1. Ric - 50s design, thin pickups, rubbish tone with fingers (OKish with a pic) - Chris Squires - Precision for recording. Bruce Foxton - Precision because Rics impossible to keep in tune - look great/sound crap.

Great look, great style - but if you want to play bass then stick with a P/'Ray!!!

Every bass player dreams of a Ric - and every bass player goes back to a P after playing one!!

Nuf said.

2. Well, its taken 20 or so basses and various amps, cabs and combos but at the end of the day there is only one bass sound...

A Fender Precision through a valve amp (or, at least, a valve pre) into a 15 cab (or preferably a 2x15).

I will concede that a Fender Jazz might be acceptable - and a 2x10 can open up that 15 tone a little - but basically what Leo got right in '51 is still right today!

Kevlar body armour in place for all the comments that this post will generate!!

the sunburst mate the best colour
I'm glad you like it - I kick myself every day for selling it - have another sunburst now - 2011 model - but its not as nice - bit heavier and not as 'warm' sounding! Hey ho - my loss, your gain!!

The blue one? Have you registered it as stolen on the Rickenbacker register? They have a specific register for stolen Ricks, and if I was buying one it'd be the first place I'd look to try and check it's legitimacy.
No, the gorgeous blue one is perfectly 'kosher' - bass to die for!!

'Mine' was the 2008 model Jetglo with the custom black pickguard and the custom bridge pickup surround. I'll check out the Ric register. Insurance paid me out at the time - I have since informed all the interested parties that it popped up on ebay - down to them if they want to do anything about it.

on the subject of left handed basses any one got a left handed rickenbacker for sale
Well, the one I had stolen in 2010 just sold on ebay - no doubt it will appear again!! Police and insurers informed - for all the good that did!! The insurance payout was invested in a Fender Precision.

Interesting. Do you happen to remember whether it was 17% by model or 17% of actual sales? Also, I wonder if it would be the same now. You'd like to think it would be better, but I'm not so sure.
From memory - no idea where my notes are - it was my calculation based on models available in the UK. No one I spoke to would impart any financial information so no idea about lefty sales - or righty for that matter!!

7. Try a MarkBass R500 - break up really nicely if you push them - AX7 pre tube - Markbass take on the SVT3. Its now discontinued and going for silly money (for what it is) if you hunt around - there's one on ebay for £599 - list was around £850. Thomann had them even cheaper but they've all gone :(

8. I researched and wrote and article on left handed basses a few years ago. Given that only about 10% of the population are lefties, the number of lefty basses available probably exceeds that - this is especially true at the entry and low price end of the market.
Warwick, for instance, offer nearly all of their basses in leftie and Musicman supply their most popular models in leftie. Of course Gibson offer nothing and Fender - possibly the iconic bass brand - only offer one Precision and two Jazz models. The real pain, is that the choice is generally limited and special editions are rarely issued in left hand form.
From memory, when I did the piece, about 17% of basses offered in the UK were left handed (bearing in mind that Warwick offered almost 100% and Fender around 5% of their ranges)
In the past I have gone down the Warmoth route to build custom lefties although I've now gone full circle and back to an 'old skool' American Precision.
Good luck with the research - I'll have a Musicman Stingray HH with Piezo in Rebel Yellow with an ebony fretboard and black hardware when you persuade them all to offer some decent specials!!

9. SOLD subject to payment.

Posted on the Big Lefty Thread but I think this is the right place for it - whoops!

I'm selling a brand new Fender SKB LEFT HANDED bass case.

Fits all left handed Fender and Squire left handed P and Jazz basses

This came with my leftie American Standard P but I already have a suitable case so this one is surplus.

It comes with key and - if you want it - I'll throw in a Fender strap.

Brand new right handed ones are £129 at GAK - I have no idea if you can get a left handed one from Fender - never seen one though.

Only problem is a very slight split in the plastic at one of the corners - about 2cm. Makes it a 'second' although I paid full price - it was like this in the Fender cardboard box!

Have seen this before on Fender/SKB cases and has no effect on strength or security - dab of superglue would sort it.

Happy to email pics of case.

Looking for £85 - which is cheaper than most, branded, quality cases.

Sadly postage (cardboard boxed) will be £25 but I'm happy to deliver/meet within 30 miles of Brighton.

PM me for more info, pics etc.

(16/2/12 - revised price)

10.
Thanks, yes it's a hard call.
Soundwise the Bassix is excellent and pretty easy to play even with my limited Upright experience, but the look is not for everyone.
Alan at Bassix gave me a hollow composite body which I may try to adapt if nothing comes up.
I've got Alan's prototype Banjo Bass - weird beastie but great fun!!
Had a Dean Pace - converted to leftie - nasty toy to be honest - an upright bass guitar with a thick neck and dodgy electronics!

11. Cannot recommend highly enough. Certainly pricey compared to other Markbass 15s (maybe they will see sense and bring the price down a bit?) but (probably) worth it.

Tone is excellent, tighter mids and tops than the MB traveler 151 but still retains a nice bottom (sort of Kylie cab!). Definitely less muddy (IMHO) than the MB New York 151 - and lighter.

Tilt-back design is a mixed blessing - where do you put the head? - but it is quite stable on its side with small/medium sized head on top.

I use mine with a Club 121 (which is leagues ahead of the NY121 it replaced) and have finally found 'my' tone after working through other Markbass cabs, Ampeg, Epifani, warwick and Ashdown.

Not cheap, but one of the best that Markbass have created so far - be even better if they made a combo in the same style/range.

12. Owned:
Encore P (absolute dog - fell apart almost before it was out of the box)
Westfield P (upgraded the pups - should have kept it - damn fine bass)
Yamaha BB404 (quietest - and I don't mean that in a nice way - bass ever)
Fender P USA (three of them - will I never learn?)
Fender Jazz MIM (should have kept that one as well - upgraded everything)
Tanglewood 'Beatle's' bass (too light and tinny)
Musicman Stingray 4 (Finally realised I don't like maple fingerboards)
Musicman Sterling 4 (Nice, but not a 'Ray, and it took me two to find out)
Musicman Bongo HH 4 (Just couldn't find a sound that suited)
Ibanez Artcore (Another one I should have kept)
+ various other mistakes! (flipped Epi EBO, several bitzas, Crafter acoustic - I could go on!!)
Oh, and I almost forgot the Ric that was nicked!

Own:
Warmoth P/J - solid walnut, ebay MIJ neck of unknown origin, Wizard pickups (terrific workhorse)
Warmoth MM fretless - walnut body, bookmatched walnut top, birdseye maple and ebony neck, Wizard pickup (total indulgence)
Musicman Stingray 4 (the Daddy!!)
Musicman Bongo HH 4 (so different to my first Bongo - great tone and very playable - 'Sunday best' bass)

All lefties

13.
After realising I really don’t need 1000 variations of a P or J bass (1 of each is enough) Im now back to where I was years ago. Eg, I love my Fenders and the sound they make, but EBMM basses still just work for me. I find I can even play them better, especially fingerstyle, (more than likely the string spacing and EQ available).

Im bucking the trend I guess, but I think once you find a manufacturer that ticks all the boxes (eg consistent quality control, comfortable feel, great sound and aesthetically pleasing) then its sometimes best to stick with it.

Ive flirted with Lakland, Warwick, tried a few Sadowsky Metros, tried a Rickenbacker 4003, and yet I still go ‘this isnt right, for me’.

The Bongo. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Id want one. Odd design, silly amount of power on tap, and very modern.

Ive been listening to demo and researching online about the pickups, the build, the history and the pricing. It seems whilst they are expensive, for what you get, they are stunning.

Ive never been one to dare to step out of P/J/Ray shapes, but now its time I think to have at least one different bass! It seems to have held its head up for 7 or 8 years and its still popular, now even with a 6 string!

So what are your thoughts on the Bongo? Im interested in a Bongo 5 HH.

On the other side of the fence sits the EBMM Sterling 5 HS. But, that’s pretty close to my Stingray 5 HS I guess, except ceramic and with a slightly different body shape.
Had a Bongo 4 with dual pickups - couldn't get on with it - mainly due to the complexity of the four band EQ and an inability to get a 'Musicman' sound out of it (single pickup might have worked better but never played one). Lost an absolute fortune on it as no one else wanted it (even though minty mint) so traded it to a specialist bass shop for 50% of new price - ouch!!!! To answer another post - I think they use basswood (Lime tree) because it is easier to machine into 'exotic' shapes than alder and ash - small grain and good tone.

14.
Hi Guys,

I'm looking to move on a couple of basses, warwick jazzman 5 2006 and a musicman stingray 4 1996. Possible trades for amplification/ light weight cabs.
Could trade the Stingray against a virtually unused Markbass Classic 104 - sounds like an SVT but weighs way less - check out www.markbass.it for spec.

Retail new is about £850 and this one is as new.

Let me know - would need to agree where to swap over.

15. Epifani UL112.

Try a couple of those - IMHO beats Aguilar for tonal range (and lighter) and less bright than Markbass.

I owned a couple of (rare) Ampeg single 12s and tested Aguilar, EBS and Markbass at the Bass Gallery before trying out the Epifanis - Epiphany indeed - knocked the others out of the frame.

I use them (through a Markbass R500 or F1) with a Musicman Stingray with EB Slinkys and a Warmoth P/J with roundwounds - handles both beautifully.

16. Martin says nice things about you as well Mike!!

Current issue does seem to have more than the usual number of typos - perhaps Christmas got in the way?

Bass Gallery is London's hidden gem - forget Denmark St, just take the tube to Camden and sink into bass heaven.

Then, when you have recovered, talk to Alex about Epifani cabs - superb!!!!
