1. Yep, that shows what i'm talking about really well. I'm wondering if Ashdown did it to make the labels on the controls easier to see in poor light, or whether someone just got too slack with the CNC machine πŸ˜„ I have tried just turning the head around in the case as there's loads of overhang space on the rear side, which isn't really needed. However the bolt holes aren't symmetrical on both sides so this isn't possible 🀨
2. Just took a look at yours. Is it just me but are the ABM 600 Evo IV heads put further forwards in the case, so that the sliders poke out more? I assumed the bolt holes in mine had been drilled too far forward, but yours looks similar too. Maybe the case is CNC'ed this way? My Evo iii was much further back in the head. I feel it makes the sliders more vulnerable to being bent in a collision. Thinking about making some kind of protective plate to cover it during transport, or getting a Roqsolid cover with the board in the front end for some protection
3. That's what I like about Ashdown, customer service is fantastic! πŸ‘Can't imagine many other amp makers doing that
4. All you guys with super quiet DI outs got me thinking on whether there may be other factors involved like a dirty power supply for my pedals or bad ground to my house. Went through all the possibilities to exclude stuff and worked out it was actually a noisy power supply to my headphone amp which I'm using to listen to the DI out. Take that out of the circuit and the head DI out is super quiet πŸ™‚
5. OK, I guess the hum on the DI is not an issue with everyone? I can only state my experience in that I've had about 3 MAG heads and 2 ABM heads and hum has been an issue with all of them when using the DI. On another note - I've just upgraded from an EVO III to an EVO IV ABM 600. Very pleased, I don't think its just my new buyers bias but it just sounds better. Even the pre-shape sound sounds more useable and less scooped. The 5k slider I'm also loving for a bit more clarity on the top end. One thing I haven't heard anyone mention is that the new gain and volume pots on the Evo IV are the clicky notched type, which are also on the RM heads. I like em, Just feel like better quality to me πŸ‘
6. Anyone found a fix for the noisy DI on the ABM head? I've had several MAG and ABM heads and all of them have had some degree of hum I've made myself an XLR patch lead where I've cut the ground along with any connections to the shell of the XLR socket and it still hums. I'm not sure why? Any ideas? When I need a DI to the front of house I usually don't use the head and use my own Radial DI before the amp and it is always dead quite (don't need to usually lift the ground lift on it either)
7. I'm an ABM 500 Evo III owner. Is it worth upgrading to the Evo 4? I appreciate its only 2 extra sliders on the EQ plus some more gain to the valve section. Is it worth it?
8. I have read a comment from Ashdown somewhere that one difference with the JJB500 over the other 12 band heads is that it has a higher input (maybe higher gain?). I wonder if that's a factor? I'm aware its a totally clean amp, but sometimes that exactly what you want for a pedal platform. The harmonic generator dial intrigues me - is it basically a presence control?
9. Thanks Andy. That's interesting, you're he 2nd person to say it didn't have enough push. Do you mean low end, gain, volume? I'm reluctant at the moment to switch to a class D such as the retroglide, prefer a good old solid transformer!
10. I'm interested in getting an Ashdown 12 band 600 and wanted some feedback on users experience of them. I tend to play mainly with a pic with roto rounds and like either a clean aggressive tone, a clean pedal platform for some modulation or a little bit of dirt which I get via a pedal. Would it be suitable for this? Will it work as a rock bass amp? I'm very familiar with Ashdown and have used much of their range of the years. I currently have an ABM 500 (evo iii) which i'm happy with but tend to use it with the treble and upper mids dimed permanently and often with a Boss EQ pedal in front of the amp also pushing the treble as other wise the amp sounds too warm and "woolly" for me. I also don't use the octaver, compressor or eq shape on the amp and now rarely use the valve pre as I prefer the OD of my pedal rig. I'm wondering if the amp will be too "hi fi". I want it clean but want to be able to push the lows and low mids too if I choose.
11. This is an all valve 30 Watt bass head with matching VS112 12" cab, both in very good condition. If you've never played one of these you'll be in for a shock. Don't be fooled by the 30 Watt power rating as this is all tube, not solid state (for a reasonable comparison i'm guessing you'd be looking at about 150 Watt solid state for equal volume, but it wouldn't sound as cool!). I can't turn this up to full volume in my house otherwise the neighbours will be round, its much louder than you think! This would be sufficient for small or medium gigs and goes even better with larger or more efficient cabs if you want louder. Also has a post power tube DI which means if you connect it up to the house rig or studio you get all the power tube valve sound (not just the pre-amp). In my opinion this also makes the perfect studio amp: great clean sounds as well as dirty grindy tones if you like that. You can also easily lift both head and cab one in each hand which is unheard of with most all valve bass gear. It also doesn't need biasing due to the design of the amp circuit, unlike most other valve heads. This is Ashdown's take on the Ampeg B15 (in my opinion) which is heard on so many well know recordings. I brought this from new and its been well looked after. Mainly been used for low volume practicing at home. Plenty more life left in the tubes (no microphonic, tone or volume loss) This along with the cab has been discontinued from Ashdown for a while now so grab yourself a bargain. Only selling as I need the cash for some more bass related gear. Comes from a pet and smoke free home. Be very sad to see this one go! Sale also includes Roqsolid heavy duty covers for both head and cab, the head cover also has a reinforced plastic sheet inside to protect the head's controls. Each cover is worth about Β£45 each. Also included is power (kettle) lead and speaker lead. Ashdown's description: The Little Bastard preamp stage employs ECC83 and ECC82 tubes and features High and Low gain inputs, front panel-mounted Effects Send and Return, rotary Bass, Middle and Treble controls with Mid Shift, Bass Shift and Bright switching, Mute switch, rotary Volume control and balanced DI output. The Little Bastard head partners perfectly with a range of Ashdown US Series cabinets. 18.
+1 You saved me from posting the same thing. I use mine to simply boost the signal into my Clone Theory before the amp. Works great!
Was thinking of getting this exact combination as well. Do you find boosting the signal with the LPB1 first does anything to reduce the noise/hiss from the clone theory? Also do you notice any tone change when using the LPB1? Thinking of either this or a MXR micro amp but the EHX is so much cheaper
