1. The Brighton gig was fantastic, they played lots of the legacy stuff, which I wasn't expecting but was pleased to hear! Sadly they didn't play everything I wished to hear, but for a band like that to play everything I wanted to hear, would probably take all night!

I did get to meet Corey Henry, Magda Giannikou, and the main man himself Michael League - I definitely fan boi-ed out and might have told him that he's my hero...

I'm off to see them tomorrow in Brighton. Usually shy away fro the front barrier at gigs due to my height. but you can be sure ill be impeding a few views tomorrow :)

Don't you dare! ;) I'm going and I'm a shade over 5 foot 7!

3. I had an all valve head in my Ashdown CTM 300, absolutely amazing amp, the tone was modern yet vintage, but the head alone was topping 35kg, and my 410 was topping 40kg. While I'm a young and relatively fit guy, I struggled to move my rig down my stairs, in to my car, out my car in to a venue, sometimes up steadily narrow stairs, and then repeat in reverse. Doing that once a week was a pain, let alone doing 3 or 4 times a week!

I've since realised/discovered that I can get near on the same tone from an amp that weighs 2 kg and a cab that weighs 20kg. And as a combined rig comes in at less than half the price of just my old CTM head.

Despite being set up by his suggested luthier, he believes the notes on both to be inconsistent, personally I cannot hear it and neither can the luthier. On the basis the tutor has got me through 4 bass grades without issue, I cannot be bothered to argue. He is also keen that I do not swap between basses.

Out of curiosity how long have you been playing for, and what exam are you due to take?

When I teach, I encourage all my students to use as many different basses as possible, different necks, tone, radiuses help to get you used to any bass and able to play any bass on a whim without over thinking it.

5. I'm a HUGE Snarky Puppy fan and love the feel and technicality of Michael Leagues lines, so finding this video yesterday has had me hooked on watching and listening trying to work out every little run and detail of what he plays! It's some absolute fantastic playing and showcases great musicality from the pair of them!

6. Having looked at a number of different luthiers and basses, I think I've narrowed it all down some more.

On the list to contact are; Marleaux, Maruszczyck, Overwater, and Fodera.

A single cut is definitely the style I'm after, or a Jazz shape, more like the Fodera Emperor.

Tone wise I want versatility, I'm doing a lot of different style gigs now where a P bass just isn't shining, I mean there's not too much wrong with the P, but I just don't feel it's the best choice for some of the gigs and stuff I do.

Cheers for the advice everyone!

I completely agree with BigRedX.

I'm crazy about Fodera. I've tried a few. One was crap (sh*t happens), but all the others made my basses feel like they were toys (and I own 2 modulus quantums, owned a JPBass and tried tons of high end basses). It was shocking for me, every single time. You may consider that it might have been altered by a psycho-acoustic syndrome, however... It's what I felt deep inside.

The best bass I've ever played was Dominique Di Piazza's old Fodera (buckeye top). That bass was a dream. Nothing less.

But... Even after trying tons of instruments... I haven't tested a single instrument that sounded exactly like Fodera. And when I say I've tried tons of instruments, I mean it... From industrial production models, small and worldwide known luthiers... It's just... Not the same thing.

The only instrument that I owned and that remotely sounded like a fodera was from a Korean brand.

Edit: However, there's a few guys who work well and are really inspired by Fodera. JCR is one of them. Haven't checked the price, though...

There was also an eastern european luthier who used to build fodera-like basses. I don't remember his name...

JCR looks really interesting, it's also not far from my grandparents house in Spain, might be worth a visit when I'm next out there...

Marleaux Consat Custom.

I've only played 1 Fodera, and it was lovely, but for me anyway it wasn't any better (not even a little) than my Marleaux.

I would go as far as saying that the difference in price points is purely down to mental rent that Fodera have to pay in New York.

They sound pretty nice, but the look is just not my cup of tea at all, the body shape looks, nasty to me!

Partly, although they are out in the wilds of Brooklyn, it's an industrial estate essentially.
They also have a lot of very talented staff (due to demand of the brand), as well as providing healthcare and other benefits that we probably think of as 'normal', that aren't normal in the USA :)

Anyway, if we're talking about the aesthetic and vibe of Fodera, I'd take a look at the Maruszczyk Sputnik (although I've never played one), ACG (although the necks are VERY different to Fodera), and Adamovic (which I've not tried either). The Adamovic and ACG don't do neck through (from what I can see), only bolt on or Set-neck. Not sure about Maruszczyk, email Adrian and find out. The heel on the through neck Foderas is a thing of beauty, and makes moving up to the top of the fingerboard just plain sailing! :)

Cheers, Si, some good suggestions there, more research will be done!

Or, if you want to save a lot of money, select the Yamaha that comes closest to your needs ...

This is certainly an option, especially for the time being, but the fit and finish of a top of the range bass is something I really quite fancy treating myself to!

9. I've found an ever increasing need for a versatile 5 string, currently I only seem to play my P which has flats on it, but there are times where I wish I had another option, with an extra string, and something more modern sounding.

I've ALWAYS wanted a Fodera since I first heard one, but have never had the money to buy one, so what are the alternatives to a Fodera, no more than £2.5K?

Cheers.

What music do you play?
What venues?
Do you have a loud drummer?
Do you take the bus to gigs?
What sound are you looking for?

Without this info, you'll only get a list of Mark Bass cabs and will still have no idea if what's being suggested is right for you.

Good luck

Yeah probably shouldn't have posted this thread in a rush earlier!

As for your questions, I play everything stylistically from your standard pub set, to funk, jazz, double bass, etc. etc.
I play any and all venues from the awkward pub to the established live venues.
I drive so never use public transport
I play with many drummers and some are exceptionally loud, others not so loud.
Sound wise I'm after articulate and even, I want my sound to be full and pronounced but subtle as well - hard ask I know aha!

Yep, saw one of these online whilst looking for the TTE500. Personally, I preferred the perforated plate look of the TTE500.

I have to concur! I'm saving for a TTE 500 and a new cab currently.

Hi guys, haven't been able to see from online pics but just wondering if these limelight basses have authentic looking checking in the relic finish? They look great from a distance!
Thanks

Check out MJT Guitars for authentic looking checking, know they are US based but, they look to be far and away the best in the biz currently!
