I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to replica basses, and have a serious aversion to headstock truss access on Fenders, it's just wrong in my opinion. When I've made replica basses I've always gone the extra mile to make them right, but that comes at a price of course. When I made my slab bass, I knew I wouldn't do it if I couldn't get a proper maple cap neck, which is why it didn't get started for 2 years, glad I waited though, and did it right. If they are being made for re-sale though, which mine wasn't, then cost and re-sale price plays a part, so I guess compromises need to be made. If I was to buy a replica bass though, it would have to be accurate, but that's just me.

For sure! You did a great job on that slab! Very nice work indeed! Have you ever managed to get your hands on an original?! It's quite an experience!! I have been much vexed by the neck. There is a big part of me that wants to do the heel truss rod! It would look much better. I will be going one with an Allparts neck as I do like them and a good lutheir friend of mine swears by them. However, as you mentioned it's all about cost!!!! I suppose if you are dealing in quantity, you can negotiate, 'some' discount! The owner of the original 66 slab wasn't bothered about the truss headstock, he seemed more concerned with, "that sound". I very much appreciate you input and comments.

  2. Does anyone have any views regarding head-stock truss rod access over heel access? Would heel access necks feel more authentic for the slabs?

Should run it through a Hiwatt, I know he has them. Transparency is a better showcase for a bass.
[/quote] Tried the HIWATT! Marshall just blew it away!!!

  5. Hi!

Thank you. I used the truss rod headstock adjustment because I thought it's just more practical. I decided to use high mass bridges, because I felt they were a an improvement on the original, but also an acceptable compromise. I added brass saddles and custom machined brass nut to help with sustain and harmonics. You must have been looking at the 'prototype' I put together which had the 21F neck. I now use 20F vintage tint maple capped. I really love these necks!! I've looked at loads, and these are superb quality with no skunk stripe. I can perfectly understand the 'purist' argument regarding authenticity. Having got hold of an original slab which actually belonged the the late great John Entwistle and really got down with it I could see other subtle differences. For example, the contour of the body was more rounded even though slabbed and was heavier than the swamp ash I used. I could find nothing different about the neck only mine was more playable. I must stress the point that I never intended to go out and build exact replicas of the slab. I guess you'd need to turn to FCS for that. What I wanted to do was pay homage to it with my mark on it. I wanted to build a great bass that someone could gig the arse off and really enjoy playing. I want them to be played and enjoyed!!

  6. Can I take this opportunity to apologise to Basschat community if I have offended anybody by my posts regarding 'toting' for prospective business. I understand that this is not the place for that. However, I would love the opportunity to open discussion regarding my basses whether good or bad. I have tried to pay homage to this wonderful and iconic bass guitar. Your views on this are critical! Once again, please accept this apology from a newbie.

Hey Slab66, if it is the bass in the link KiOgon posted, that is one fine bass. I`m sure there will be many on here looking at this one, so as much info as possible, and links to pics, am sure you`ll have a queue for this one.

    Welcome to the forum, btw.

Many thanks for your kind words. I just wanted to get some input on the build and nothing more.

    £0.99p seems like a fair price to me, £40.00 P & P seems expensive B)

Of course if its not the bass in the link, ignore me as well
