As my Dingwall isn't moving I'm offering up my Yamaha BB1200 for sale too.

This is the bass that was made famous by Chris Cross in Ultravox, the blokey out of Herbie Hancock's band, Hooky & some fella called McCartney. Yamaha's take on the P Bass but with a through neck & the pickup reversed. Alder wings, 5 piece maple/walnut neck, quality bridge & tension adjustable machine heads.

The bass is in superb condition for a 33 year old instrument, a few pin head sized impressions, one larger dink through the finish is pictured - that's the worst mark on the bass. At some point a bespoke scratchplate has been fitted, it's a very professional job, properly shaped & even has the cutout to access the truss rod. Frets are as new, truss rod turns in both directions & its got a brand new set of Chromes on it. Included is the original Yamaha case (well worn!) &, remarkably, the original booklet, cleaning cloth & tool kit are all intact.

If you've been looking for one of these you'll struggle to find a nicer one. It's a through neck Japanese made bass from Yamaha's golden period for less than £500, nothing to touch it at this sort of price. I have a suitable box & packing and am happy to ship at your expense.[/s]

So the seller shouldn't lose money for something out of his control but the buyer should? Seller's an arse &, regardless of his disclaimer, he is liable for safe delivery under EBay T&Cs.

Ok, you pick up a bass in front of a few friends, which song do you launch in to to really impress everyone?

I love the look & sound of Thumbs but I've always found them very uncomfortable to play. That stubby top horn means it it sits too far to the left on me & makes anything below a G a real stretch.

Bumping this back up. A magnificient bass for less than half the price of a new one.

What I love about 70s Fenders is that everyone, but everyone, has got hold of a good one. I never see anyone say they have a 70s Fender & it's a dog. Really odd since received wisdom is that the good ones were almost accidental on Fender's part. You just have to look in the for sale section to see "good" 70s Jazz basses with pickup routes that look like Ozzy Osbourne did them with a spoon.

So guys & gals, what would you consider to be the best P Bass offering money can buy these days? Only stipulations, it must look like a P, have a P pickup & not be a vintage Fender.

Lots of interest, no money type bump.

Yum! In that first picture it looks like the strings are touching the pickups, is it just the angle?

A couple of contentious entries here, not crap as such, just disappointing.

An Overwater Progress that was just dull, dull, dull. It was the magnolia paint of the bass guitar world.

Modern Stingrays. Hate the bland maple necks, find the tone anaemic & a pale facsimile of a once great bass.

I've been through the gamut of boutique basses but my Dingwall AB1 is head & shoulders above anything I've ever played. I can't recommend them enough, just wonderful, wonderful instruments.

can you get insurance from Interparcel? Last time I used them musical instruments were in the list of exclusions.

Sadly I have taken much better care of the Dingwall than I have my kidneys so I'd only get "spares or repair" prices for a kidney.

Possibly the saddest day of my bass playing life is upon me. For those that don't know, I quit my public sector job after 25 years to set up in business on my own & have been selling loads of gear off to help get my business moving. I've tried to keep hold of 1 Dingwall simply because I love these instruments so much but the money would allow me to bring in some hardware that will cut my operating costs.

I make no secret of how much I rate Sheldon Dingwall's work, there are 3 Dingwalls for sale at the moment on here & justice says they should have all been snapped up long before I added one to the list. Fanned frets may appear like a gimmick but 10 minutes with a Dingwall is all most people need to realise what a fantastic idea they are. Finally a bass where every string has the presence, punch & sustain of the G & where every string sounds like it's from the same instrument. Fretting is more comfortable & because a lot of the extra scale length is at the bridge end, the neck doesn't feel massively different to a normal 34 inch instrument. Having owned a lot of high end basses this is the only 1 where I found nothing I didn't love about it.

So, my bass then. It's an Afterburner 1 with a 5A flamed top over alder, maple neck with Wenge fingerboard, Hipshot Ultralite tuners, Hipshot bridge & a pair of Dingwall neodynium pick ups. The controls are very intuitive & completely passive. Vol, 4 position rotary pick up selector, tone & the EQube switch. The rotary p/u selector gives bridge, neck & bridge (series), neck & bridge (parallel) & neck. The Eqube is off in the down position & gives you a nice bright, modern tonality. Flick the switch up & you get a subtle treble cut with a smother mid-range. Difficult to explain but it's kinda like Mark King's slap tone v Larry Graham's, a bit rounder & less biting. The nice thing is that the switch sounds so natural that I had to check to find out which was the normal position. Oh, the tone pot is marvellous too, totally usable across the entire range, no woolly muffled nonsense.

The bass is pretty much mint, nothing to tell you that it isn't a new instrument. For weight I'll need to check the Dingwall owners card but it is sub-8lbs, let me say that again for the hard of reading, [b]sub-8lbs[/b]! Bass comes with the superb Dingwall gig bag, all the (colour coded) allen keys & the Dingwall owners card as mentioned.

I'm happy to pack well & ship this bass but the lack of a hard case means local collection would be better. If you must have it shipped it will need to be at your risk. Travelling to meet up is difficult for me at the moment due to my wife's ongoing chemo but I will try if needs be.

Anyway, a new AB1 with this spec is £2350 so how's about [b]£1199 £1099[/b]? Not interested in any trades or low-ball offers, if there's no interest I will be far from heartbroken because it'll cost me a lot more to replace it when I'm more financially secure. A plethora of top end guitars, all just £1200 but you must email them to conclude the "deal". I'm getting the words "hijacked account" for some reason.

Surprised this is still here to be honest. If anyone's wavering don't let the frets scare you, they are so much more intuitive and comfortable than regular frets. The core tone is superb & the electrics put paid to the notion that flexibility demands an active EQ. Oh & the build quality is as good as you'll ever find. If someone doesn't jump soon I fear I will - it'll make a great partner to my AB1.
