  1. I share Johannes view: I started playing 50 years ago and have had a couple of 'career breaks'. Each time I have returned, once I get back up to speed I feel I am playing better than ever - it is as though the experiences of being away from playing inform and improve my approach. I definitely feel more relaxed and more distanced/objective in my view of what I contribute to the band - so all positive. But at the age of 67 I'm not sure I can risk another break!

  2. I live in Kent but I'm sorry I'm not willing to help; the only opinion that matters on whether or not the bass is legit/in good order is yours. You are adding to the risk by involving third parties. If you want it that badly you should drive down to pick it up. Probably cheaper than getting a courier inc. insurance and you'll have peace of mind.

  3. Last year we offered to take a much-reduced fee at a pub we play regularly because really bad weather meant there was hardly anyone there - but I've not experienced the venue telling you the fee has been reduced. Also, there have been times when a pub has paid us extra if they've had a bumper take. I guess it's about partnerships, we each need the other.

Yep, this is the only way to do the collection thing - except payment on collection.

Nope, if you didn't use their thing where the buyer has to scan a barcode/QR code thing when they collect, I think they'll side with the buyer.  Sorry.

    lesson learned!

  5. 'Apparently it can involve PayPal and someone (not the buyer) turning up to collect it.'

I sold a bike at the weekend, the buyer paid through paypal and once he'd paid I sent him my address and he came to collect at the agreed time. All good (touch wood!), but I wondered what would happen if he then claimed someone else had collected it  - he'd get a refund (plus the bike!). I've no way of proving the person who came to my door at the agreed time was the buyer, but then only the buyer new the agreed time and my address.- would that be enough for paypal to side with me?

We auditioned a so called experienced guitarist last week who has played for 50+ years.

He turned up and spent a good twenty minutes trying to tune his guitar and he didn't mute it whilst doing so, I always record rehearsals and auditions, and the tone you hear in this clip of him tuning is the tone he used for every song we played regardless of the type of song.

    He didn't get the gig.

  7. thanks for the tips - the fitting has been successfully Araldited along with an internal reinforcement patch and it stood up to being gigged at the weekend. The tilt lock knob was removed and replaced with a standard bolt, to take stress off the joint (the led has tilt locks on both sides of the yoke, so it now runs on just one which is entirely adequate). Happy days!🤩

  8. 1. Why you don't have any gigs? - we do about 25-30 a year, but sometimes that's three in a week and then nothing for 6 weeks!

2.Do you rely on an agent ? no

3.Who finds coordinates and confirms gigs? - we are a four piece and we all have good contacts. We each take a lead on allotted venue/area of the county, so once an offer comes in the lead person take it through to payment, inc. publicity materials, all liaisoning etc.

    4.  Are you or any band members in this for the money? - no, it's a hobby band, albeit at a reasonable standard (he says modestly).

5.How much do you want to gig? - I'd like to play 50 gigs a year, but I'm retired from full time work now whereas the others aren't , so a gig a fortnight on average isn't too demanding for them.

6 BONUS QUESTION: How often do you rehearse?: Weekly when we are adding new material and when there is more than two weeks between gigs.

  9. The plastic case on one of our band's LED lights has broken, the area immediately around one of the tilt locks has come away from the body. Can anyone recommend a glue that will bond onto this sort of plastic? The light is worth repairing as it is a really good piece of kit, even though it was an inexpensive Chinese import. Pictures below.

Any advice will be gratefully appreciated. (It looks as though it has already been repaired, in a former life)

  10. Here's my Junior Jet, heavily sanded on the back to take about 1cm off the thickness so it now weighs about a feather, and I've finished the wood with a black water-based stain that gives it a plum colouring. Fitted with a TV Jones Thunderblade and a Schaller bridge, a coil-split switch and with my custom

tort plates, it looks and sounds great. I use it as a back up, but really it should be a front line bass as it plays so well; occasionally I take pity on it and give it a front line gig.

  11. I've learned so much about bass playing, gear, and etiquette/performance from reading this forum that I count it as part of my day's practice time!🙂 Thanks everyone.

  12. I think I've only been asked once about which bass players I like / influenced me. But being asked what bands I'm into is a regular topic of conversation, so perhaps this is a more useful line of discussion. To be honest, other than the really big names I don't know the names of many guitarists, keys or drummers so I wouldn't be equipped to ask the reverse question in a meaningful way.
