1. You're absolutely right - the bass is very special and I'm loathe to sell it. John @ GSG worked very hard to give the bass the sound options I had suggested would be what most bass players looked for - particularly as I wanted the bass to be passive! This prototype also has a unique function that neither the pre-production or the production models will have - a boost function. This works similar to a mid-scoop by boosting the lower and higher frequencies but leaving the mids untouched. However, due to the cost of this option GSG decided not to go ahead with it in the production models. This is not just a little bit of UK bass history, this is a bass that offers the working musician an array of sounds to fit all requirements, all packed up into one very playable but simple instrument. The soundfiles that I have were done in the studio and were sent to John @SG so that he could hear how the bass sounded 'live'. From what he told me, apart from deleting the boost function and turning the power down (these PUs are very powerful) he hasn't changed the tonal qualties at all. Mark at Bass Direct was very impressed with the sound when I took the instrument to him last here - so much so he wanted to order one of the production models but it seems the Bass Lounge in Manchester got in there first! I'm just sad I have to let it go.
2. Yeah, sorry! I was a bit quick with the 'Post' button!
3. Here's a bit of UK bass history - the original Gryphon prototype that John @ Gordon Smith Guitars and I developed. The body is one-piece pine and features contouring at the rear to ensure the bass sits comfortably against the body. The pickups are handwound and are designed to offer numerous sound options from Jazz to Preci and beyond (Soundfiles can be sent per E-Mail). The neck is a one-pice maple neck which from the dimensions resembles a typical 50's Precision Bass neck. Having said that, it is wonderfully playable and I have not had to adjust it at all! Paint finish on the body is not typical-GS however, John has previously offered to re-work the body and finish it. Despite the lightweight body and the one-piece neck, the bass is very well balanced and a pleasure to play. Unfortunately, I have to sell it (explanation can be given - but not here!) Secure shipping to any address in Europe. Price is negotiable however, please note that the pre-production models are being sold for 950GBP (1.100€) and the full production models will go for around 1300GBP (1.600€). Plese contact me at: "][email protected]
4. Bass is no longer available.
5. If there are humbucking mouths I'd buy one straight away! That way she couldn't keep reminding me of how much money I spend on bass equipment!
6. As I as recording the bass for Sheldon at Dingwall, my wife decided (unbeknown to me) to dry her hair in the next room. The buzzing is the electrical inteference from her hairdryer! When I finish in the studio today (using my Duesnberg today) I'll re-record the bass. My wife's going to the gym tonight!
