1. just like the old days, knocking ashdown!lol. All though not so many on here as there used to be,they must be doing something right at last!Ive never had a problem with them in the last 8 years ive used them and am still using one today. Not everyone will like ashdown same as not everyone likes ampeg, markbass etc.thats how it is and is a good thing as people still have lots of choice.

  2. email ashdown about the wattage etc, they are very helpful.I used ashdown 10's with 15's for years and always produced a nice sound.Bass players have been using the two together for several years, that was the thing to do.Its only recently that certain people say you should not put the two together,.why i dont really know, but it has worked for thousands of gigs!

  3. wish i could answer that as i had a guitard belting out black night in one ear and a bassist trying out and buying an abm head in the other!i dont think theres much difference in the mibass head to an abm head to be honest.i did prefer it with the bass boost on and the sliders do make a big difference unlike the rotary controls.i did crank it up and the sound kept clean.much better than ashdowns Lg heads.why is it though you cant crank up the input more than 9 o'clock on most ashdowns before it starts clipping?

  4. i tried the mibass head in pmt the other day.the 220 would not imo be loud enough for most gigs but the 550 definately had enough power.i tried it through an abm 1x15 cab and it sounded ok.so a mibass combo might be the answer whenever they are available as long as they are not overpriced!

  5. have used markbass before at a charity bash and was impressed, although that one wasnt light weight!maybe i could just screw some casters on the bottom of my combo, save a little carrying or compact cab with a lightweight head.will have to see whats about.

  6.
I tried the new Ashdown Spyder 550 amp today and was mightily impressed. It was designed to purposely sound different from the ABM range. It has more in common with cleaner digital amps. In fact, I compared to to the TC 450 head and honestly thought it sounded better.

I used my 79 Jazz, and the Spyder brought out the true sound of the instrument - super clean but not harsh highs. Punchy mids and lows. The TC sounded more 'processed' in comparison. Tons of headroom in the Spyder and really effective tone controls. It was easy to get a sound with the minimum of faffing about.

    Highly recommended.
thats good to hear, love my abm but will try one asap.good thing is ashdown offer so much choice for everyone.

  7. ive got an older abm 500 head and its superb imo.i use an abm 1x15 compact cab along with a 2x10 ashdown classic neo cab.and the two together sound very good indeed. The 1x15 compact can always be picked up secondhand at a good price and are much better than the bigger abm 1x15.you might struggle to find ashdowns classic range available secondhand but they have dropped in price on most online stores.

  8.
The one in my local is new, never touched, currently connected to an Ashdown ABM 48 (4x8) mini cab,
pretty neat little set actually! can't wait to try it out for the tone!

still hesitating though, MAG300 or ABM300?

    decision people? Help?

    haha,
The guys at the place a cool, maybe i can get the price down?
theres one on evil bay now!

  9.
I wouldn't for a moment suggest that someone should buy something solely because of where it's made. I said consumers should take an interest in where it's made. All else being equal then make a decision based on country of manufacture.

This isn't just about basses or amps but everything we buy. When I'm in the supermarket I buy British produce that's in season. I recently had to buy a baby bottle steriliser. There were 2 brands on the shelf. One Chinese made, one British made and they were exactly the same price. Consumers have enormous power and if they changed just 10% of their buying habits it would make a huge difference to our economy.

The argument about price is a whole other subject. If getting something for the lowest price is the sole criteria for buying it then we will usually lose out to the Chinese or eastern Europeans because we can't compete on labour costs, but people will always pay up for quality or perceived quality. Your example of MIJ Fenders is an interesting one because Japan is not a low wage economy, and yet they produce a high quality product at a lower price than the USA. How many people buy BMWs at a premium price when they are not better cars than Fords.

We manufacture a lot of stuff in this country, and the only way we keep doing it is by having a competitive edge whether it's quality or inovation or image. Clearly if a product is inferior or more expensive then people won't buy it. The car industry is a good example. Until the credit crunch hit we were one of the largest car producers in Europe yet our roads are full of BMWs, Renaults, Citroens and Volkwagons. The motor industry led Germany and France out of recession because Germans buy German cars and Frenchmen buy French cars yet we've got factories turning out perfectly good Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans, Vauxhalls and Jaguars that no one is buying.

To say it's all a lost cause and not bother to take an interest is a self fulfilling prophecy. There is a significant trickle of offshored manufacturing coming back to the UK and that will probably increase as wage inflation happens in China and eastern Europe. There is no law against being patriotic although European law prohibits taxpayer subsidies giving a competitive advantage to industry.
totally agree.well said!

  10.
Fancy that!

I walked into my local music and there it was! An ABM300 head!

    Only issue was about £600
    but pricey?
    What were these like new

a bit off topic but still, anyone know why the ABM300 was discontinued?

I would really like one of these, but is the extra £300 or so that worth it?
keep an eye out on evil bay, should get one loads cheaper, but of course secondhand.

  11. older abm gear was uk made,i have an 06 abm evo11 head which is uk made.i had a 07 abm 4x10 cab which was made in the prc,so inbetween then is when they shipped production to the prc.the mag range was shipped a bit earlier i believe.what ashdown call their classic range was all uk made but now some of it is made in the usa and shipped back here.think some of their new all valve heads are made here, all a bit confusing really!still ive used ashdown for 3 years without a problem, whether uk made or in the prc :).

Also GuitarGuitar in Newcastle were great, i was up there on holiday, made it clear I wasn't likley to buy and the still helped me as well asany of the others in the shop.
Cookes in Norwich is nice but over priced.

Is that place in the sleepy Norfolk villlage, Norfolk Guitar and Bass Centre 'cause i was thinking about hiking up there tommorow and if it is, I won't bother...
when were you last in pmt?i went in a month ago and they had shoved all the bass gear up one corner!Depends who you deal with in there imo.i asked one guy to get a specific cab in for me to try, after two months and four phone calls i gave up and bought one online much cheaper!Agree about cookes.Been going for years and years and has always been overpriced but they are still in buisness.
