability to boost and the NE1 by-pass switch could then very usefully become an active/passive switch which is always a nice insurance to have in case of battery failure mid set, rather than the pre-amp being purely active.

I’ve had similar thoughts about wanting to have the switch be active/passive. I’d go for a 2 band active bass/treble then have the existing mid knob be a passive tone control instead. I’ve got a BB2004 but the electronics and layout is the same. I’m allergic to push-pull knobs. Any ideas?

  7. The master output level of your amp should not have any effect on the output given by the balanced output. The output of your bongo goes through the gain, then the EQ. There’s even a clipping indicator that will light up if the signal is really super hot. The master volume on the amp simply dictates how much signal gets fed to the power amp. Balanced output goes before that.

You just had a useless sound guy. Or maybe he just didn’t have the right tools at his disposal. Your gear is fine

    Hey guys,

I currently own a BB434 and a BB714 BS and love both, but I would like to hear your for feedback on purchasing a 1024x versus a 734A.

I found a used 1024X for similar price of a new 734A, and the 734A is basically the same as the 434 except the preamp and a few tweaks, so thinking that a 1024x would make more sense.

What I wanted in fact was to buy a used BBP34 (because the new is too expensive) but they are non-existent where I live so I am thinking the 1024X would be a good mid ground option.

    What would you do?

    Thanks!

Having played all that you’ve mentioned (except the BBP34) my choice would be the BB1024/x.

You might get it for £150 instead.

Come on, who’s bidding first? The tension is killing me.

A white one, which is the other best colour, just popped up on FB marketplace in Nottingham too.

I really don’t need two. Or three.

  10. P-pickup (normal or reverse) fretless BBs. What’s out there?

Was a BB414f ever made or just the active 614f?

O, oracles of the BB thread lend me your wisdom. And help me find one. The blue BB400s that was on Reverb last month is haunting my dreams.

  11. 1024/1025 (plus 414/415, 424/425, 2024/2025) have a unique pickup shape which no drop in replacements exist for. The good news is the pickups are fantastic and one of the many reasons for owning and playing one of these basses. Leave it alone! You probably have a dead or twisted string.

  12. So my mind is wandering back towards owning a traditional looking precision. I used to own a 62RI CIJ and we had a great time together but I think I’m after something a bit different:

Wide-ish but shallow-ish satin finish neck

    Contoured heel

    Not too expensive £500-£750 s/h

No upgrades required to sound great

Doesnt have to be a Fender but should look like one

    Whats out there?
