1. I have a few fretless basses and need to get a fretted 5 string. So this is for reluctant sale or trade.

It's in excellent condition, has a fantastic low action and loads of mwahh !!

It has an unlined ebony board.

Trades I'd like are a Status, Roscoe, MTD, 5 string jazz bass, Sei, Stingray 5, Bongo 5 - pretty much any decent 5 string. I can add cash if necessary.

The sale price is a very reasonable (I think) £1195 but I'm open to sensible offers.

It comes with a Warwick gigbag.

Personal collection only from Birmingham. Or I could meet halfway or something.

    Thanks

I use one in a couple of songs with one of my bands, this is my spare.

I've gone a bit mad with the bass buying just recently though :).

They're about £80 new, I'd like £50 which includes UK postage.

  5. Just having a sort out of accumulated accessories.

I have a pair of rack ears for an iAmp 800 and a Markbass LM2.

Both come with the necessary fixing screws.

    £10 per set including postage.

    Markbass sold !

  6. I got this a month or so ago with my Alembic bass. I prefer cases though and it's taking up a bit of room.

It's new....seriously, the guy bought it to ship the bass in !.

    It's like this http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...ec_Contego.html

It's a grey colour and really is very well made, probably the best gigbag that I've seen.

    I'd like £70 which includes postage, that's a £40 saving.

  7. Just a quick posting as an appreciation for the guy's talents as one of the countries top luthiers.

I bought a used but mint condition fretless bass a couple of weeks ago from a local music store. I changed the strings when I got it home and tried to adjust the truss rod, only to find the rod had seized and the adjuster had gotten stripped.

Anyway I took it to John on Monday this week. He's fitted a new rod and done a fantastic set up job on the bass. It's now playing great and I'm very happy. He didn't rip me off either, despite being incredibly busy he managed to fit me in.

I can't believe though that Warwick fit such cheap and nasty aluminium truss rods into such expensive instruments.

  8. In immaculate condition.

    GS 112

The portable GS 112 combines full lows, “growly”mids, and a smooth top end with an impressive amount of volume to make one of the most popular cabinets on the market. When the GS 112 was released it not only won awards and magazine product “shootouts” but it changed the way bass players think of 12” speakers. Fatter sounding than 10” speakers and quicker responding than 15” speakers, this cabinet has found a home in all styles of music.

    Specs

One 12" cast frame woofer, 56 oz. magnet

    Power handling: 300 watts

    Impedance: 8 ohms

Phenolic tweeter with integral phase plug

Custom crossover with variable tweeter control

One Neutrik Speakon and two 1/4" inputs

Frequency response: 42 Hz to 16 kHz

    Sensitivity: 95 DB 1W 1M

    Heavy-duty spring loaded handle

    Interlocking corners

    Dimensions: 14"H x 19"W x 18"D

    7-ply, void free Philippine mahogany

    Weight: 42 lbs.

I'd like £250 including postage please. Or you can collect it from me in the West Midlands.

  9.
That pretty much sums up what I was about to post. Elixirs do indeed sound very consistent across all six strings. I'm not sure on the "real" instrument bit though as I see the bass guitar as a real instrument regardless of how many strings.

As for the stereotyping, it can unfortunately happen. I have had people be surprised when I turn up with a Jazz as they didn't realise i played four string???

Ultimately, make the decision with your ears not your eyes.

    Cheers

What I mean by real instrument is, I don't know it's hard to explain..........it's more of a multifuntional instrument, as in a piano or a guitar, you can play bass lines, comp, solo etc.
I know that likes of Jaco could do this on a 4, a 6 just makes it easier for us mere mortals.

  10.
I played a 6 almost exclusively for a few years, 4 for a few (and still do), and a 5 (with a C) for a part of a year.

They are wonderful instruments but I'm with Jake, I just cannot get used to the sound of the C string. As soon as you jump onto that string on it's own the bottom drops out, and it often doesn't cut through (IME). However I enjoyed having the extra range and extra string for options. So the next bass I get will most definitely be a 5 and almost certainly strung with a low B.

In short I'd rather have more frets on the G to gain the range than an extra string so as to keep a better tone.

After saying that though, Janek Gwizdala plays with a high C on his bass; when he was playing with his band the bottom did not drop out at all and it sounded like a very natural extension of the instrument. Full and thick, or at least not so radically different from the G. I would hazard a guess to say that could be to do with the Fender TBP-1 preamp he has, which thickens up a bass tone wonderfully. Though I am not 100% confident he had it with him.

I think it's a question of experimentation with different string types on your particular instrument. I've tried loads of different makes, and I totally agree that with some the C just doesn't sound right.
Elixirs are good, as are all of the DR strings, the C string on these sounds like it belongs.

As to why I play a 6, there are several reasons -

It feels comfortable to me, I have long skinny fingers and a 4 just doesn't feel right.

I like having the ability to play nice chord voicings, and let notes ring while playing other notes, really nice when a guitarist is soloing.

It makes reading easier, less position changes.

I play a lot of jazz, and it certainly makes playing through complex chord charts easier, again less position changes.

I also think it's more of a 'real' instrument, like a piano or a guitar.

On the downside though, I only have 6 string basses, no 4 or 5's, there are gigs that I'd like to do that I don't/wouldn't get offered due to peoples misguided stereotyping I suppose.
