The only time I've used glass fibre resin, it turned out pink.

I'd try it on some scrap wood first to see what it looks like.

I'll learn the notes for a cover song, but play them with my own "feel". I've just learnt I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. The original bass part is fairly stacatto, but I play it with a bit more "flow" between the notes. As long as what you're doing suits the song, I don't think it matters if your own personality comes through.

If it's for a tribute band though, I think it'd have to be spot on to the original as much as possible.

I'm not too fond of the selector switch either. If I had one I'd ditch the switch and put another volume pot in. I have a BB614 and use the blend pot quite a bit, it's useful if you can vary between the pickups.

What's the difference between the model ranges?
The 2024 is twice the price of the 1024, which itself is twice the price of the 424.

As far as I can tell they all have similar specs for materials, so apart from the 2024 being handmade what's the real difference between them?

Thanks for the answers. I wasn't too sure about all the effects on the Roland as I'm basically a '70s thudder, but it might make me expand out a bit more soundwise. I've got a Roland/Boss micro BR recorder which is still going strong, so I'll go with the Roland when I get the tax refund through.

I've been looking at various practise combos and have shortlisted Apeg BA108, Ashdown After Eight, and Roland Bass Cube 8".

The Roland is quite a bit dearer than the other two, so what do you get for the extra money? Is it for all the various effects or is the build quality better as well? I don't mind paying extra for better quality, if that's the case.

Does anyone know if the newer 5 piece laminated BB necks would fit on a 6 year old BB 614 ok?

I'm toying with the idea of converting my current neck to fretless, and getting the new neck so I can change between them. I really like the look of the 5 piece neck anyway!

Yes I've had it on for a couple of weeks now. It has 4 fixing holes, not 5 like on the original but managed to fit it ok with some new holes. It's very well built, chunky and fairly heavy. Can't really compare the sound differences at the moment as I've only just started playing bass again and hadn't played it much with the old bridge on. I'll swap them over again soon and then see how they compare for sound.

It does look loads better than the old bridge, and it doesn't have the allen screws sticking up, so no edges to catch your skin on. The saddles have locking bolts, so intonation and action stay where you set them at. For 14 quid posted can't complain really.

I took the neck off my Yamaha BB614 last week, and was surprised at what a snug fit it was. By contrast the neck on my Fender Strat is a very sloppy fit, and where it sits into the body is very lumpy and not at all flat.

I have a Yamaha AES 620 les paul type guitar which is excellent quality, and I'd keep it over the Strat any day. I've done the usual guitarist thing of having Gibsons and Fenders in the past, but I'm a Yamaha man now. I do really fancy a Fender Jazz bass though!

Only bought it really beacause I think the Fender style bridge on my Yamaha BB is letting the rest of the guitar down a bit in the looks department!
Glad I ordered it before I discovered the Babicz bridges, I'd deffo would have had one of those even at 5 times the price!

My favourite Lancaster bassline is the one on Living On An Island. Dead simple and cliched, but it really works well.

I first started playing bass in 1979, and gave it up round about 1982/3. I bought another bass 3 or 4 years ago, but can't get back to the same standard I had when I was younger. I've only just started taking an interest in it again really, and am slowly improving.

I have a 1960s Futurama, which was my first bass from'79, and a Yamaha BB 614 from 3 or 4 years ago.
I used to have a Bass Collection 401 active which I won in a guitar magazine in the early '90s, but didn't keep it long as I was skint at the time! Wish I could have kept it, it really was a nice instrument.

Other basses I've had were a Fresher Precision copy which I PX'd for a 1966 Fender Telecaster, and a Tokai Precision which I swapped for a Vox valve amp.

Anyway, that's me, so hello everyone!
